Coronavirus, Climate Change, and the Environment
In this article, Dr. Aaron Bernstein, Director of Harvard Chan C-CHANGE, answers questions about how climate change and COVID-19 are related. He discusses the problems that animal agriculture causes for both the environment and human health. Hopefully, more people will hear the words of a world-renowned scientist and make the change to veganism like I did 4 years ago. -

COVID-19: A Barometer for Social Justice in New York City
From the article: A recent study by researchers at Harvard University found that mortality ratios for Black and Latinx communities in the United States were 3.6 and 2.6 times higher, respectively, than the mortality ratio for non-Hispanic Whites,1 a stark gap also reported in New York City (NYC).2 Other similar patterns have been found in NYC over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic. Mortality rates for the Latinx and Black populations are 242 per 100 000 and 226 per 100 000, respectively, both more than twice those for White and Asian American residents.3 Surveys conducted by the City University of New York (CUNY) Graduate School of Public Health & Health Policy and others tell an even more alarming story. The gaps in mortality rates are just the tip of an iceberg of long-standing public health–related inequities among people of color in the United States. These discrepancies threaten all US citizens—wealthy and poor alike—and they have been exacerbated by the coronavirus. -

Harvard announces all classes online for entire school year
Harvard just announced that all their courses will be online for the upcoming school year due to pandemic. This includes all undergrad and graduate courses. Harvard becomes one of the first universities to announce they will be fully online for the year. Other universities may follow suit soon. I found this to be important because Harvard may be the first of many institutions to announce they are going fully online for the year, or at least the fall. I was surprised to see they went online for the entire year, as spring semester is still a long time away. As more universities go this route, a new fold is added to how covid has affected life and history. Unlike any other class before, many students will now have the unique and unknown experience of online higher education from traditionally in person schools. -

HMSC Connects! Earth Day
Webpage created by the Harvard Museums of Science and Culture to educate and inform the public about vital environmental issues on Earth Day. This resource emphasizes the difference between 2020's socially distanced Earth Day, and how the holiday has normally been seen as a time for people to celebrate their natural environment and continue protecting it. The webpage includes resources for activities as well as lesson plans produced by the Harvard Museums, Harvard University, and other organizations in the Greater Boston area. Resources like this highlight how museums and other cultural institutions sought to continue using public holidays as opportunities to educate, even as they were no longer able to host physical events in their own spaces. https://hmsc.harvard.edu/earth-day -
