Boosted
This is an Instagram post by sfhippy. This post is a selfie of someone who just got boosted with pfizer. Pfizer is one of the vaccines approved for boosters. The user used #safe, which I am going to guess that they believe the vaccine will make them safer than before. -

The Elephant in the Room
This is an Instagram post by resistance_awakening_5d. This user posted a picture in reference to the "elephant in the room" regarding vaccines. This being that the unvaccinated are not dying. The user added tags like #pureblood, which means someone that has not gotten the vaccine, and is therefore "pure." Other tags include #depopulationagenda, which references the idea that the vaccines are meant to depopulate the world. #clotshot refers to the user believing the vaccines cause blood clots. These are just a few meanings of the tags used by the author of this post. -

Brainwashing
This is an Instagram post by we_stand_together_uk. The post shows a comic of a man and his brain full of different narratives, with the man looking fearful. Quite a few of the narratives depicted are COVID related, such as: "masks work", "trust the science", and "get boosted now." The poster themselves in the tags says #saynotothevaccine and #wewillnotcomply, making me believe that they think that everyone that has taken the vaccine has been brainwashed in some way to accept it, when they believe it is dangerous. -

The Globalist Vaccine Agenda
This is an Instagram post by epochtimes. The Epoch Times is a news organization. According to this post, it says that the vaccine passports are ways to limit freedom from government leaders. From my own experience with these arguments, a lot of it is not based on the vaccines themselves, but the fear of less rights to movement and more government spying. The vaccine passports would just be a way for the government to exert more control over the populace, using vaccines and public health as a facade to that. When I was searching for items to add, I used the #vaccine to find this. Noticeably, I had to click past a few things to even look under this hashtag, and it didn't allow me to see past a few posts, as Instagram has blocked from view many of the search results that come from this hashtag in particular. This was one of the few posts Instagram allowed me to see. -

Global Shortages
This is an Instagram post by leventerkan. This user brings up the problems with shortages of raw materials as a result of the pandemic. Due to these shortages, prices of items have also been rising, leading to more inflation. At the end, it talks about how the war between Russia and Ukraine is making the supply chain issues even worse, as it is freezing up some industry, which could delay any return to normal conditions. -

Weak Sauce
This is an Instagram post by chrischuckry and it is a political comic on the incompetence on part of the Canadian government and the handling of the pandemic. Obby Khan, who is referenced in this post, is a Pakistani-Canadian politician. This user is accusing him of using the same excuses as Heather Stefanson, who is the premier of Manitoba, a Canadian province. The political comic is upset about politicians in Manitoba "not listening to experts" and allowing the pandemic to become more dangerous. -

Mask Pollution
This is an Instagram post by discarded_face_masks_uk. This is an account that shows people that have left their face masks on the ground, thus making it worse for the environment. Hashtags like #coveryourface do imply that they still want you to wear a mask, but are against people accidentally leaving them on the ground. This helps speak of a larger issue where with mask mandates in places in some areas, it leaves more opportunity for people to litter with their face masks, as people will take them off at times when doing certain tasks or if they think they don't need one in some specific area. -

This Instagram post from the ministry of Peru lets people know that they need to head to a vaccination center to receive their 3rd dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. 2021 Census - HIST30060
The 2021 Census fell on August 10th, during the 6th lockdown. This Mark Knight comic published in the Herald Sun on August 12th is a comedic take on the questions Victorians were truly thinking about. I thought the QR code with Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews was particularly clever, as the use of QR codes to scan into everywhere we visit has become a quintessential part of our everyday routines. The questions themselves are funny, with the Aussie slang ‘yeh, nah’ being the options for each one. Asking things such as if you have been out of your trackies or house that day are clever questions, because they reflect a universal experience that almost all Victorians could relate to in one way or another. -

Covid Tests for the Alpine Resorts - HIST30060
This comic drawn by Mark Knight, is a satirical cartoon commenting on Victoria’s requirements to obtain a negative Covid test result prior to entering the Alpine Regions, as the mountains prepared to welcome guests back to their slopes. I came across this cartoon the day it was posted in the Herald Sun, as I was packing my bags to leave for Mount Hotham early the next morning. When entering the resort and prior to driving up the mountain, there was staff in Fluro vests checking everyone had an SMS indicating their negative test result. I found it interesting that this short, 10 second process was the only one in place to keep the Alpine Regions safe from Covid. On the mountain, there was a testing site which never seemed to have any visitors, as well as Covid marshals in Hotham Central (the main building) checking to make sure everyone was wearing a mask, or face covering at all time. Due to the nature of the resort, it felt as if Covid was a thing of the past, with hospitality open, dance floors, retail shops and no social distancing on chair lifts or in accommodation. -

Empower: Ecuador - Canceled (Personal Experience)
I was part of the group of student that was preparing themselves emotionally, spiritually, and physically to go to Ecuador and be present with a community in Guayaquil. During this class and for the entire semester we were in retreats together, reading, journaling, and sharing our hearts with each other. We built a community and were deeply connected with the mission of the program and the desire to go to Ecuador and meet the neighbors. However, exactly a couple of days before traveling the lockdown happened, and the plans were canceled. We did not know that the world was going to change so suddenly and immediately. I clearly remember the meeting we had to announce that the trip was canceled and how most of us were filled with sadness and crying. Afterward, we kept being in connection to Ecuador with our prayers and writings. We even wrote some letters to our neighbors in Ecuador. So, this story is to reflects how we can be in connection and engagement with others even during times of depression and distance and how in specific this program had to adapt through COVID-19. To express the story I chose the screenshot of an Instagram post from the Community Engagement Office at St. Mary's University. -

