Pandemic ER Nurse
This is my daughter who works in a downtown Chicago hospital in the ER. I am her mother submitting this, and I gave her my artist mask to protect herself from Covid. This was at the beginning when there was a lack of PPE.This picture is important to me because she is a second you’re nursing individual and she has worked very hard in the pandemic like all the other nurses and doctors. -

Chicago Restaurant Workers Take Extra Covid-19 Precautions
Food workers and restaurants are a part of our communities. They rely on customers from the community and often live in the communities they serve. Making sure that customers are safe is a huge part of the job and as these Chicago food workers showed, they will not wait for mandates to put safety measures in place to protect workers and customers alike. Submitted by Stephanie Berry, curatorial intern for Arizona State University, HST 580. -

A different way to experience restaurant dining
During this pandemic, the food industry has had to drastically modify its usual operation to stay in business but also ensure they are practicing proper social distancing. Chef Grant Achatz's exclusive molecular gastronomy restaurant Alinea thrives on the in-person dining experience. Rather than closing up shop, he's sharing a little taste of what Alinea is all about by creating to-go meals. Photograph was taken in my mom's kitchen in the suburbs of Chicago -

Living Through a Pandemic
It never occurred to me that a virus starting in Wuhan, China could create a significant impact in other countries far away. Nevertheless, here I am sitting in isolation, or as our government calls it "social distancing." Myself, and all the other college students have had to convert to online learning. Which has not been that bad, but there are some times where I have missed a class or two to gain more snooze time. Online school has made me realize how much I miss being in the physical classroom. The aspect of repetition every week kept my mental health stable. I as well as many others have also had to deal with heading back home to our parents. Just as I caught a glimpse of independence, I'm back under my mother's rule of "my house my rules." My mom works for DCFS (child protective services) and is considered an essential worker. She as well as many other essential workers are commonly face to face with the virus on the daily. Specifically, my mom has to evaluate houses in Aurora and Elgin, Illinois, where the virus is hitting Kane County the hardest. It's scary to know that someone in my family can be easily exposed to the virus. But I understand that she has to do her job and keep children safe, especially during a pandemic where she has told me, "people become crazier when they're stuck in their houses." In the first month of being back home, many arguments were had with my 22-year-old brother and mom, so I decided to move to my dad's house and have been here ever since. Many other families have experienced the same problems with communication and alone time as it is hard when you're stuck with one another for 24/7. -

World's Fastest Hotdog Sits Idle in La Grange Park
One of the Midwest-famous Wienermobiles, owned and operated by the Oscar Mayer company, has sat idle on a residential street in La Grange Park, Illinois for nearly two weeks. Possibly parked near an Oscar Mayer employee’s place of shelter, the stagnant truck, like many other closed businesses in the Chicagoland area and around the country, has become a symbol of the hard-hitting economic recession that followed soon after the initial outbreak of COVID19. #DePaulHST391 -

Windy City Records’ Curbside Pickup
In the midst of this shelter in place, many businesses are struggling to survive. Stores that rely on small, niche markets are especially impacted. The new record store in Downers Grove, Illinois is no different. After opening their doors just under a year ago, Windy City Records has relied on a dedicated, but small customer base. This notice that curbside pickup is available is just one attempt at survival. Posted during the Illinois Shelter In Place Order#DePaulHST391 -

Celebrate Holy Week and Easter With Us On-line
As Easter Sunday approaches, President Trump’s prediction about crowds of people returning to mass is proving unrealistic. Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Libertyville, IL is one example of many Catholic Churches offering online mass as a substitute for in-person services. While religious services have been streamed before, and “Church TV” has existed for a long time, never have Church services across the world had to be cancelled to such a large degree and replaced by online streaming.#DePaulHST391 -

Goodbye Basketball
Since the COVID-19 pandemic many businesses and housing facilities have closed common areas to promote social distancing. Since March many residents have not followed through with the warnings and now landlords and managers have taken measures to keep people from gathering such as at One North Apartments, a University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign student housing facility where they have taken the hoops off the basketball rims #DePaulHST391. -

Social Distancing at Walgreens in Chicago’s Southwest Suburbs
Although many businesses have closed their doors due to COVID-19, pharmacies have kept theirs open. Essential workers, like pharmacists, store leadership, pharmacy technicians, and customer service representatives, have continued to work for their communities despite the potential risks to their health. As a part-time pharmacy technician, it is difficult to social distance while at work, as my job relies on interacting with my coworkers and numerous patients throughout the day. This sign serves to remind its viewer that even small errands during a global pandemic, such as picking up medications, may present a preventable health threat to all parties involved. *Walgreens Corporate; notice distributed to individual stores *04/08/2020; Posted in the pharmacy queue during Illinois’ Shelter in Place #DePaulHST391 -

"This Will Pass"
It has been a common occurrence to see messages in windows, streets, and porches in the neighborhoods of Chicago. Social distancing has instilled barriers into people’s lives and these messages are a sign from others that they are with you, while we all experience the effects of COVID-19. Some of these messages are uplifting while others can be relatively nihilistic. Either way it can be seen as an expression of the anxieties that stem from this plague—there are plenty of unknowns, but messages like “this will pass” is a nice reminder that community is still present in these trying times.#DePaulHST391 -

The Library is Closed Today
This photograph was taken of a Libertyville, IL, public library, which is closed due to the pandemic. Across America, non-essential services such as libraries have had to shut down. The nature of the sign reflects the uncertainty of this quarantine period. By simply reading "The Library is Closed Today," this sign says little about how long it will be closed, instead directing patrons to the library website where information can be updated as circumstances change and new information is made available. #DePaulHST391 -

First voice-over power point for first day of now online US history of medicine class.
First PowerPoint of 55 min recorded lecture. First time I’ve ever added voice over to PowerPoint images I usually show in class. Usually I see my students, I ask them questions and interact with them. I use the blackboard to underline points as well. They break into groups to discuss primary sources. It took 10 hours today, Sunday, to learn this new skill and translate my lecture into a new format: new images, voice recorded for each one. Most poignant is the first one in which I am saying hello, talking about the weird situation we are all in, telling them that i miss them, and that they should not worry. The goal is for them to learn as best they can under weird conditions but this class should not add to their stress. They need to take care of their own health and their families. The image represents what every professor in the country was asked to do over spring break—in the flurry of stress, shopping for possible 2-week quarantine, thinking about Home-schooling and absorbing conflicting information. And an election in Illinois and other states. We do as best we can because we care about our students. But the dozens of messages from the administration are unhelpful. This icommand from above for instantaneous online education represents hard work. We will all do the best we can. -
