Puppeteer Andy Gaukel had carved out a comfortable niche for himself in the Early Childhood Center at Bronx Community College. Then Covid-19 hit, and he had to find new ways of connecting with the college’s smallest students. In this oral history, he explains how he learned new skills to teach online while maintaining his rapport with his pre-schoolers and engaging their parents in a way that he hadn’t before the pandemic. -

Learning to be a Writing Center Tutor in 2020
I chose to upload my research proposal because I am going to study how tutoring strategies work in an online setting. I would usually have more flexibility with this assignment if we were meeting in-person with out students, but I had to restrict my options to those that were easily conducted in an online setting. I thought it's important to note how the physical conducting of school is not only affected by out situation, but also the actual content of classes too. Most of my classes are working the pandemic into their lesson plans in one way or another. In my Media History class, we looked at artifacts from the Spanish flu in newspapers from 1918-1919 to understand how the flu affected their lives then. -

A New Home
Despite all classes being online, I decided to come back to San Francisco for college after being home in Colorado for 5 months. I've moved apartments, and have a new roommate that I had never met before. So now there are four of us, living through a Pandemic together. We are doing quite well so far. We've made a calendar for chores, and a calendar that shows when each of us has classes so we aren't loud in other rooms while classes are occurring. Not only that, but we've become a family of sorts. We are almost always involved in each others' plans. We work out together, eat together, watch TV together and sometimes even cook together. It's a comfortable situation, and I'm grateful to be having this experience despite not being able to attend classes in person. -

What should the school year of 2020-2021 mean for Cal High’s students?
The Californian, a student run newspaper at California High School in San Ramon, recently ran the story "What should the school year of 2020-2021 mean for Cal High's students?" The story features three student articles, each advocating for a different scenario. The first discusses returning to school full time, the second champions a hybrid learning model, and the third article evaluates fully remote online learning. All of the articles address the challenges and realities of education during the COVID-19 pandemic for students. Interestingly, none of the articles discuss the impact of these models on teachers.
