‘New normal’ aims to keep economy running: Minister
Due to the pandemic, economies around the world has been facing great difficulties. The 'New Normal' is the Indonesian government's plan in trying to keep the Indonesian economy running while still combating the pandemic by keeping the government's health precautionary measures. However, personally I disagree with the term 'New Normal' because we don't want social/physical distancing to be normal. Instead, I believe the term should be phrased as something that means transitioning back to the normal before the pandemic. -

Boarded up Bars in the Byward Market: the Aude Dubliner
Many establishments in the popular shopping, dining, and bar area of the Byward Market have boarded up their front windows with plywood to reduce the chance of robbery while they remain closed due to the pandemic and restrictions of gatherings. While some remain plain, or are painted black, other establishments chose to hire muralists to liven up the natural wood with images related to vibe of each bar. The Aude Dubliner Irish pub in the Market has some of its windows covered with murals depicting small items of significance for the pub in addition to plastered posters explaining the shut down. While there are more murals and posters around its corner, no photographs were taken out of respect for the homeless individuals taking advantage of the patio and overhang there as a place to sleep. -

Boarded up Bars in the Byward Market: Heart and Crown Posters - Keep Calm
Boarded up Bars in the Byward Market: Heart and Crown Posters Many establishments in the popular shopping, dining, and bar area of the Byward Market have boarded up their front windows with plywood to reduce the chance of robbery while they remain closed due to the pandemic and restrictions of gatherings. While some remain plain, or are painted black, other establishments chose to hire muralists to liven up the natural wood with images related to vibe of each bar. Some also plastered the wood with posters. One such poster display is on one of the boarded windows of the Heart and Crown pub not taken up by murals. Riffing off the popular Second World War posters in Britain which read "Keep Calm and Carry On" they read "Keep Calm and Shop Local" as well as "Keep Calm and Support Local Artists" in an attempt to create a sense of solidarity and duty when facing this crisis. They were created by the Byward Market itself. -

Boarded up Bars in the Byward Market: The Heart and Crown Murals

While some remain plain, or are painted black, other establishments chose to hire muralists to liven up the natural wood with images related to vibe of each bar. The well known Heart and Crown Irish pub in the Market has some of its windows covered with murals depicting small items of significance for the pub in addition to plastered posters explaining the shut down. Boarded up Bars in the Byward Market: Chateau Lafayette ("The Laff")
Many establishments in the popular shopping, dining, and bar area of the Byward Market have boarded up their front windows with plywood to reduce the chance of robbery while they remain closed due to the pandemic and resulting restrictions of gatherings. While some remain plain, or are painted black, other establishments chose to hire muralists to liven up the natural wood with images related to vibe of each bar. The boards on the windows of the Chateau Lafayette, often called simply "the Laff" by locals, read "It's going to be OK./ We'll be back." A sentiment which at the beginning of the pandemic, in late March, was comforting but now seems overly optimist and distant. -

Keep Your Rent Poster: 'Didn't Pay Your Rent? What Comes Next?"
A flyer/poster stapled to an electrical/telephone pole at the corner of McArthur Avenue and the Vanier Parkway, next to a now well known mural in support of frontline workers and across the street from a large grocery store. The area around this pole hosts several apartment tours and the Vanier neighbourhood has a reputation as an area which, in some part, hosts numerous impoverished individuals. The poster is promoting the movement for non payment of rent if circumstances are such that it is impossible during the pandemic, and the prevention of eviction during the pandemic. This is a contensious issue; there are those who feel landlords are profiting from misery and the basic need for shelter while others do not feel depriving landlords of income is the answer and that the renting of properties is a perfectly legitimate method of earning a living. The sign reads "DIDN'T PAY YOUR RENT?/ WHAT COMES NEXT?/ Jobs lost./ Hours cut./ Bills to pay./ Families to feed./ CONNECT WITH YOUR NEIGHBOURS" followed by several different contacts -

