This image is but one of many that I have stumbled across walking throughout my neighborhood, each one with inspirational messages about how we will get through this.

This is a picture of a popular outdoor community gathering space in front of Weaver St. Market, a local co-op grocery, in Carrboro, NC. On any other beautiful Saturday morning, the tables pictured here would be crowded with people -- visiting, eating, drinking, working. Children would be running around, people would be walking by on the way to the nearby farmers' market. This is one of the busiest central gathering spots in Carrboro -- a small village adjoining Chapel Hill, NC, the home of the University of North Carolina. To see it vacant on what was a gorgeous, warm, spring Saturday is a breathtaking reminder of what coronavirus and its associated stay-at-home orders are doing to our beloved town and our lives together.

This image is part of a series exploring the role of language, typography, and presentation in informing the larger public. The rainbow sign is part of a movement in my community (and many others on LI) to engage children as they go on walks with their family. Businesses and families alike have drawn rainbows and put them in their windows so that kids who are out playing can count how many rainbows they find while on a walk/bike ride and try to find new rainbows the next day!

Chalk messages on a green way path. For miles this greenway path to park and nature area had sporadic messages through out with motivational and comforting sayings. I had noticed children going out to the path and leaving these messages for all to see. It was nice to read these things and know that while practicing safe social distancing not engaging in close conversation with other while on walks that others can communicate their feelings and connecting with others using only a few words.

Thank you for your unwavering support of our FREE Grab-and-Go Meals Program during school closures. So far, we have served more than 50,000 student meals across all locations to children 18 and under in our communities. We thank all our amazing nutrition services employees and volunteers for feeding those children/teens in our community!
Due to health and safety guidelines recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Tempe Elementary School District leadership, we would like to share this important update regarding changes in the distribution of meals and changes in time to our grab-and-go schedule.
Beginning Monday, April 6, we will no longer be serving meals at Thew and Wood. Our five remaining feeding locations will still be serving meals between the hours of 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. only. You will be able to pick up both breakfast and lunch during this time.

We are going for a walk every day for exercise, noting as the days go by new signs and information about social distancing. These signs were not there yesterday, and the teenagers playing basketball at the hoop and the kids playing on the playground have now disappeared. Just groups of two, or families with a few more, walking slightly furtively past one another. And many more bicyclists whizzing past on the shared paths — have already seen a bingle or two.

This image shows uplifting messages written by children and adults in my hometown. It captures the feeling of my PA suburb currently; because kids are out of schools, most parents are working from home, and all social gatherings are cancelled, many families are spending time together outside. Some written messages we saw include "Keep going everything will come to you at the perfect time!" "Have an online Netflix party!" "Wash your hands!" and "We will get through this together!"

Free lunch contains a turkey sandwich with cheese on a white bread roll, cucumbers, red grapes, fat free milk, carrots, ranch dressing, mayo, and simply Chex strawberry yogurt. The food isn't the most nutritious, but it helps out students who may face food scarcity, and it returns some normalcy for youth accustomed to eating these meals every week day.

My son's school closed on Monday. He is a high energy kid and copes better when he knows what the day holds. So I devised a schedule for us where he can continue to learn whilst school is closed.
We are finding that having a schedule is really helping with our daily life. It is meant to be flexible and serves more of a touchstone for when things get difficult throughout the day.
Many people are saying that time in isolation is a great opportunity to learn an instrument or language, master a hobby or really relax - but those of us with children don't have that luxury.

This photo was taken of the author's six-year-old son after he was left alone with a "geology kit" while the author participated in a conference call for work. The child had been sent home from school that morning because he complained of a headache and phlegm in his throat. Since he was not actually ill, the author endeavored to find interesting activities for him to do throughout the day while she worked from home. Three days later, the child's school, a private Montessori School serving students 18 months - 14 years, notified all parents that it would be closed indefinitely. The universities where the author and her spouse worked also announced closures (at least regarding in-person student services) beginning Monday, March 16. The author and her husband are now attempting to balance "Montessori-at-home" for their 3 and 6-year-olds with "working-from-home" until the crisis is over. As of this writing, the author believes this could be anywhere from one month to six months. Even as this presents challenges, the author is thankful for the security of hers and her husband's salaried university jobs and their capacity for sharing childcare responsibilities, knowing how much harder a similar situation would be for a wage-worker or a person relying on tips.
