Laughing with my Family from Over Six Feet Apart
On a Sunday this past July, my cousin texted me out of the blue saying that she was about to start driving from her home in Oakland, CA to Los Angeles and that she would love to stop in Santa Barbara, CA to have lunch with me. I was really excited to get her text, because I had been feeling extremely lonely that weekend. I hadn't seen any family members in-person since March, since I don't live very near any of them. My cousin had been following social distancing guidelines extremely carefully since March, and I had also been following them while allowing myself a little more freedom. Given that, we didn't even consider having a not socially distant lunch. I picked up food from a restaurant for us and set chairs far apart for us to eat in my front yard. When my cousin arrived, she even volunteered to go the bathroom in yard so that she didn't have to enter my house. I thought that was a little over-the-top, and we ultimately decided it was okay for her to come in wearing a mask to use my bathroom. We had a great lunch, just eating and laughing. It was so uplifting to be in the same vicinity as a loved one. Then my sister FaceTimed us from her home in Chicago with her baby. This is where things got pretty hilarious. We tried to set up my computer in a way that allowed my cousin and me to both see and be seen while also staying more than six feet apart. It was nearly impossible, but our attempts made us laugh so hard. It just felt like such silly thing to be doing. I had such a great time with my cousin for those couple of hours. Her presence and all of the laughter definitely lightened my mood. -

Going in Blind
Throughout this pandemic, one of the hardest hit groups of people in terms of how much the community wide lock down halted life for the time being, were high school seniors. This picture was taken as a replacement for what prom photos would have been in May. While this might come off as a shallow thing to place importance on, these prom photos we took mean more than just trying to reclaim the high school experience. Of the girls in this photo, four of us are now college freshmen. In our last few weeks together we took every opportunity to get together for lunches, dinner, or drive in movies, things that we took for granted pre-covid. As a result, the pandemic has ingrained in me a very important principle to have: live as presently as you can. I can honestly say that my best friends and I are closer than we ever could have been had our high school experiences not been put on pause for six months. I appreciate their company more, and I believe wholeheartedly that our experiences apart, and subsequently together, have strengthened our bond for good. -

California Could Cut Its Prison Population by 50,000 People
A news article discussing the potential release of thousands of prisoners to help relieve overcrowding during the COVID-19 pandemic. Large amounts of prisoners have been released in the past with no detriment to public safety. In a time when people are dying as a result of this overcrowding during a pandemic it would be incredibly beneficial to release these people. According to data, the issue seems to be one of political risk rather than of public safety. -

Moving in with COVID-19
Moving during COVID-19 made my transition unnecessarily more difficult. I am a 22 year old female who just had made a life changing decision to move in with my boyfriend and his family the beginning of March. During that month I was stressing out about college course, settling into a new environment, and trying to work out financial struggles. My stress level peaked within the second week of moving in to the point that I had physically gotten sick. I do want to make it clear that I was not sick with COVID-19, thankfully. All that worrying made my immune system drop and I ended up catching a case of strep throat. This had stopped me from continuing to work at my retail job two weeks before quarantine was enforced. In April I applied for unemployment but was not able to receive any benefits. This left me worrying about how I would financially pull my weight. My boyfriend works doing industrial flooring which allows him to be financially stable enough to support the both of us and our two Yorkie's. In May my boyfriend was working on a big project and had offered me a job for a couple weeks. So for those two weeks I got to learn about epoxy flooring and how long and tedious of a process it is. That experience made me appreciate my boyfriend and all the work that goes into making a floor. The next couple of months consisted of DIY projects, movies, and my summer college courses. Recently, my work has reopened allowing me to have some source of income, even if it's just working once out of the week. Starting a new stage in my life during this pandemic made it financially difficult but at the same time allowed me to learn how to enjoy the little things in life as well. -

Mask Requirements
Science is usually something that I felt comfortable understanding at face value, in certain situations. Epidemiology, virology, and the like are areas where I would like the smartest person in the room to have the loudest microphone. It seems that this is not always the case in politics, especially with science that is less than flattering. This item was added TAGS v6.1.9.1. I originally searched under the hashtag #florida. Within that search, I have chosen to add the following tweet because it shows the disjointed response between the federal and state governments, not to mention local municipalities, over the pandemic. California Releases Prisoners over Coronavirus Concerns
California is traditionally understood to be a fairly liberal state, but there is an exceptionally vocal conservative minority that exists in the state. Since the coronavirus began, there has been a similar culture war around many of the issues that are reflected in other parts of the country; in many instances, people blame the governor directly for everything that is going wrong. This item was added TAGS v6.1.9.1. I originally searched under the hashtag #california. Within that search, I have chosen to add the following tweet because it highlights a popular conservative voice in the state that is sharing their opinions on best responses to the virus. -