Toronto renters are now staging protests outside the mansions of their landlords
As many are struggling to pay their rent due to reduced earning potential or lay offs due to the pandemic, the #KeepYourRent movement has emerged urging nonpayment of rent. To highlight the perceived hypocrisy of landlords and their organizations demanding rent, and claiming they will themselves face hardship without the income, this article discusses tenants protesting in front of the estates of their landlords and the reactions of the landlords to this event. -

The Bank
This is a photo I took in line at the bank, when I had to deposit a paycheck. I took this photo because of all the stories I herd about during the depression, when people would line up at the bank, demanding their money back. Was this the case on that day? Maybe, but probably not. Is this another great depression. I sure hope not. *Original text in "Contributor:" Matthew Paluzzi, Fordham University, SOCI4421 -

Fears for after the lockdown
I have become very fearful for what the future holds for a number of reasons. We are in a time of many uncertainties and truly do not know what the future holds. There are many implications about how society will be after all this is over. The first reason why I am fearful is if this is the new status quo. What I mean by that is, when there is a new virus that comes around, are we going to have to stop everything that we are doing and stay at home. Can we endure that multiple times as a country, because with just this our economy has skyrocketed downward and millions are without work. I am scared of a society that closes down everything and puts millions of people into hardship due to unemployment just because a new disease has arisen. What if this were to become a seasonal thing. Another thing I am very weary of is just how powerful the government has become in people’s day to day lives. I am hoping that after all this is over that the government’s power will retract to how it was, but I am not too sure it will. In my view of things, people in positions of power either try their best to keep the power that they already have or try to expand it. This is fearful because I do not want to live in a society where the government has major control on most civil liberties. Another reason I am fearful is the fact that people would be so willing to give up their freedoms as individuals for a false sense of security. People are so willing these days to just not question what is going on and just believe whatever they see in the news. It has gotten to the point where I feel like I can not speak my mind on certain things without being shut down instantly. I have been having long talks about this idea of trading our civil liberties for false sense of security. I keep saying “false” sense of security because in the real world you can never be truly safe. Security is not a fundamental human right so why would we be so willing to give up the rights that we are entitled to. I hope people will consider things like this in order to come out of this situation stronger. -

The Exotic Influence
We have reached the point where many Americans are receiving their stimulus checks as an economic relief in response to the hardships Covid-19 has brought upon our economy. Many are getting at least $1200 on their checks and many memes are surfacing with different ways to spend the money (none of which are for the checks intended purpose). This, along with the added popularity of Tiger King made for this quality meme. -

America First, Americans Last
I responded to our local hospital's call for donations for PPE and donated 10 N95 construction masks sitting in my garage. The same day I donated those masks I heard media reports of American companies selling millions of masks per day to be shipped abroad. It tells me that capitalism persists in this pandemic and that President Trump prioritizes the profits of some American companies over the safety of our health care workers. This reveals America First as a hypocrisy. Hence, I labeled my piece "America First, Americans Last". -

The Struggle in Rural Communities
The COVID-19 pandemic is undoubtedly scary. We are currently faced with a time in which people are fighting for their lives, we can’t leave our homes, businesses are closed, and our lives have been completely uprooted. There is no doubt that this situation has affected every single person’s day to day life. However, from my personal experience I think that different communities are affected in different ways or perhaps hit slightly harder. Although everyone’s top priority at this time should be safety, I also think it is important to address the strain this pandemic is putting on communities like my own. The first week of March I drove 600 miles from South Carolina to Pennsylvania to go home and visit my family for spring break. Little did I know that I would end up being in Pennsylvania for the foreseeable future. My hometown is the epitome of a rural community. If you are not one of the few small business owners, a farmer, working for a natural gas company, or a factory worker in the next town over then you most likely live in poverty. Therefore, my community was already economically struggling before this pandemic hit. Once it did hit, the small businesses deemed nonessential were shut down, hours of operation for essential businesses have been cut back, and those who were already wondering how they were going to pay their bills now have absolutely no idea how they are going to survive heading into the future. -
