Florida Vacation
My parents felt it was very important for us not to be stuck in the house all summer. In February they made a plan to go to Florida for a few days and they didn’t want to cancel it unless they had to. We left Albuquerque at about 11:15 pm and got to Orlando at 4:00 am. The first day was the longest because we were stuck in the airport for many hours before even the car rental place opened and we hadn’t gotten any sleep the night before. We finally made it to Daytona Beach and we sat on the beach the whole first day until our hotel was open. The next few days we drove around, went to the pier, sat on the beach, played mini-golf, and fed some baby alligators. It was nice to get away from Albuquerque for a little bit but it felt good to be home. -

Noah Norman's Covid-19
Once online school was over, my family (and my grandparents) all took a trip to Florida. While we were there many attractions were closed, but some were still open. Those that were open we went to but we were told to wear masks. After our week or so in Florida we stayed home for the most part and followed the CDC guidelines. After awhile and maybe a month before school my sister, who worked at Mazzios, tested positive for Covid-19. Days later I also had the same symptoms (which all felt like a bad cold). My brother and dad both had a very mild case with just a headache. My mom had id worse than them but better than my sister and I. A good two week quarantine later it was normal life going to church and school and what-not (with masks of course). -

A life of unpredictable moments.
During the time of our spring break in 2020 we were headed to Florida with a bunch of friends and my brother who was in high school but got switched to online 2 days before. During that time the pandemic really took off. While we were there everything got shut down in Florida and in Ohio, nervous about if we were still going to be able to make it back to Ohio. In case of a travel band. We were confused and was kinda upsetting while we did have a pool in our back yard everything was getting shut down, the beaches, parks restaurants and basically the whole state of Ohio back home. The thing that was good to come out of this was my younger brother then a senior in high school was able to last minute come with us because his school went remotely. While we spent that whole weekend in the pool and ate the only restaurant that seemed to be running while everything was closing down. -

Calls for plasma in COVID fight conflict with decades-old restriction on blood donations
The frustration of many within the LGBTQ+ community over blood donations has been especially pronounced in the middle of the pandemic. The FDA recently moved the requirements for gay men to be abstinent from 12 months to 3 months. Activists and others point out that because blood can be screened for HIV, and that the rules are outdated and don't make sense. It is tragic that those who are capable of donating blood in this moment of crisis are unable to do so based on these current regulations. It brings back images of gay men that tried to donate blood after the Pulse nightclub massacre, but were turned away. -

COVID-19 Test Results
In June, the tutoring company I worked for decided to bring us back into the office to work in-person after we'd worked remotely for a few months. About two weeks after starting back, I nearly failed a pre-work temperature check, started having a bad cough, and developed other symptoms of COVID-19. Thankfully this was the last day I had to work in person for a few days. I decided to go to CVS to go get tested for the virus when I hadn't improved the next day. My mom ended up driving me to the CVS. The branch that I went to had drive-thru testing, and I ended up not being able to take my test until 30 minutes after my appointment because of the influx of people getting tested. When it was my turn, the pharmacist handed my mom the test through the dropbox where they usually pass medicine through. The test kit had two disinfectant wipes, a pair of disposable gloves, the swab, a plastic bag with my name on it, and a test tube. The first wipe was for me to disinfect my hands before touching anything else in the bag. Then, I put on the gloves and grabbed the swab. This swab was long and pointy, and when I inserted it into my nose it made me sneeze. Once I finished swabbing both sides of my nostrils, the swab went into the test tube and the test tube went into the plastic bag. I used the final wipe to wipe down the outside of the bag before handing it to my mother to put into this biohazard box the CVS had installed outside. It took a week to get my results back, despite the estimated 3-day timeline. Though my test was negative, it still changed my life for the next months. My grandfather had chronic respiratory problems, and since social distancing was near-impossible in my tutoring job, I took cut hours in order to go back to working remotely. During the Covid-19 quarantine I was living alone with my dog and cat in a 3 bedroom town house after losing two of my roommates to a financial crisis.
during the stay at home order i could not take my dog on our daily walks in the beach. She has a huge personality so she got mad at me and would poop on my carpet in my dressing room. The bissell green machine is important to me because it helped me save a-lot of money of a real carpet cleaner and it helped keep my house sanitary when thats all I had to stay. -

Fudging the Numbers
I don't think that I can ever remember the CDC being a political entity, or one that ever really enjoyed any portion of the national spotlight. Rather than serving as a unifying, unbiased source to prevent the spread of the virus, it has become yet another battlefield in the ongoing culture war surrounding the coronavirus. This item was added TAGS v6.1.9.1. I originally searched under the hashtag #florida. Within that search, I have chosen to add the following tweet since Florida is one of the new virus hotspots. It also speaks towards the inherent doubt present in a significant portion of the population concerning the virus. -