Questions on California Coronavirus Standards
When the coronavirus first hit California, there was immediate public discussion about what should be done about one of the potentially most at-risk populations: prisoners. Although there was an initial outpouring of sympathy around less-minor releases, the cries of law and order quickly went out, accompanied by the calls that civilization was about to end. How we keep these, and other at risk populations, safe is still a question that is up in the air. This item was added TAGS v6.1.9.1. I originally searched under the hashtag #california. Within that search, I have chosen to add the following tweet because it branches off on one of the arguments against wearing masks: their efficacy. -

California's Failures at Testing
California, as one of the biggest states in the country, was always going to have a challenge in managing the coronavirus. After the initial horror stories that came out of New York sounded like they were from an apocalypse novel, I was hopeful that California would rise to the challenge and try to mitigate the issues. As one of the earliest states to impose quarantine orders, things seemed to be going well. Turns out, that necessarily wasn't the case when it came to testing. This item was added TAGS v6.1.9.1. I originally searched under the hashtag #california. Within that search, I have chosen to add the following tweet because it highlights the reporting that is happening around the failures that have happened in the past concerning the virus, and how we can improve things moving forward. link to article mentioned in tweet: (https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2020-07-12/california-fail-coronavirus-testing-covid-start) -

This week they discuss guards still not wearing masks but inmates are required to, retweeted about #dreamers and #carenotcages, the public beginning to recognize the humanity inside of prisons, empowerment, #clemancynow, the state of California disallowing inmate grievances to be filed, stagnation of the movement to release inmates early to slow the spread, and the fight for their rights. -

New York vs. California on Coronavirus
New York was one of the original epicenters of the coronavirus back in the beginning of the Spring. As they have managed to get their cases under control, a similarly large state in California has had an explosion in cases. There have been a variety of discussions about how this happened, as people have debated testing, masks, and the idea of herd immunity. This item was added TAGS v6.1.9.1. Church Orders in California to Slow Coronavirus
California is currently experiencing a surge in cases, and the state government has taken certain precautions to provide a safe environment as it tries to open up. This has been specifically targeted at areas where people are gathering in large groups and where social distancing can prove somewhat difficult. Both users seem to be questioning the targeting of churches while people are able to still gather to protest. This item was added TAGS v6.1.9.1. I originally searched under the hashtag #california. California Reinstates Stay at Home Order
Here in California, the coronavirus has been hitting our state particularly hard. Although things were initially looking up after our efforts as one of the earlier states to impose quarantine. As we began our reopening, there has been an explosion of new cases. Specifically in Orange County, resistance to wearing masks and a rush to return to normal means that just a few weeks after progress, we seem to be back to square one. This item was added TAGS v6.1.9.1. I originally searched under the hashtag #california. Within that search, I have chosen to add the following tweet because it is from a local news source/local reporter that multiple people rely on. Californians must wear face masks in public under coronavirus order issued by Newsom
It is now required to wear masks in California. I finally broke down and bought a sewing machine to make masks for my family. Most masks are fairly cheap right now. Going for about $5-$10 each for a homemade one and about $20 for nicer manufactured ones. I was able to buy enough supplies to make masks for everyone I know for the price I would have spend to purchase me and my family enough to wear and wash for the week. I watched a tutorial on how to make the masks and by last night I am now able to bake a mask in under ten minutes. I am bummed about the mask mandate but it does not affect me much as I was already wearing them. Masks are making life difficult for people like me who are Hard of Hearing. I worry what next year will look like when the schools open and I go back to teaching. -

Orange County doesn't like Masks
Throughout the country, people have been looking for ways big and small to help fight the coronavirus. One of the simplest ways of helping has been wearing a mask. In Orange County, the populace has reacted aggressively against any mandate to wear a mask. Although various gyms, restaurants, and bars are reopening and suggesting that people wear masks and social distance, most of the time people are willfully ignoring the orders. This item was added TAGS v6.1.9.1. I originally searched under the hashtag #orangecounty.
