  She made this costume herself to go trick-or-treating in the City with classmates. Apparently, they don't think high school is too old for that nowadays. Last year, we didn't let her go out and we didn't hand out candy either. With a sick grandmother in the home who uses oxygen, it was just not a risk we could afford. She came back and said that the trick-or-treating was pretty skimpy. We didn't get many kids at home either... but that might have been because Halloween fell on a Sunday this year.

  Connecting through Climbing in the Pandemic

  Just prior to the pandemic, I got seriously into rock climbing. For me, not only it was a much more fun way to work out, but it is absolutely a social sport. Everyone at the climbing gym was and continues to be extremely friendly, and you can simply strike up a conversation with anyone by simply asking what routes they are working on so that you can help one another find the most efficient way to reach the top. As all the routes are graded, just watching yourself improve and working on harder routes is an amazing feeling. With the outbreak of the pandemic, however, the gym closed until September, and I felt like such an important piece of my life went missing. While it was hard losing an activity and social outlet like that, I like trying to find silver linings in the difficult times. Even though it took me a while to come to this conclusion, I realized that it took the pandemic and losing it to truly appreciate the people there and sport itself. Ironically, I can almost contribute the pandemic to my continued obsession with climbing, even if it did rip it away from me for a few months. Attached is a picture of the first event back at the climbing gym, which was a lights-out event for Halloween where you could only use headlamps to see where you were going.

  The Spread of Corona Virus

  I have a fairly large friend group and around halloween a couple of my friends got corona. So on Halloween there were 3 different parties to split up the friend group, so that it would be safer for corona. At one of the parties there was this girl there and her brother had corona (but she didn't know it at the time). So everyone she was with got it, including her. Then they had to quarantine and stay away from everyone for 3 weeks. I felt really bad for them because it seemed really lonely. I have also gotten tested multiple times and it felt really weird and my nose started running. I am glad that I have these experiences to learn and grow from.

  Halloween At Home

  Halloween is usually a month long celebration at our house. We plan our costumes months in advance. We go to Disneyland at least a dozen times to enjoy the special Halloween treats, decorations, and to wear the insane amount of Disney Halloween shirts we own. On Halloween night, we serve at our church running game booths for the community and come home just in time to trick or treat (and usually get A LOT of candy because we’re some of the last trick or treaters). This year, of course, every single thing listed above was cancelled. With so many disappointments this year, we committed to making Halloween a celebration from morning until night. Making our own backyard carnival, the kids bobbed for apples, carved pumpkins and played Halloween soccer (okay, it was just soccer but we were in costumes!) My daughter was over the moon to have us all dress as Hogwarts students, except for her little brother who dressed as her owl. Lunch included ghost shaped chips, jack-o-lantern quesadillas, grape “eye balls,” and guacamole in a jack-o-lantern pepper. To make dinner extra special, we brought out the fondue set we registered for when we got married over 15 years ago and never opened. The kids loved a dinner of dipping into cheese and chocolate. The one thing my son repeated all of October was he wanted to “trick or treat to all the doors in the house.” Undaunted, we turned off most of the lights, put a bowl of candy inside every door in the house, and put either an adult or a dressed up stuffed animal (there’s only three adults here and way more doors) at each door. The kids were genuinely excited to trick or treat and actually knocked at every single door, and gleefully filled their bags with candy. It’s easy to focus on all that has been lost this year, but this simple, stress free, at home Halloween may have ended up their favorite one ever.

  My parents run trick-or-treating at our door. In usual years, they have a large tub of candy and the rule is you can have as much candy as you can grab with one hand. It has been pretty successful in the past, but was impossible this year. What they decided to do was go to Home Depot and construct a chute where they would send bags of candy to people from 6 feet away. Less people came, but the ones who did were impressed.

  Corona Virus

  In the beginning of February I was living a really good life. I got to see friends all the time, dance with my friends, and just was learning a lot in school and life was good. Little did I know in one snap life could have changed so much. I get home from school March 12, 2020 and heard the news that School was closing for 2 weeks. I really did need the break from school and thought of it as a "long spring break". But soon it turned into more weeks than months. I hated online School at first, long zooms then right when they are done I got to work on my thousands of assignments due that day. No motivation to dance or do anything. I would lay down on my phone and procrastinate all school assignments. Finally, summer hits and some Covid laws were lifted. I got to see a few friends and go surfing everyday. This was what I loved during summer. I even got motivated to dance again. My dance studio then opened and I was off of zoom. I loved getting to dance in person again. Summer soon ended and back to the online school life. This school year has been really good because I adapted to the online education, and started to not procrastinate. Sadly, my studio got back online but it was okay with me. This thanksgiving and halloween were so weird because we had no family over and it was just not the same experience. In conclusion, this pandemic has been rough but I have learned a lot and grew in many different ways.

