The Future of Food Influencers
The way the restaurants advertise is typically by word of mouth or since the emergence of social media, food influencers. Food influencers specialize in creating social media posts that garner the attention of followers and persuade them to patron the restaurant. As the article by Jenny Dorsey points out since the coronavirus pandemic hit restaurants have had to re-evaluate their relationships with influencers and influencers have had to re-evaluate themselves. Restaurants can no longer comp meals to influencers and they want influencers to be more skilled to create story-driven reviews that give a heart to the restaurant. One of the most important parts of this article is the desire to know the line cook who continued working during the pandemic. The people who kept the restaurants alive and continued to serve the community and the push for influencers to include their stories with their posts. -

Fear of the 'quarantine 15'
This article discusses the emergence of the phrase “quarantine 15” and the impact of anti-fatness on our society even as it is being ravaged by a global pandemic. Author Virgie Tovar ties the phrase to people's need to connect and the ease of doing so through self-deprecation. Dr. Lindo Bacon attributes the trend to the anxieties of dealing with isolation and other factors directly connected to the coronavirus pandemic and our social stigma against mental health issues. Which reason is more accurate is tough to say and may differ from individual to individual. What is certain is that while people are dealing with changes to their food habits and environmental stressors they are also being pressured to lose weight. -

A Garden Grows in Danville
At the start of the Bay Area's shelter-in-place orders, there was a lot of uncertainty about the food supply chain. Given that we live with a couple of high-risk individuals, we wanted to ensure that we had access to fresh food without risking exposure to COVID-19. We quickly got to work and planted squash, tomato, pumpkin, peppers and pea plants. We involved our children from the beginning and have had a lot of fun gardening as a family as it has brought us comfort and has been incredibly therapeutic during these trying and uncertain times. "This is the best meal of my life!"
Cousins, Claire Gagnon (1), Taylor Anderson (10), Jessie Anderson (6), Logan Gagnon (5), and Delaney Gagnon (8), have sheltered-in-place together since March 13, 2019. They have had incredible attitudes and have shown true resiliency in their abilities to process this new normal. After over 11 weeks of eating home cooked meals, the adults decided it was time for pizza delivery! The kids were ecstatic and exclaimed over and over, "This is the BEST meal of my life!" It was sweet to see them take such joy in something they likely took for granted before this experience. -

June 4th and the store is still low on supplies
I was hopeful that the stores would recover quickly from the panic buying taking place in March. But here we are in June and the local Walmart, once restocked only stays that way for a day. For a while my neighbors were trading supplies, toilet paper for sugar, garbage bags for dish-soap. But at this point it is getting frustrating. I always had my favorite brands before all of this started. Now, I am lucky if I can even find a similar product. I left the store on June 4th just happy I was able to find cheese at all. Every recipe I cook tastes a little bit off because I had to replace one or two ingredients. I just don't understand all of this. I heard that farms are dumping milk and killing off their entire farm. Meanwhile we are being told there is going to be a meat and dairy shortage. Hopefully things start to look more normal now that they have re-opened California. We are supposed to be going to stage four soon. -

Restaurants can now sell beer, wine and cocktails to-go during shelter-in-place, but will that help keep them around?
Amidst California's shelter-in-place orders, San Francisco Bay Area restaurants struggled to stay in business. One week into the shelter-in-place, the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) relaxed regulations and announced that restaurants and bars, with adequate licensing, could sell alcohol through delivery and take-out measures in an attempt to prevent permanent restaurant and bar closures. The guidelines stated that alcohol must either come prepackaged (i.e. in a can or bottle) or must accompany food if the drink is prepared on site. Patrons were directed to transport the alcohol in their trunks and were to consume on private property. For some restaurants and bars, the new regulations led to a recovery of approximately 50% of typical alcohol sales. For others, the regulations have provided little relief. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the San Francisco Bay Area restaurant and bar industry has yet to be fully realized. -

Walnut Creek Brewery, Calicraft, Launches Quarantine Blues Juicy IPA, Live Song
Calicraft, a brewery located in Walnut Creek, California, launched "the Quarantine Blues Juicy IPA" during the state's shelter-in-place. Restaurants and bars across the state are struggling to stay in business and some establishments, like Calicraft Brewing Company, are finding creative ways to drive business despite the difficult conditions. I discovered the beer on Memorial Day and it brought some much needed levity to the day. The label includes a clever poem/song that reads: Sittin' on the porch, got nothin' to do. Grab yourself a can of the Quarantine Blues. Kidz going crazy, you could use a little hazy. Crack yourself a can of the Quarantine Blues. Runnin' outta TP, makes you feel kinda queasy. Pour yourself a glass of the Quarantine Blues! Drink up: at home. Pair with: Tiger King, Homemade Bread. calicraft.com // @califcraft #ASU #HST580 #SanFranciscoBayArea -
