Beloved Allston/Boston venue Great Scott was denied a lease renewal. People across the country have banded together to write to the venue's landlord offices. This template facilitates the process and may have increased the number of letters written.

The Table at Season to Taste was a small but beloved restaurant in Cambridge, MA. Unfortunately, they announced that they will be closing due to the pandemic and sent an email to their customers and subscribers. It was a small restaurant that only sat around 20 people but it was perfect for a fancy, delicious night out. This restaurant is just one of the many business casualties that this pandemic has produced. #NortheasternJOTPY

It is a sign left at the Reference Desk at the end of the last day of in-person Reference service. There were still 175 students who remained on campus, as well as a few faculty. On March 18th all library service moved online, and the physical space of the library was closed.

Today is April 23rd 2020
My name is Dylan and I live in the small New England town of Marblehead, just 15 miles north of Boston. Marblehead is one of those small boutique towns that pride themselves on its rich history and position right on the ocean. However, due to COVID-19, Marblehead has effectively become barren and small businesses along our main road are closed until the foreseeable future. This road is usually busy and crowded with traffic, runners, dog walkers, street side parkers, and tourists. This has been the state of the town for weeks now and has been the cause of some small-town discussions online.
The closing of businesses in town will be hard felt compared to many other towns and cities because Marblehead is against the establishment of chain stores (besides Dunks and Starbucks of course) and relies heavily on local businesses created by local Marbleheaders. This pandemic will be the cause of many financial issues in our town and as the U.S. remains closed, our town’s income from lobstering and tourism will likely be very limited. The town has also passed rules for those willing to shop, that we must wear face coverings to get our shopping done. And for walkers, walking around town has also been hampered by the closing of certain public locations, parks, and access to walkways connecting different parts of town. As for myself, I prefer to stay indoors for the time being due to our rather poor weather lately.

On April 3rd, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston joined museums around the country when it announced it would furlough between 325 and 340 of its 750 employees as part of the MFA's strategy to mitigate financial losses caused by the coronavirus. In a guerilla art installation, Boston artist Peter Agoos placed a surgical mask over Antonio López García’s sculpture “Day,” which stands outside the museum.

During the pandemic, Mikayla Hopkins was studying abroad at the Suffolk University's Madrid Campus. Once the campus decided to close, she chose to stay in Madrid with a host family until the semester ended. Here she can be seen with her host mom and sister, doing Zumba by watching a YouTube video. Every day at 7 PM Mikayla, her host family and some of her host mom's friends via Zoom would video call one another and do Zumba together as a form of exercise since we can't go outside. We have been doing it every day for a month and a half.

Confined to their homes, residents of Greater Boston have been seeking solace in their own space by gardening more than ever. The town of Brookline began to pick up yard waste weeks earlier than it usually does as a result of popular demand, garden centers across the city are now delivering supplies and plants to customers, and at Mahoney's a popular garden center in the Boston subrub of Winchester, the line to pick up supplies was hundreds of feet long. Yet the space still felt empty, as pickups were carefully scheduled and masked customers observed physical distancing.

[Giana worked as a volunteer in Haven for Hunger food pantry]“By exposing myself to people who were affected the most by the spread of COVID-19 I was able to recognize my privilege in a pandemic that affects everyone. This has made me immensely more aware of the resources I have access to day-to-day. Similarly to what is said by Dylan Santos on page 169 of Harkins, “it is one thing to theoretically learn about the struggles that others face; it’s another to hear from the people who are struggling and see what that looks like for each individual person”. With both of my service-learning experiences, I was able to interact with the people who are discarded, and especially in regard to COVID-19, so many of these people are viewed as a number or a statistic. Through this experience, I was able to humanize and finally see who was being affected the most. I have already signed up for future volunteer opportunities and I fully intend to continue expanding what I already know.”