  This is a pamphlet that my town had posted around while nearing Halloween, one of the biggest national holidays that inspire people to be outside and gather on the streets. The pamphlet is a fun way to get people informed about the current status of the pandemic and ways people can partake in Halloween without having to worry too much about the pandemic. Providing people with the knowledge of what to do to if they are interested in trick-or-treating, welcoming trick-or-treaters, or trying to stay safe and prevent them from coming to their homes. Due to rising rates in COVID-19 again, it is most important to be mindful of the pandemic and your fellow neighbors. Since a lot of people are usually on the streets for Halloween and kids would be running around, it is important to stay safe and the pamphlet is a quick, easy, and accessible for people to stay knowledgeable. Luckily, the pamphlet is perfect to hang up around town or for people to have on their fridges as a reminder of what to do.

  My Halloween as a Dinosaur

  I refused to let Covid-19 ruin my favorite day of the year—Halloween. It only took a little extra work to ensure I could enjoy it safely with my friends and neighbors. First, I went on Amazon and found an inflatable dinosaur costume which covered my entire body and face. Next, I prepackaged all the Halloween candy into little baggies while wearing a mask and gloves. I set up a six foot table in my front yard where I set out a few treats at a time. The evening started off slow with only a handful of trick-or-treaters stopping by before heading out to local socially distanced Halloween events. However, when the sun went down more trick-or-treaters emerged. From adults to small children, everyone was masked up. During a normal Halloween in my neighborhood, multiple families would pile into one car and cruise the neighborhood together. This time the groups were much smaller. The kids were younger too. Many parents didn’t want their little ones to miss out on the festivities. Overall, Halloween turned out much better than I expected this year. My costume provided much needed laughter at work, and my neighbors enjoyed taking pictures of their kids with a giant blue dinosaur.

  Trick-or-Treating During the COVID-19 Pandemic

  For this year's Halloween, my mother wanted to hand out candy in a safe, fun way for the trick or treaters to enjoy. She found a way to maintain the appropriate 6-foot distance by utilizing a long PVC pipe as a chute to send the candy shooting down to the trick-or-treaters below on our front porch steps. This picture exemplifies the measures people have done to maintain normality amidst this devastating crisis and I believe it captures the common effort to minimize the risk of spreading COVID-19 while still engaging in fun activities.

  Everyone in Chicago LOVES to go all out with the halloween decorations, but this year it was a little different. Along with the classic ghosts in the window and giant cob webs, there were giant contraptions that were built to pass out candy to those who trick-or-treated, in a social distanced manner.   Costume Designing During a Pandemic

  My friend, Erin, had never really tried to make a costume before; however, during quarantine she found herself with a lot of time on her hands. This is just the first costume that she has made, constructed out of fabric. She has also made a Red Riding Hood costume, a casual dress, and is working on her first jacket. I chose to add this picture because of the uniqueness of the hobby. Not many twenty-year-olds that I know are making costumes from hand. And the only reason that she started to make it was because of the free time she found herself with. This was her new Covid-hobby, her new way to cope and distract herself from what was happening in the world. While she doesn't have anywhere to wear it out, I am glad to be able to document it in this picture.

  No Hocus Pocus Door to Door

  The Mayor of Columbus, MS, Robert Smith, and his office issued a public notice on October 22, 2020 that there should be no door to door trick or treating. In place of door to door trick or treating the city and fellow organizers have planned events for trick or treating throughout the city. This action is helpful and thoughtful for all citizens involved. It allows the citizens to remain safe in their homes if they so wish or it gives citizens the opportunity to celebrate Halloween during the pandemic. Of course social distancing will be practiced for all Halloween events. This is important for children to celebrate a fun holiday while practicing social distancing. Also important to realize the safety and health conditions for others that are at high risk for Covid 19.

I thought this was a hilarious way to showcase how COVID has affected every aspect of our lives. I love seeing the humor during this time when we need it most.
