  Vancouver Island's Food Service Industry

  In this podcast, Philip Wolf discusses how COVID-19 has impacted the food service industry with restaurant owners Oura and Kymon Giakoumakis. Their restaurant resides at a golf course, so during the winter they saw a drop in patronage and are hoping to start patio service soon so business can pick up again. They did adapt to take-out service and a "parking lot patio" in order to provide service in safe ways, but they still struggled with the requirements and monetary challenges that the pandemic has caused. In this podcast they also discuss other local restaurants, layoffs, and closures, giving a clear view of how Vancouver Island, and specifically the district of Saanich, has adapted during this time.

  Ashley Trayler Oral History, 2020/11/18

  The interview is with Ashley Trayler, a senior undergraduate student majoring in Criminal Justice and Psychology. Ashley is not only a student but a mother of a two-year-old named Adrian. In the interview, Ashley discusses her life before the pandemic, which involved taking care of her son and working full time at a call center. Once the pandemic hit, Ashley was impacted by job loss, facing financial obstacles, and being a college student transitioning to virtual school. Ashley has made many sacrifices to adapt to obstacles that have come her way caused by COVID-19, but she has remained strong by taking herself and prioritizing her health to be the best mother, student, and person she can be.

  Brazillin JiuJitsu Classes During the Pandemic

  At the start of the pandemic many gyms had to close all around the world. As the pandemic has continued, gyms have reopened and had to change the way they do things. In this tweet we can see that during the Brazilian JIuJitsu class, that all of the attendees are wearing masks. This is one adaptation that had to be made for them to continue training as safe as they possibly could.

  How top MMA gyms are fighting -- and sometimes losing -- the battle against the coronavirus

  This article shows the difficulties and last minute changes that professional MMA fighters are facing during this pandemic. I remember seeing the cancellations mentioned in the article as well as others. In MMA there is always a feeling of never being sure if a fight will go through until the weigh-ins are done because of the possibility of injury. The pandemic and the virus have added another possible cause of cancelation for fights. One that the fighter may have no control over.

  Rizin 24 Behind the Scenes Photos

  Watching this event I found it interesting to see all of the masks that were being worn by staff and around the ring contrasting with the fighter not wearing one. I was also surprised that there were so many people in the crowd. This tweet and the photos it includes show that even in Japan, masks are strictly being worn in some capacity. ASU, HST485

  One bizarre mask and heads touching! It got heated during the UFC Vegas face offs | Woodley v Burns

  This video shows the changes to face off procedures in the UFC because of the pandemic. I have enjoyed seeing the way that some fighters used their masks as an extension of their personality in these weird times. I find it kind of interesting how the fighters wear masks for the face offs only to completely disregard them and any kind of social distancing on fight night. ASU, HST485

  Teaching in a Pandemic

  My mom has always been an elementary teacher and is finally nearing retirement. The pandemic has been a great challenge for her to adapt to. Her school year started with online instruction before moving to in-person learning later on. As a lifelong teacher, the adjustment to online teaching has been incredibly different and difficult for her. Especially considering the lack of support from the school and the district. The setup in the picture was jury-rigged together using materials that were already owned in order to try and provide the best learning experience for the students. Arizona State University HST485

  Altered 9/11 tributes underway as U.S. grapples with coronavirus pandemic

  The anniversary of 9/11 is a complicated occasion in a maelstrom of a year, as the US grapples with a health crisis, searches its soul over racial injustice, and prepares to choose a leader to chart a path forward. While many communities have canceled the 9/11 memorial events, many carried on with modifications. It's important to take a minute and remember the events that happened nineteen years ago. It's a time of reflection and remembrance at a time when nothing seems to be going right, we can be thankful for what we do have; starting with our lives. This year looks far different than previous years; commemoration ceremonies are filled with people wearing masks and standing six feet away from each other, but there is one aspect that has not changed, and that's the message of hope. We are reminded that we are one nation, though the good and bad, regardless of politics, social status, and race. We are Americans, we are strong, and we will persevere.