Florida surges to top global hotspot
Florida cases have been surging, and have just passed 200,00. The trajectory of the state is currently on track to be the worst of all US states. Canada, with over 10 million more people, has around half the cases. The state remains mostly open. It seems that a handful of US states have taken over the headlines for worst hotspots. Florida leads these states as the worst of the worst in terms of new cases surging. When comparing Florida to countries with similar or even notably larger populations, the difference is striking. I included this tweet to highlight the reopening vs continued lockdown approaches of Florida and Canada. -

US coronavirus: 'Apocalyptic' surges feared in some cities
While New York City, state, and surrounding areas were hit hardest initially, five months into the pandemic it is Texas, Florida, and California that appear to be the next hardest hit areas. These states also happen to be the most populous in the nation. All three are concerned about the record breaking number of new cases each day and are putting various amounts of legislation into practice to help slow the spread of the virus but they are mainly relying on people using good judgement, which as a resident of central Texas I can tell you has been lacking. Governor Greg Abbott of Texas has rolled back some of the states reopening plans but is mainly telling people to wash their hands, wear a mask, and maintain social distance. -

Calls for Early Release in Florida Jails as COVID-19 Cases Grow
Activists and prison reformers have been calling for inmates that do not pose a public safety risk and have either served most of their sentence, are elderly, or who are at high risk for covid complications due to pre-existing conditions to be released early. Advocates believe this not only helps the prisoners from contracting or even dying from covid but it also protects the larger community. While many jurisdictions/states have released inmates early Florida's governor has thus far refused. -

One year ago, I took part in this same mass at the same church to celebrate my graduation from high school. Sequestration
The intention of my short film “Sequestration” is to serve as an atmospheric piece that reflects the fears of our current reality. I aimed to achieve a sense of uneasiness in this film through the audio and visuals captured in my own neighborhood in South Florida. The unusual emptiness resulting from the circumstances of COVID-19 inspired me to play off of the themes of loneliness and isolation when capturing footage. Despite the dark nature of this film, I really enjoyed making it and it served as a great stress reliever amidst the coronavirus pandemic. I think it is important to take advantage of the therapeutic effects that creating art can offer us in these difficult times. -

COVID-19: The End of Freshman Year
My name is Griffin, and I am currently a freshman at the University of Arizona. The Coronavirus outbreak definitely changed my life. I was on 2020 spring break in California, following the Western Collegiate Roller Hockey League Playoffs, and after a week of playing hockey and going to the beaches in California, I received an email; school was going to be online for the rest of the semester. I went back to campus, packed up my things, and headed home to Prescott, Arizona. I didn’t know what to expect, but I was sad to leave. I was leaving my new friends, my dorm, and my freshman experience behind. I hadn’t lived at home in months, since before the summer, so it was a weird transition. I felt like I was back in high school. As classes transferred to online, it seemed like the workload increased. Maybe it was because I was sleeping more and had less time, or maybe teachers just felt like they needed to increase the rigor. Either way, online classes were hard, but manageable. However, I definitely preferred in person classes. There were many disappointments with the outbreak. My hockey team received a bid to attend the national tournament in Florida, and we were planning our trip, but it was cancelled. I also had summer plans cancelled. I had a three week study abroad trip planned to China, which was canceled for obvious reasons. I also had a few job interviews for summer internships, but all the companies told me they were no longer hiring because of the outbreak. Now, I’m still unsure what I’ll be doing this summer. Luckily, I’ve been safe up in Prescott. My region has been relatively unaffected, with only about 100 cases of Coronavirus reported in my county. It’s one of the few perks of living in a small county. I still don’t know anyone who has been infected, but I hope it stays that way. For now, I’m just trying to stay healthy, and I’m hoping life can get back to normal. I want to be able to return to school, play hockey, and get a job. Hopefully all this can happen. I’m disappointed my freshman year ended so abruptly, but I’m grateful to be healthy. -

Getting on our repatriation flight to London from Marrakech Morocco.
Excited our flight out of Morocco to London was really leaving. We missed video taping the cheers when it landed. The flight was packed and we still did not have an onward flight home, but with London not closing down like Morocco, we knew we would have more options. We did finally make it home to Orlando via JFK and the joy was short lived because the virus crisis in America was clearly not being taken seriously and 9 days after we left Morocco we had Coronavirus. Although we could not get tested for another two weeks because America had no tests. #HST643 Scott________ & wife Tammy ________ -
