Golden Knights vs Canadiens Game 2
I am a huge hockey fan and going to games was definitely something that I really missed during the pandemic. Once my family and I were fully vaccinated we were able to travel to Las Vegas and see playoff game. As a result of Covid-19, the NHL only had a 56 game season in 2021 and teams were placed in new divisions and the playoffs had some changes to its formatting, hence the weird matchup of Golden Knights/Canadiens in the Stanley Cup "Semifinals." The Golden Knights lost 3-0 but overall, it was still a really fun experience because I had never been to a Stanley Cup Playoff game before. There was still many Covid-19 restrictions in place during this time, but if I'm remembering correctly these restrictions were more prominent when I returned in December, especially at the arena. -

Zero attendance sports games
As a lifelong hockey fan, specifically for the New York Rangers, it was highly disappointing to find out that the rest of the 2019-2020 season would continue without the attendance of fans at Madison Square Garden due to lockdown restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic. Watching every hockey game at home simply did not compare to being able to witness the firsthand action of rocket slapshots, massive hits, and gruesome fights seen up close in person. Although, I am fortunate that the rest of the season continued, and I was able to see the Rangers compete in the playoffs despite them being eliminated in the first round. Yet, the beginning of lockdown was indeed a scary time for most people. There was no anticipated end to quarantine restrictions nor an end in sight to the highly contagious virus itself. Writing this excerpt two years later, thankfully, the vaccine and the use of masks has allowed for regular attendance to return to most sports arenas and stadiums nationwide. Hopefully, we will find a permanent solution to the virus itself in the future and continue normal sports activities restriction-free! -

The effect of a Pandemic
The photo I chose for this assignment is a picture of an empty hockey arena. Covid-19 really effected not only my decision to play hockey this year but the hockey season in general. Due to underlying conditions, in June I decided it was a smart decision to not continue playing junior hockey this year. The decision to not play junior hockey this year, has led me to start my academic career at UNLV. Not only did Covid-19 effect my decision to continue to play hockey, it also effected all junior hockey season around the world, most leagues are not starting their season until January and some aren’t even playing at all. -

Limited Capacity
This image is from one of the two hockey games this summer I took my brother to, where the entire process was completely changed. Where I used to walk right into the rink with my whole family and sometimes friends to watch him play, I now have to meet with a rink employee who pesters for information on which player I’m watching to make sure there’s only one guest per family, takes my temperature, and guides my brother to his assigned space in the much larger locker room. -

"Be like Jacques"
A tweet from the official twitter account of Library and Archives Canada reminding the public that when goalies first started wearing masks (the pictured Jacques Plante was the first) they were laughed at and derided by fellow players and fans as weak. Now, however, we acknowledge hockey masks save players from disfigurement or even death at the hands of a puck, stick, or opponent's skate. LAC is pointing out the same logic applies to wearing non-medical face masks to prevent the spread of covid19. The tweet itself reads: "This is Jacques. Jacques wore a mask before anyone thought it was cool. He faced ridicule and shaming, but he rose above it. Be like Jacques. #WearAMask" -
