HIST30060: 3CR COMMUNITY RADIO
I am a radio presenter and producer and during the lockdowns in Naarm/Melbourne I had to learn how to remote record and broadcast my content. I found myself hushing my housemates in order to record hour-long content from my headphone mic, very solo and DIY. It felt good to be part of a greater community project, broadcasting punk, DIY, and political chat to our regular listeners through the lockdowns. -

Free Haircuts!
In the early days of the pandemic, like many others, I needed a haircut so badly. Again, like many others, I took to cutting my own hair. Instead of just chopping at my hair, I closely followed a youtube video posted by celebrity hairdresser Brad Mondo. Since I have given myself three or four haircuts in this same style. It works! I always get compliments and no one ever suspects that I did it myself. I have long and thick hair so this method is saving me a lot money each time I need a haircut!! -

What Did I Do?
I BOUGHT ANOTHER KITTEN! I don't know why but I wanted a third little kitty and now I have a hamster and 3 kitties. Clea, Pebbles, Ivan and Bananas are there names. Next on the list is a Pit Bull. I also moved to a townhome in symmes township and played lots of golf. -

Crafting to Keep Sane! - Suffolk University
Every New Year, I make a promise to myself to try my hand at a new skill. In 2020 I was eager to learn how to embroider. Of course, only a few months into this year, we were slammed with the reality of Covid-19. Many of us felt depressed and isolated. I know that I was feeling especially guilty about all the extra time I had at home but felt no motivation to try and achieve goals that I had set earlier in the year. One day in April I was scrolling Reddit and came across an embroidery group. Suddenly it dawned on me that I had not even attempted to try my hand at embroidery! Lucky for me, I already had the supplies. I sat there a while wondering what to stich. Then the image, we all know so well by now, of the Coronavirus molecule popped up on the Nightly News. I knew that would be my pattern for my first ever attempt at needlepoint. It quickly became a small project that I am very proud of and it is my little souvenir from this crazy year. -

Sewing fabric masks
This is a photo of my wife making a set of fabric masks for the family as no masks have been available to purchase. There were many patterns available to download online or instructional youtube videos. This design allows for one to insert a disposable tissue or paper wipe for additional protection. My wife wore her mask once or twice to the supermarket, other than that we have not had cause to use them. -

Jolt Action DIY Face mask, no sew bandana mask
Jolt Action is a non profit based in Texas that typically responds to immigration related issues, in the art work we see a digital step by step description of how to make a no sew mask. The work prioritizes utility over artistry, I see this as a common theme through the non profit organization posts. -

DIY Respirator
In an attempt to circumvent OSHA laws, hospitals are now converting scuba diving masks to replace OSHA required PAPR masks. This is weeks after failing to provide necessary respirators to hospital staff. -

Handmade ‘glove’ using crocheted wrist band with recycled plastic bags.
I didn’t want to waste gloves that Health workers might need. We were all getting inventive about protective gear. -

The last resort
We began rationing our toilet paper quickly once we realized we had missed our opportunity to stock up. We assumed people would calm down and refrain from hoarding. We were wrong. I bought a bag of cheap terry cloth material and cut it up to use "for number 1only!" -

Unmasking Kindness
Days before Minnesota's official shelter in place, people's homes began to transform into small factories. Turning out masks by the dozens, and sometimes even hundreds, Minnesotans answered the call for the protective headwear. Isolation did not stop people from joining together in common cause. Local businesses gave away materials, and local hospitals created drive-by drop offs for people to donate masks. Once we ran out of fabric, my mother turned to old clothes to meet the demands. Pictured above, I am modeling on of the first masks she made. We donated to family members, friends, neighbors, and also to a local hospital. We also shipped some to my brother's coworkers at the Pueblo, Colorado Health Department. In total, my mom has made around 100 masks, showing that not all heroes wear capes, but they do wear masks. #DePaulHST391 -

Handmade Face Mask
Face mask made by St. Louis-based textile artist Katherine Huelsing, my mother. I helped my mom cut and pin fabric while she sewed the masks together. She gave one to each of our friends and family members and donated the rest to a local hospital. There is currently a severe shortage of personal protective equipment in hospitals, leaving many healthcare professionals at risk of infection. The CDC recommended that everyone use PPE when out in public at this time. #DePaulHST391 -

Hand Sanitizer Scare - Rx Compound Centre
After having dozens of families come into our pharmacy looking for hand sanitizer we finally decided to start making some to help people out. The first day we got a call from the Columbia school system for 800 oz of it. Also, almost every customer that came in added a bottle to their order. -
