And a Happy New Year
My boyfriend and I had visited his parents over our Christmas Holiday from college. They had just recently gotten back from Hawaii, so they had travelled through several airports to get to and from Baton Rouge. Despite my boyfriend and I being vaccinated and wearing masks around his family, we came to find out that his mother had COVID (she is a staunch anti-vaxxer). Not one week after our visit, my boyfriend and I both tested positive. We spent Christmas and New Years holed up in our tiny apartment, feeling guilty that we had been to our respective works and to visit my relatives without knowing we were positive. His mother is still suffering from COVID complications, nearly eight months after originally having it. I'll never understand why people assume that public health and health education are a hoax. It could have saved everyone a lot of time and effort and suffering if the truth about vaccinations wasn't barraged by misinformation and public hysteria. -

Covid 19 as a senior
When Covid first started, I never imagined it becoming, as serious or being as long as it was. I was a senior in high school, and on March 13, 2020 I never thought that would be my last day of high school. All I wanted was to participate in all the fun activities, but that never happened as life never really went back to normal. -

Chuggin along
My experience with the pandemic is one and one thing only and that is that school became really hard for no reason at all. Ever since the pandemic schooling has been hard online and even harder coming back to school in person. I think that it is so unfair to have such a change up in an education system developed over many years just be stripped down and rebuilt using sticks and glue. -

COVID Metro Hot Spot - March 2021
While I was looking around the internet for updates on COVID, I came across the information from www.covidactnow.com that Jackson, Michigan was the top Daily New COVID Cases per 100k people in the country. This was on March 26, 2021. As of April 10, 2021, (when I submitted this information) Jackson was still in the number 1 metro spot. This where my family lives & where I work. This was very upsetting to me. Many people still don’t wear masks. And if they do, many wear them under their nose. In some ways, I’m not surprised (but disappointed) that the virus really started to circulate here because of the way the community doesn’t respect public health orders. -

Feminism during Covid
Unfortunately, gender violence has been increased due to Covid. The lockdown can have several psychological and social consequences. According to Mittal and Sighn, the "surge of gender-based violence (it is due to) economic insecurity and alcohol consumption." Also, their research concludes that "gender-based violence has been one of the most neglected outcomes of pandemics." Particularly in Mexico, gender-based violence has been a constant problem, from the "muertas de Juárez" in the 90s to the lack of interest of the Mexican government to deal with the femicide in 2020. Even with the pandemic, the feminist movement has been very active. The photo I chose is from a member of "el bloque negro", a feminist group during the takeover of the CNDH (Human Rights National Commission) on October 3rd. Now, the CNDH is controlled by several feminist groups and works as a shelter for victims of gender-based violence. In Mexico, ten women are killed every day. Even with these statistics, last year president AMLO has eliminated the government’s subsidies for women's shelters. The pandemic demands isolation but the high gender-based violence in our country and the rise of this problem due to the lockdown can't be ignored, even if lives are at health risk. -

I Can't Breathe
This was June 6th 2019. There were Black Lives Matter protests everyday for the last couple weeks. The world was angry and wanted people of color to be treated equally. Everyone in the photo is socially distancing and wearing a mask but still fighting for equal rights. No one forgot about COVID, yet COVID was not the only issue occurring in the world at that time. The Stay At Home Order Lifted - Good or Bad?
Being in CA, especially the OC area where the protests were held, this sense of selfishness is very well now. Many people here tend to be extroverts and feel the need to go out. What they don't know is how fast this virus spreads and how long it takes before you can actually feel the symptoms. Just because your state has slowly started to open up again, it doesn't mean the virus has slowed down or that all of a sudden you're immune. Also, living with my grandfather and grandmother, I see how scary this time must be for them. I try to stay home as much as possible because I know if I get it, they'll get it as well and that puts their life at risks. We are under quarantine for a reason and I think people need to realize that. People's lives are at risk. Please try and stay home or always social distance yourself when you are out. I don't want to lose my family members.
