Text (Omeka Classic)

Today's date is May 5th 2020, it is 7:49 in the morning. My name is Matthew Naylor and I am 21. The story I would like to share is about my grandfather and the ways Covid-19 has affected him. My grandfather is eighty-four years old and has been married to my grandmother for at least over 40 years, can't remember the exact number. My grandmother has alzheimers and has been in an assisted living center for almost two years now. She was just recently placed on hospice care due to her now inability to walk, and increasing mental deterioration. Before Covid-19 my grandfather would visit her everyday and spend four to six hour with her. He would then come home and do her laundry and shop for her, which the assisted living center could do. His whole world revolved around his wife and he did everything for her. I don't dare to guess about how he is feeling right now, but I can tell you that he has been unable to see her for two months now and has only been able to speak to her on the phone. I can tell he misses her, which is no surprise, and that he is extremely bored since he has been cooped up in the house doing the same routine for two months now. My only hope is that my grandfather can see my grandmother again and that she doesn’t pass away during the lockdown, but I don’t think I am alone in this feeling. As this pandemic is all about the older generation, and while many believe that the older and younger generation are at odds with each other I believe that through the lockdown and the stay at home orders we have shown that we have empathy and compassion towards our elders and that the idea of respecting our elders is still alive and well in our society.
