Kehilat Kolenu Online Services - Jewish Melbourne
During the lockdowns and COVID restrictions in Melbourne, Jewish communities found ways to connect. Especially important are the Friday evening services for Shabbat. Kehilat Kolenu, a Humanistic Jewish organisation held zoom meetings in place of their usual Kabbalat Shabbat services. Especially during the loneliest, most isolating periods in my lockdown experience, these zoom meetings where I could hear the songs of my culture helped me feel spiritually and socially reconnected. Jewish Melbourne: Temple Beth Israel's 'Yachad'
Temple Beth Israel created a website - Yachad - in order to bring community together during Covid times. The website hosts livestreams and recordings of services, as well as reflections, opportunities to hear the shofar, music, share recipes, order a machzor, and offer a blessing. There's messages from the rabbis, information about the High Holy Days services, and activities for children. They explain: "In many ways Covid-19 has taught us that community matters now more than ever! We are proud to launch this digital platform which will host our High Holy Day offerings for you and your family. Yachad, (“together”) in Hebrew, draws its name and purpose from “Shir La’Ahava”, a song by Israeli band Gaya. The lyrics of Shir La’Ahava which begin with the words yachad – lev el lev, (“together – heart to heart”), capture the optimism, love and unity which we hope will define our High Holy Day celebration this year." -

Next Time in Person
An illustration of a piece of matzah, with the words "next year in person" inscribed on it. The Passover Seder traditionally ends with an expression of hope to celebrate "next year in Jerusalem," a hope related to aspirations for the ancient Jewish homeland, and for peace. This year, separated by stay-at-home practices, we simply hope to celebrate "next year in person." -

Coronavirus, Mikveh, and Taharat Hamishpacha
My partner shared an email with me from the Rabbi of a synagogue we're affiliated with, which addressed questions he'd received from congregants about how to deal with family purity laws under the current physical distancing restrictions. The email recommended reviewing the advice on this website, which provides guidelines for Jewish women performing ritual immersion at a mikveh (ritual bath) for the purposes of family purity, and for mikveh attendants, during the coronavirus outbreak. The advice was developed by Jewish women who are revered as experts in this aspect of religious law.
