Public Space and COVID-19: UN-Habitat
In this article from the UN, we learn that public space is distributed inequitably between those in poor urban neighborhoods and wealthier urban areas. They advise that urban planning must include more public space, more green space, and just more space to move in general to allow for social distancing. -

Apache County (AZ) Library COVID-19 Guidelines after March 22, 2021
This copyright-free image of a public-facing government webpage displays the COVID-19 protocols in place at Apache County (AZ) library locations after Governor Doug Ducey ordered local governments to phase out public health mandates on March 22, 2021. Unlike urban areas within the state, rural Apache County in northeastern Arizona no longer required mask use inside private or government (public) buildings and facilities. -

Is This the End?
Personally, I feel that we are not near the end of the pandemic. However, it really seems like things are beginning to open back up. Some states have already lifted mask mandates and others have set dates for current mask mandates to expire. Businesses here in Arizona have opened back up to full capacity. I just think it's weird for a state to lift the mandate, but still say that "Masks are highly encouraged." They also still require masks to be work in government offices and COVID testing and immunization sites. If it's highly encouraged, and need to be worn in government buildings, why not out in other public spaces? It's all just because of the economy and business. That truly trumps human welfare and common sense and decency in the United States. It really is business interests and capitalism above all and it's disgusting. -

A Map of San Francisco's New Street Art
Street art has proliferated across the San Francisco Bay Area in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. News outlet, Broke-Ass Stuart, featured a map of the street art that is popping up in San Francisco's public spaces. As the article states, the art is "turning many of [San Francisco's] empty, commercial corridors into actual art walks." The specific map highlights art created by artists involved in the Paint the Void initiative. -

Masks at Blackhawk Plaza
A whimsical statue of a child and adult reading a storybook with geese emerging from the pages is adorned with masks. The presence of COVID-19 is evident in many local public spaces, even when the public spaces are devoid from crowds of people. This photograph was taken in Danville, California at Blackhawk Plaza. -

A child plays at San Francisco's Palace of Fine Arts
A small child plays on an empty lawn in front of San Francisco's Palace of Fine Arts. A favorite place to relax for local residents, as well as a event and tourist hot spot, the Palace of Fine Arts is typically a spectacle. On any given day, groups gather for picnics, bridal parties pose for photographs, and tourists zoom by on Segways. The emptiness of the Palace of Fine Arts during the early days of California's shelter-in-place orders is definitely a moment in time. -

Californians must wear face masks in public under coronavirus order issued by Newsom
It is now required to wear masks in California. I finally broke down and bought a sewing machine to make masks for my family. Most masks are fairly cheap right now. Going for about $5-$10 each for a homemade one and about $20 for nicer manufactured ones. I was able to buy enough supplies to make masks for everyone I know for the price I would have spend to purchase me and my family enough to wear and wash for the week. I watched a tutorial on how to make the masks and by last night I am now able to bake a mask in under ten minutes. I am bummed about the mask mandate but it does not affect me much as I was already wearing them. Masks are making life difficult for people like me who are Hard of Hearing. I worry what next year will look like when the schools open and I go back to teaching. -

Drone footage over Boston
t feels like the streets of Boston haven’t been this empty since the cows (apocryphally) laid out the paths centuries ago. Aram Boghosian, a regular freelance photographer and videographer for the Boston Globe, shot aerial video with a drone over several Boston hotspots on Monday and Tuesday. On a normal weekday afternoon, the city bustles with workers and tourists and commuters alike. But in the footage, the city sits nearly empty. It’s a ghost of what it was just a week ago, before Gov. Charlie Baker banned gatherings of over 25 people, established tight restrictions on stores and restaurants, and closed the schools in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. Newbury Street and Faneuil Hall Marketplace are nearly devoid of shoppers. The seagulls on Summer Street seem to outnumber the pedestrians. Traffic is breezy in and out of the city, and an empty Fenway Park won’t see a pitch anytime soon. Only a handful of people walk and bike across Boston Common, which hosted a rally of over 13,000 densely packed people less than three weeks ago. It seems unimaginable now *Drone footage of Boston during quarantine
