Love and Loss
This is a symbolic collage that includes newspaper headlines during the pandemic. It is representative of the ups and downs of the past year. It is important to remember that it can always be worse. -

The COVID Pandemic From The Perspective of a Random 8th Grader
I chose to make a computer because computers have been a huge part of lots of people's lives during the pandemic. Computers have been one of the only methods of communication for some people, and a lot of students are using them for school. I know that it may not be the most creative thing I could've made out of clay, but I think it represents a big chunk of the pandemic. -

Staying Connected As A Commuting Student
Staying connected as a commuting student has been hard this semester. St. Mary’s University usually holds events quite often for commuters throughout the year but due to covid these events have been put on hold. Recently, St. Mary’s Campus Activities sent out an email on how students can still stay connected in times like this. They have created a Commuting Rattlers GroupMe we can join. This lets us stay linked in with other commuting students and still have a way to interact with each other. We can join the Commuting Rattler Council through our Rattler Tracks. Here we can discuss our Commuting life at St. Mary’s. I feel like these are all great ideas to stay connected. It makes you feel like you are still socializing and being engaged with your community with a whole new twist to it. St. Mary’s also hosts events (Commuter specific and regular events) and are a great chance to stay connected to every aspect the campus has to offer. -

Grandpa & Gracie
I’ve missed my Grandpa terribly, but we’ve able to bond during the pandemic through a continuous email exchange concerning my dog. I’ll send him photos, and he’ll help me conspire ways to keep her safe from falling in our pool. We’ve been able to connect through our shared love of Gracie, even though we haven’t seen him or my Grandma for months. It’s been one of the most fulfilling experiences I’ve had in this plague year, especially because Grandpa is mostly deaf and can’t communicate well in person. It’s interesting how technology (and Gracie!) have facilitated connection between us. For a nonagenarian, he’s probably more proficient with technology than I am! -

Life Indoors
Taking classes at a university online for the 7-8 months has been a new experience that is new for a lot of people. Both professors and students alike are learning how to switch over to an online environment, and I think it is hard on everyone. But I am personally trying to make the most of it, even if I end up sleeping through my first lecture sometimes. I think it is important to document what the schooling or work life is like during this time because it is something we have not seen before. Spending the majority of my time at home, I have begun to rekindle past hobbies that I have had. I chose to submit a picture of the things I have crocheted because they were challenging in that I hadn't ever tried to make little characters or animals before this pandemic. I took the picture while on a video call with my friends because ever since this summer, we have chatted or video called to keep in touch with each other and "hangout," even if we have to be physically apart. This times online have been very meaningful to me and crucial in my survival of these times, because I tend to get very lonely and I know many people are struggling with mental health. My mental health is doing pretty okay despite everything going on, and I thank my friends for being there to talk and just have fun and take my mind off of everything challenging going on. -

The World Exists in the Palm of My Hand
The object I'm submitting does not only show us its important during this Pandemic but in everyday life. This object has merely existed for no more than 30 years but has had profound impact on our society. Companies Like Apple Inc. and Samsung Group have made fortunes seeing these items to us. The object that I believe has made a massive impact on my life and the lives of many people around the world are cellphones. These small bricks of metal and plastic seemingly run the world. They control humans and push forward everything from the spread of information to entertainment. Without my phone to keep me entertained, connected, informed and busy; the quarantine and the Pandemic in general would have been much hard. Anywhere in the world I connect and communicate with anyone. During a time when we weren't allowed to leave home phones became a lifeline for communication. I find it very interesting that before the Pandemic people would blame phones for the lack of human contact. Now that the Pandemic has been in full swing the only form of contact we have is through these phones. -

Jewish Melbourne Rosh Hashanah in the time of covid
Our Neighbours offered to blow the shofar for the street. A few Jewish families live on our street in Balaclava. We all gathered in the street, All still and all connected by the mitzvah of hearing the shofar. It was a very special feeling. I felt the need to document this extraordinary event, this moment in history. In this time when so many of us are disconnected this moment of togetherness felt precious. Shofar, Rosh Hashanah, community, connected, isolation, mask, generosity, neighbor, listening, Mitzvah, covid moment, improvising, Balaclava, outside, togetherness -

Instant Update
My MacBook Pro has kept me updated on the current pandemic and news. During lockdown, many days were spent watching movies when I was not outside spending time out on the water, paddle boarding or snorkeling.
