My trip back To India
I study in Chicago. I am originally from India, so when the second wave of covid hit India I was still in school. Fearing my family's safety I decided to go back to India. Over the summer I spent most of my time inside trying to find oxygen sources for people in need. At one point my phone was filled with numbers of oxygen suppliers many of them turned out to be a scam artists. I still cannot believe how at a time when it seemed like everyone was dying from Covid people somehow still found ways to make money illegally. -

Nurse handover Emergency Department, St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne
This photograph was taken in August 2020, the time when daily and active cases in Victoria's second wave were at their peak with hospitals adapting services and protocols in response. The photograph shows a nurse handover in the hospital's Emergency Department. The red line on the floor marks the boundary of the "hot zone" area dedicated to the care of patients regarded as infectious. Staff wear prescribed Level 4 PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) of gowns, face protection and N95 masks. -

"How We Survive the Winter" - The Atlantic Monthly
As the winter of 2020 approached, James Hamblin, a staff writer for the Atlantic Monthly magazine, published a longform article providing readers with a comprehensive overview of the dangers the oncoming winter would pose during the pandemic. These dangers included, but were not limited to, rising infections (i.e. a second wave of infections), the lack of socially distant amenities (i.e outdoor restaurants and public parks) for people, rising rates of depression due to further social isolation, and the lack of proper ventilation in indoor areas contributing to further infections. These increased risk factors, according to Hamblin, will make winter one of the deadliest periods of the COVID-19 pandemic. Hamblin’s warning is supported by a resurgence in COVID-19 cases in Australia and South Africa, which at the time of the article’s publication was experiencing a Southern Hemisphere winter. To manage the risks associated with winter, Hamblin provides a list of actions that readers can take. These measures include accepting that the pandemic will not be over anytime soon, preparing for more lockdowns, and cancelling holiday gatherings involving extended families. Furthermore, Hamblin implores federal and local governments to establish testing infrastructure to track and contain COVID-19, which will minimize the infection and death rates. However, Hamblin notes that the Trump administration’s mishandling of the pandemic and misinformation of the public do not bode well for controlling the virus. In sum, Hamblin’s article provides a comprehensive overview of what informed writers thought of the dangers of the then oncoming winter of 2020, and what measures could be taken by the average person and the federal government to minimize the spread of COVID-19. -

WHO’s COVID-19 Infection map, 23 Oct 2020
The WHO is an authoritative source for tracking COVID-19 infection rates via various countries Centers of Disease Control. For several months, most countries contained COVID-19 infection rates. As expected, infection rates dramatically increased as governments relaxed restrictions. This represented the forecasted second-wave. Unlike the first wave, mortality rates were much lower. Several possible causes from improved pre-vaccinne treatment plans to poor testing and tacking during first wave biased mortality rates. Lastly, it represented born-digital content regarding COVID-19. -

First Wave never ended
Here we have discussion on the first a second wave topics. The second wave of covid was supposed to come after the first wave ended, and would perhaps be less intense. However, due to early reopening the first wave never actually ended in the US. I included this tweet because there seems to be a lot of confusion regarding the first and second waves of covid. Many are talking about the second wave hitting the US now as cases spike, but disregard the fact that cases were never began significantly going down. Therefore, we are still in the first wave. Even in my own personal life, people are confused and mixed up about the first and second waves. -

CDC and Protests
With the eruption of protests after the death of George Floyd, coronavirus did not take a break. It is still a primary health concern, but has taken a backseat to racism and systemic oppression that is afflicting the U.S. In this article, the CDC is urging social gatherings that are for protests to follow a certain set of guidelines. The twitter user points out the hypocrisy present in both the lack of discussion on the President's proposed politcal gatherings, as well as the lack of recommendations when individuals were protesting to reopen the country -

Face Masks are Everywhere
People are growing exasperated with the mercurial nature of the safety guidelines that are being provided by both state and local governments. Combined with a reopening plan that is different in every state, the average citizen is frustrated about what they can, and can not do. What will be safe, and what won't be safe moving forward? When should we wear masks and when do we not need to?
