In addition to COVID-19, 2020 was an historic year for civil rights movements like the fishing rights for the Mi'kmaq people. To get a full understanding of the Plague year, it is important to recognize other events that effect the pandemic's historical context. This artifact is a powerful photo from a Toronto protest, with protesters wearing masks and holding Indigenous drums, playing music. While this photo is evocative because the protesters are wearing masks, it is especially evocative because it illustrates the role of music both as a significant aspect of indigenous cultures and as a tool for peaceful activism.
