‘Minnesota Nice’ has found a way to interact with neighborhood dogs while maintaining social distance. Chalk drawings and words of encouragement have become a common occurrence. first warm day in St. Paul since the shelter in place One of the lesser talked about results of social distancing has been the drop of interaction of neighbors with local four-legged friends. Although people are unable to say in person what good dogs they are, their owners are sure to relay the message. #DePaulHST391

Taken on a walk through Logan Square, Chicago
During this pandemic, it is not hard to notice the flaws that have been exposed in capitalist society. COVID-19 has shown what the effects massive layoffs and a surge of unemployment has on the economic infrastructure. There is a weak, built foundation behind capitalism—the framework is insufficient in providing for a large portion of the American public. As many of us are ‘sheltered in place’, unemployed, and struggling to pay rent, another worry places pressure on the public—the failure of the economy, and another Depression era. Anxieties are high, and the reasoning is valid. #DePaulHST391

A 75-degree Tuesday, Many people were out an about in Logan Square, Chicago
Walking down the street, it is more likely than not for one to stumble into a message like this. While many of these messages serve as a way to limit anxieties—bringing Chicago together in this ‘shelter in place’ initiative—this message differs. I cannot say that this is meant to bring people together. Yet, in a way, it is relatable. These last few weeks have produced a range of emotions in everyone—and while it is important to produce uplift for pedestrians emerging from their homes, it is also important to recognize that messages like “the end is nigh” is equally representative of the emotions that are present right now. #DePaulHST391

It has been a common occurrence to see messages in windows, streets, and porches in the neighborhoods of Chicago. Social distancing has instilled barriers into people’s lives and these messages are a sign from others that they are with you, while we all experience the effects of COVID-19. Some of these messages are uplifting while others can be relatively nihilistic. Either way it can be seen as an expression of the anxieties that stem from this plague—there are plenty of unknowns, but messages like “this will pass” is a nice reminder that community is still present in these trying times.#DePaulHST391

As a college student, my academic career continues even this epidemic hits hard. During the first two week of transitioning to the remote learning, I felt lost and everything was out of control. I had to set up a schedule by myself to keep up with all the deadlines and make sure not missing any lecture that could be on the test. It was a complete novel experience for me, because I was so used to running between classes and let the schedule catch me instead of following the fixed schedule. Luckily, all my professors were supportive and are patient in guiding us through all the modules and send out reminders about the deadlines.

This photograph was taken of a Libertyville, IL, public library, which is closed due to the pandemic. Across America, non-essential services such as libraries have had to shut down. The nature of the sign reflects the uncertainty of this quarantine period. By simply reading "The Library is Closed Today," this sign says little about how long it will be closed, instead directing patrons to the library website where information can be updated as circumstances change and new information is made available. #DePaulHST391

With music festivals being canceled and venues closed during the coronavirus outbreak, fans are yearning for some live music while they self-quarantine. Thankfully, many artists are turning to the internet to continue to reach their fans. KEXP is collecting a calendar of upcoming live streaming video concerts. We encourage viewers to utilize any digital tip jars or links to purchase music and merchandise, as many of these performers are losing income by not being able to tour. Please note: times and dates are subject to change.

This image is one that has been shared by a bar in the Chicago suburbs, showing thanks to people for supporting small business. I find it interesting because the business does not know that the reader of this sign has in fact supported small, local businesses. Instead, it reads like when your mom says “thanks for unloading the dishwasher” as a way of asking you to unload the dishwasher. #DePaulHST391

The COVID-19 virus disrupts life, particularly our relationships with those we love. But, relationships are flexible and adapt to circumstance. My mom is the Executive Director of a non-profit organization in Nutley, New Jersey. Her organization provides affordable food and psychological services to the greater community, making her an essential worker. Her role requires her to sacrifice a lot of her time at home. So, she can no longer see my brothers and I in the morning to keep us on track. Instead, she leaves notes for us, using notebooks and paper towels. This note is a "to-do" list for the day with some encouragement written in parentheses.

About a week ago, my folks and I had to make a mad dash to my college resident hall to salvage all of the stuff in my room. My dad made extra sure to let me know how it important it was that we got the toilet paper from my room. The whole experience was really bizarre. For starters, there was actually parking spots in the parking lot, something the school is usually pretty lacking in. In addition, the place was practically dead. There were some other students coming to get their belongings as well, but it was pretty much just me and my dad walking up and down the hallway. Considering it was my first year at college, it was a little depressing moving out so unceremoniously. Everything had to be quick and orderly. No time for goodbyes or anything like that. I almost feel like I'm missing out on the college experience a bit.
