The Reveal of True Colors Through Chaos
This image represents the disruption that COVID-19 brought upon the daily lives of members in American society. Additionally, it could be used to symbolize the calm before the storm. The sudden outbreak of COVID-19 and almost immediate initiation of mandatory quarantine was chaotic enough. However, extended seclusion and cruel cops triggered a violent uproar within the hearts and actions of civilians. Within the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic, American society has endured an almost complete shut down of businesses, initiation of new safety procedures, protests for black lives matter, protests for blue lives matter, anti-mask protestors, virtual school, the daily life of wearing a mask constantly while in public, toilet paper crises, the loss of loved ones, earthquakes, hurricanes, wildfires, and much more. *A photograph, from architecturaldigest.com -

Andrew Small Oral History, 2020/09/20
This interview shares the early-on Covid-19 quarantine experience of Andrew Small, a second-year Asian studies major at Northeastern University. Andrew talks about where he was in the middle of March when universities started to shut down and send their students home, where he went, how quarantine and at-home learning affected his first year at Northeastern and touches upon what his reaction to how the state of Maine and how America responded to the pandemic. He also speaks briefly on how he thinks this will affect the future actions of Americans and what the pandemic has revealed about America. This interview was conducted as an assignment for HIST 1215: Origins of Today, instructed by Molly Nebiolo. -

2020: A lifetime in a year... and we aren't even done yet...
2020 could have an entire history book unto itself. So much has happened this year... Obviously, the big stories everyone is familiar with; BLM protests, Covid19, Wildfires literally EVERYWHERE, but what about the smaller, but just as important stories that get overshadowed? For example, on Feb 6th, Christina Koch, a NASA astronaut, returned to Earth after 328 days in space, the most days completed by any woman ever, and I bet you don't even remember hearing about it. Thats why I though this time line would be a good addition to the archive. It helps put the events of the year (as of July 4th) in an easy to read format to help us all remember everything that happened this year. Hopefully, the back half of the year is much less eventful, but I doubt it. -

Some do Support the Blue
With all the negative in the press, it would be easy for one to think that Law Enforcement officers are out there all alone with no support at all. This is simply not true. This article shows that there are those who support LEO's and that officers/deputies/cops are not fighting the good fight all alone. -

One Step At A Time
Write a brief description of what you are submitting. This essay was produced as a part of the American Studies program at California High School in San Ramon, California. The essay is in response to the prompt "Is America currently living up to its core values?" This essay argues The United States of America is living up to its core values because we have had a breakthrough in equality even if you don’t think America hasn't changed since 1865. If we aren't follwing this value of eqauilty we are forsure on the right path because slavery historycally was just a little while back. And Individualism has carried the economy to be stable and maintain balance for The United States . It also includes references to the following modern events: Black Lives matter Act and the stand on wearing mask's in public during Corona virus -

The Bigger Picture
The image I chose represents the pandemic, as it shows the many people protesting in the back with masks on. It also represents Lil Baby’s solidarity with the current BLM movement. He’s leading a George Floyd Protest in his hometown of Atlanta on a bicycle. This image is very important to me because as a Lil Baby, as well as a huge hip-hop fan, it represents how although we have a worldwide pandemic going on, that we shouldn’t stray away from the true problems in our communities. Baby used his huge platform and fanbase to spread his feelings and stance on a very relevant issue during today’s day. Even though he had COVID to worry about, he didn’t let it stop him from participating and leading protests over an issue that he believed strongly in. -

Political Activism in the Midst of a Pandemic: BLM March Columbus Circle
A Black Lives Matter Protest is disbanded early due to the city curfew. I left this particular protest at 7pm to get home by 8pm but many people chose to stay. The NYPD started mass arresting groups of people who were out protesting after curfew. -

The Watchman of The Turning Clouds
I took this picture while on a BLM march. The officer standing on the roof of the police station was one of a few who were taking pictures of the crowd. I believe the image has a lonely quality to it, given the empty windows, lone figure, and grey clouds. Loneliness has been a key factor in the pandemic, and this gets that across fairly well. It also shows the social turmoil going on underneath, both in its context of the establishment surveying the protest going on below, and the imagery of the authority of these times standing atop a building that seems hollow on a faded world. -

