A different way to experience restaurant dining
During this pandemic, the food industry has had to drastically modify its usual operation to stay in business but also ensure they are practicing proper social distancing. Chef Grant Achatz's exclusive molecular gastronomy restaurant Alinea thrives on the in-person dining experience. Rather than closing up shop, he's sharing a little taste of what Alinea is all about by creating to-go meals. Photograph was taken in my mom's kitchen in the suburbs of Chicago -

Domestic Violence Works From Home
As the stay at home order across Illinois continues to extend as we reach the second month in quarantine, many have been trapped in unsafe situations with those they share a residence with. Domestic violence works from home, people have lost their small escape for the day. Neighborhoods in Chicago and across the city have been helping others get out of stressful situations by providing discreet messaging templates that often provide the survivor to offer their address so police could be called or for the survivor to be picked up. Recently, Chicago mayor, Lorilightfoot has also launched her plan to help by training local domestic violence hotline phone operators to give out promo codes so survivors can be driven to a safe location by a rideshare driver for free. #DePaulHST391 -

Photograph of a flyer.
This is a photograph of a flyer posted on the side of a Hispanic grocery store at the end of my street in Northside Chicago on my way back from a quick grocery trip. This GoFundMe was created March 20th by members of the Uptown Buena Park Solidarity Network. The Uptown and Buena Park areas are home to older people, people out of homes, migrants of many countries and cultures, and more recently, young working professionals. The UBP Solidarity Network Twitter bio says they are, “an all-volunteer, grassroots group operating in Chicago's Uptown and Buena Park neighborhoods.” They set up Google forms for people in need to request groceries, bill payments or help being sheltered. Although they only exist on social media, they use physical signs because they do not want to leave out the members of the community who are most vulnerable at this time. Their social media provide links to forms where people can request help from older citizen care, grocery runs and helping with bill payments. #DePaulHST391 -

Feeding the Neighborhood
COVID-19 has been particularly hard for Chicago’s homeless. My auntie and I tried to help out on the West Side, by making turkey and Italian beef and serving them. We also provided kits to individuals, so they could use them to feed their families. #DePaulHST391 -

Coping Through Creativity, Part 2: A Colorful Take on Crisis
During the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s been hard to find our footing. With widespread cancellations and closures, social distancing has become the new normal. Easter traditions restored a much-needed sense of familiarity amid the anxiety and upheaval. Annual egg decorating offered the chance to dip into creativity and focus on fun. But even these colorful creations provided a clearer picture of how we’re processing these changes. While the eggs are still dyed, they take on a different message this year and reflect the uncertain time we find ourselves in. #DePaulHST391 -

The remnants of a flyer taped to a lamp post in Chicago's Hyde Park neighborhood, advertising a rent strike against MAC Properties, one of Hyde Park's biggest leasing companies. "Capitalism is the Virus"
During this pandemic, it is not hard to notice the flaws that have been exposed in capitalist society. COVID-19 has shown what the effects massive layoffs and a surge of unemployment has on the economic infrastructure. There is a weak, built foundation behind capitalism—the framework is insufficient in providing for a large portion of the American public. As many of us are ‘sheltered in place’, unemployed, and struggling to pay rent, another worry places pressure on the public—the failure of the economy, and another Depression era. Anxieties are high, and the reasoning is valid. #DePaulHST391 -

"The End is Nigh"
Walking down the street, it is more likely than not for one to stumble into a message like this. While many of these messages serve as a way to limit anxieties—bringing Chicago together in this ‘shelter in place’ initiative—this message differs. I cannot say that this is meant to bring people together. Yet, in a way, it is relatable. These last few weeks have produced a range of emotions in everyone—and while it is important to produce uplift for pedestrians emerging from their homes, it is also important to recognize that messages like “the end is nigh” is equally representative of the emotions that are present right now. #DePaulHST391 -

"This Will Pass"
It has been a common occurrence to see messages in windows, streets, and porches in the neighborhoods of Chicago. Social distancing has instilled barriers into people’s lives and these messages are a sign from others that they are with you, while we all experience the effects of COVID-19. Some of these messages are uplifting while others can be relatively nihilistic. Either way it can be seen as an expression of the anxieties that stem from this plague—there are plenty of unknowns, but messages like “this will pass” is a nice reminder that community is still present in these trying times.#DePaulHST391 -
