Kathy Weisse, BSN, RN is an orthopedic nurse at Lahey Hospital and Medical Center in Burlington, MA. She is currently working during the COVID-19 pandemic and has experienced working during a health crisis first-hand. I am lucky and honored to not only call her a hero but a personal hero as well; Kathy is my mother. Each time she comes home from work, she will tell me what happened in her day. Due to HIPPA laws, she does not tell me specific information about patients or anything. Rather, she tells me general information about changes in protocol at work, her feelings about being deployed to the hospital side, and more. Her feelings and experiences are shared amongst the majority of colleagues at Lahey Hospital and Medical Center. For almost a century, the hospital has played a large role in the local community. From fundraisers to local residents working at the facility, Lahey has been involved and integrated into community life in Burlington. Thus, the employees and their stories are the epicenters of the community’s gratitude. For example, on May 4th, 2020, the Boston Bruins singer for the “National Anthem” sang at Lahey along with a fleet of first responders: police, EMS, firefighters, and more. Moments like these are the reason why the community in Burlington cares about the employees and what they are going through during the pandemic. Kathy’s reflection on daily-operational protocols and her experiences are one of the many employees at Lahey Hospital and Medical Center.