Protest your faith.
If you were to take a stroll down Main St. of Huntington Beach, you might be surprised by what you see. I work in downtown Huntington Beach. Protests around these three topics has been quite regular. With a vast mixture of people wearing and not wearing facial coverings as mandated by the state. On this particular day there was a "black lives matter" protest, which was accompanied and/or countered by Christian evangelists as well as a single individual protesting for the re-opening of California businesses. In overhearing a conversation amongst the Christian group, it seems they feel that Covid-19 has been brought on as a punishment to those who have not repented for their sins. Here God is used as an authority figure to insight fear and shame to outgroup members or non-Christians. The pandemic seems to have had an impact on the effect of community in religion in that members that choose to gather in person must view the pandemic in a light that cannot effect them. -

Comparison/Contrast of Looter and Bankers
When the early BLM protests during the pandemic led to some instances of looting we saw it on the news and the BLM movement was blamed. However, it is common for rich executives and bankers to get away with much larger crimes. Picture depicts a young masked man stealing a TV, across the street from an older man wearing a suit leaving a bank stealing a large bag of money. The older man says to the younger man, "amateur". -

Strange crossover between anti mask protests and George Floyd BLM protests
Scottsdale councilman Guy Phillips made national headlines today due to his comments at an anti mask rally in Scottsdale. Phillips parroted the popular BLM phrase and George Floyds dying words "I Can't Breathe" in relation to his feelings on being forced to wear a mask. A portion of Americans around the country and here in Arizona have been expressing disdain for new mandates requiring masks in public to prevent further spread of the virus through protests and gatherings. These new mask mandates come as Covid cases spike here in Arizona and across the nation. I found this tweet and the actions of Phillips here to be especially noteworthy due to the complete misunderstanding of not only the public health recommendations regarding masks but also the core message of BLM protestors. This elected official seems to disregard the dying words of Floyd by mimicking them to express his unwillingness to wear a mask, which, to me, seemed absurd. A big part of this stage of Covid in America is both the "giving up" of trying to flatten the curve by many people and government officials and the "anti health mandates" portion of the public and government officials who have turned the virus into some sort of political debate. Phillips exemplifies the latter, and I felt it necessary to include this example as I felt this is a rather uniquely American phenomenon or thought process. -

A Tale of Two Pandemics
Declaring that being "pro-Black is not anti-White" while memorializing the names of African-Americans who have fallen victim to police brutality and racism, this homemade protest poster in a west Wichita, Kansas, neighborhood reflects the civil unrest roiling the country amidst the omnipresent COVID-19 pandemic. On June 2, just three days before this image was taken, a BLM protest organized less than a mile from this neighborhood as part of a wave of demonstrations involving thousands of citizens that rolled across Wichita. Many demonstrators wore masks as a precaution against the COVID-19 virus, but many more did not, despite Kansas's slow but steady increase in COVID cases. Large gatherings, such as the racial justice protests that have spread across the USA and the world, have unnerved public health officials, who fear that a lack of social distancing and proper protective measures will only exacerbate an already insidious disease's ruthless transmission. -

Stay Home, Wash Your Hands, BLM
I posted the original of this poster a few weeks ago, and I was happy to see that it has been modified with "BLM - Spectemur agendo," the second part of which seems to be Latin meaning, "Let us be judged by our acts." -

#BlackOutTuesday on The Daily Smile
I've been listening to a lot of podcasts, so much so that I've ventured beyond my normal genres and entered into new ones. Podcasts help me pass the time, and provide a mental escape from a daily routine that has become so monotonous. Given COVID-19, one recent podcast I subscribed to is the Daily Smile hosted by Nikki Boyer. Today, there was no episode. Instead, Nikki explained that owing to the recent police murder of George Floyd and the protests across the U.S., there would be no new content. The Daily Smile, and its company Wondery refrained from uploading any new content today. -

Doctor Explains Why He Supports George Floyd Protests Amid Pandemic
Looking at protests across the country, I've wondered what the implications are for the pandemic. This doctor explains the difference between pool parties and protests over racist violence, is that only one is necessary. I believe one of the best things white people can do right now is listen to black people about the importance of these protests and help advocate for necessary change.
