Return to the Big Island
I was stationed in Hawaii with the Army for 3 years. Due to regulations, I was not able to participate in the many hunting and fishing opportunities that can be found there. I was discharged in 2020 just before the pandemic really started. I spent most of 2020 fighting my state for unemployment benefits and looking for a job. I did not travel during the pandemic and only afterwards for work. I want to some day get back to Hawaii and enjoy those missed opportunities. Unfortunately, I think it will be a long time before I am financially stable enough to travel. -

Retiring Betsy for Alani
This was the time my mother, brother, and myself came home with a brand new truck during the Pandemic. It was by far my favorite memory of the pandemic because not only was it the family's first ever brand new vehicle, but it was my first car purchase as well. We had an old hunk of junk 2001 Mercedes Benz SUV that was falling apart on us, which we nicknamed Betsy. She served us well as a reliable SUV, but my family and I had talked at length over the course of months that we needed a new car but couldn't possibly imagine actually getting on, especially during the microchip shortage of 2020-2021. Somehow it happened, and it will always be my favorite memory of the pandemic. Why is it called Alani? Alani in Hawaiian means Orange, and that's pretty much the main feature of the truck. A giant orange pumpkin with wheels. -

The New Utopia
This Vox article by Sarah Khan is about the phenomenon of "pandemic tourism" to tropical places such as Tulum, Mexico; and Honolulu, Hawaii. According to Khan, these tourists, usually Western, seek to escape quarantine restrictions in their home countries and risk the health of foreigners by bringing COVID-19 with them. -

Cruise I : Fillipinos
I remember the announcement in the crew area. All internationals were to go to HR. With international borders closing the cruise ship needed to send all the internationals home. Both my roommates were international, one from Colombia and one from the Philippines. It was an incredibly hectic time, something 20-30 year veterans of the cruise industry never experienced. Being sent home before a contract was finished due to an operational shutdown. The Filipinos were the blood of the ship. Nearly every leadership position in management was held by one. So when the announcement was made there were a lot of questions as to how the ship would continue to operate. Regardless however the company needed to get these people home before they had an even bigger problem on their hand. I wonder if they are doing okay. Since cruise ships are down, they must all still be unemployed. The international lines don't really have many workers' rights, so if you are unemployed you don't get paid. I hope they are able to sort things out. -

Don’t forget the tongs
The closer we get to Halloween the more I’m seeing the creative ways in which people are safely trying to keep the celebration going. This reminder was posted on the Facebook page of Marine Corps base of Hawaii page. My family was stationed there last year and still follow the page now. I chuckled a little when I saw one of the requirements -please use tings while giving away candy. It seems so silly but I guess what ever keeps people safe right? I can understand people’s need to get out and socialize, it seems like very few are willing to continue social distancing. At least people are trying to find alternatives like passing out candy with tongs. Hopefully they won’t get a wave of new COVID cases in base. -

The Olympics
Crazy how the olympics was postponed and cancelled. I met a Japanese lady who worked as a tour guide. She said the olympics was going to be an amazing time business wise for her. She works with olympic atheletes who need translation for Japanese to English. I remember carrying her golf bags. Everyone on the ship wanted to carry her golf bags considering she tipped $20 everytime!