Distance Learning Craziness

Keeping Concerts Alive
The pandemic forfeited any chance of attending that concert or planned music festival. Although online meetings weren't anyone's favorite, the switch from in-person concerts to Instagram and Facebook live concerts was a success. These quarantine concerts were able to keep the public entertained in their homes while keeping the spirit of live music alive. -

Instagram Community
This collage of Instagram screenshots displays a common practice at the beginning of the pandemic that was used to stay in contact with friends and family during challenging times. When the pandemic first began, these Instagram stories were a respite from the loneliness of lockdown. Shown in these images are posts that encourage inclusion, individuality, and cooperation. An example of these posts is the orange drawing post. In this type of post, someone tags other people on their drawing and those people draw their own oranges. The chain gets preserved so that the viewers can see all of the people who also took part in the process. It was a way to connect people and produce a creative outlet. The other posts are ones in which a person answers questions about their favorite Disney characters and shares what song they are listening to. You then tag a few people to do the “challenge” next. This was a way to stay in touch with people, but also a way to show that you were thinking of someone. During the pandemic, it was very easy to feel alone and secluded. When a friend from college whom I haven’t spoken to for a while tagged me, I felt that someone cared. I was on someone’s mind even during a time of so much fear and sadness. The idea of each individual tagging multiple people also meant that the number of people participating grew exponentially and, ideally, it made us all feel connected. -

Meme about the Pandemic in Austria
I saw this meme in January 2021. It was created by an Austrian online news platform called "k.at" and was posted on their Instagram channel. The first picture on the left shows a hamster who is hoarding (or rather "hamstering") toilet paper. This showcases a phenomenon which occurred in Austria as well as in Germany: some people bought as much toilet paper as they could in the beginning of the pandemic out of fear of a lockdown (also other things as e.g. noodles, rice etc.). The result was that most people couldn't buy any toilet paper because it was sold out at most places and the manufacturers of toilet paper couldn't keep up with the production. It was kind of absurd. The second picture on the right also shows a hamster who seems to have a great time skiing. This should represent the third Austrian lockdown. At this time (around January 2021) many Austrian tourists went skiing even though the numbers of Corona cases were rising. It was quite a controversy at the time because a lot of other activities (like social gatherings) were regulated by the state for health precautions, but the skiing resorts weren't affected (and the Corona cases were also rising in these places). A little sidenote: The Coronavirus allegedly came to Germany in 2020 because of German tourists who came back from said Austrian ski travels... -

Dr. Rick Barr said parents have been shocked because the messaging has been that kids don't really get sick with Covid-19 - but now child hospitalizations have become more common." -

"Disinformation Dozen"
This article discusses "misleading claims and outright lies about COVID-19 vaccines that proliferate on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter". According to the article, 12 people are behind the majority of the misinformation surrounding COVID and the vaccine that leads to conspiracy theories. Many of these theories have led some social media users to avoid the vaccine and ignore scientific facts. It is scary to think that such a small group of people are in control of so much of what we see on social media. What this small group shares and communicates to users are so widespread... I can't open a social media app without seeing some sort of conspiracy theory about COVID or the vaccine. We are so close to overcoming the pandemic, but this type of misinformation is holding us back. -

Forgot my vaccine card to my second appointment
I forgot my vaccine card to my second Moderna dose appointment at ASU. It's silly of me to forget about something so major. They asked if I had a photo of it and I thought they wanted it to prove I had received one. I did have a photo but I had covered the information on it for a picture for my story on instagram. They just waived me along and gave me my second dose anyway, they came to me about 5 minutes after my shot with a new vaccine card. Now I have two different vaccine cards, maybe one will be my future "travel id". -

Trans Day of Visibility, Alberta
This is a post from a popular Instagram page, mrfactsalberta on Trans Day of Visibility on March 31st, 2021. This message of solidarity and love towards Trans Albertans, stating that together we have the potential to challenge the discrimination in our province, which is known as one of the most socially conservative provinces in Canada which has a dark history of oppression and discrimination towards members of the LGBTQ+ community. The description of the post reads, “We all know the truth. This province is notorious for keeping Trans People on the fringes of society. But it’s important that we work to make it better and easier to live here because nobody should feel like an outsider in their own province.” Albertans must be able to call out discrimination towards Transgender people on a daily basis, this day alone represents the urgent need for Alberta to work together to defend Albertans against bigotry and discrimination, to protect Trans people and Trans rights for now and forever. The call to work however is more than just a call to visibility; it is a call for liberation. -

#JOTPYSilver from Kiki
I learned that despite numerous journalists and politicians bemoaning the deep damage quarantine is doing to elementary aged kids, my two kids are thriving. They love having time to roller blade, bike, play legos, build forts, run around the yard, have both parents home to join in the fun, and end the night by watching an after dinner movie or tv show together (currently, the og Muppet Show) - all things our crammed with activities pre-pandemic life didn’t regularly allow for. I guess I learned a slower pace of life isn’t necessarily a bad thing -

Racial Equity Gaps
When we think about racial equity gaps in higher education it typically centers on how BIPOC students face much lower odds of earning a college degree. This is definitely true, but those who do make it to graduation also face inequities in college and in the job market post-degree.⠀ ⠀ A study of 2016 BIPOC college graduates found Black and Latinx students experience the longest time to completion, borrow significantly more than other students, and receive the lowest pay after graduation. This means Black and Latinx graduates spend less time earning wages and are more likely to have higher debt when graduating. It took me five years to earn my degree, while I also worked a full time job to pay tuition. The racial wealth gap we have doesn't just occur while employed but long before it.
