I hope the future has more nature, and animals can talk. (The bulldozer is tearing down buildings, and the animals are attacking, to make more room for nature.) -

I hope that in the future I am a gajillionaire and the world will have high tech cars, machines, etc. All humans will be smart so schools will not exist! I also hope that people will live forever, but that will also mean that people cannot have babies. Which means that we cannot reproduce because the world would be over populated. The world will also have a high technology system named "Operation Last Long" which will allow us to survive when the Sun eats Earth, which will be kind of cool because we will be living inside the Sun. The sight would be cool and I'd be very fortunate to not be melting! But before that happens life will be extraordinary! All food will be brought to the next level! Everybody will have super powers too! And Magic will finally exist! With infinite land, space and etc. with infinite money too! Because then everyone will be gajillionaires! So there will be no homeless people and no one will suffer from financial problems. -

Santa Monicans Rediscover the Joy of Walking and Biking and Reclaim their Streets
As an architect and planner with a strong interest in creating sustainable communities, I have worked for years on promoting safer and lively streets which encourage walking, bicycling, outdoor activity and social interaction. Too often our streets prioritize moving and parking cars over all other activity. One of the most positive aspects of the Covid pandemic was the number of residents I saw walking and bicycling with their families. The Ocean Avenue bike lanes now enable cyclists to enjoy the ocean view instead of fearing being crushed by a tourbus or foodtruck. Another exciting development is the expansion of outdoor restaurants into curbside parking, parking lots or even previous auto travel lanes. The result is a much more lively streetscape, a safe way to enjoy a restaurant meal, and a great way to enjoy our perfect climate. Let's continue this trend of reclaiming our streets for people to walk, bicycle, scoot, dine, shop and mingle, by reducing the space we sacrifice to moving and parking cars. -

Hope for a normal life
This was written as an assignment for Paula Flynn's fifth grade class at Franklin Elementary School in Santa Monica, CA. I hope that after covid i can live my normal school, spring, fall, winter, and summer life including: playing with my friends, doing sleepovers, going to the beach/playground, eating at a restaurant with no mask, summer camps. -

Ghost City Avenue S
"Avenue S" a new addition to "Ghost City," 1998-2020. It is a ongoing creation of new web pages begin in March 2020 containing fragmented images and texts that are a poetic meditation on isolation. Because it felt like a ghost town everywhere at the beginning of the pandemic: the streets were empty; the beaches and parks were closed people stayed at home or walked alone wearing masks, I wanted to provide an alternative experience. Avenue S, in retrospect has become a visual journal of the year of Covid-19. -

LIFE DURING LOCKDOWN
During the first month of the lockdown in Santa Monica, California, Catherine Butterfield and Ron West started making short films for their friends and family, attempting to find humor in the very strange situation we all suddenly found ourselves in. Entitled LIFE DURING LOCKDOWN, they assumed it would be a very short lived project. A year later they still find themselves doing it, and in fact are on their 61st film as of March 21, 2021. At one point, having run out of interesting things to say about their own relationship, they started to tell stories using the marionettes Catherine and her mother created when she was in high school. These films fall under the banner BUTTERPOTTS PLAYERS PRESENT, are much more technically advanced, (Catherine taught herself iMovie) and employ the voices and sometimes even the faces of talented actor friends who were willing to play along: Jean Smart, Bob Odenkirk, Richard Kind, Peter Onorati, Priscilla Barnes, Kiff Vandenheuvel, Nancy Youngblut, Nancy Ritter and a host of others.
