Wendy Vorpahl is from Gillett, Wisconsin which is a small town near Green Bay. She has four boys: Matthew, Mark, Aaron, and Adam who all fall on the Autism Spectrum with Mark and Aaron having classic/severe Autism. In this interview, Wendy talks about the impact the pandemic had on her small business and the small business around her, her family’s experience with all getting Covid at the end of 2020, as well as her thoughts and feelings about the vaccine and the handling of the pandemic. Matthew and Aaron also come into the conversation at a few points as Matthew answers some questions and Aaron can be seen and heard in the background. -

Shawn Berg was born in Milwaukee Wisconsin, and raised in La Crosse Wisconsin. Recently he moved to Altoona Wisconsin to begin his job as a service manager at Texas Roadhouse in Eau Claire. In this interview, Shawn discusses how COVID – 19 has affected his life personally along with how it has effected the local Texas Roadhouse regarding their employees as well as their guests that come in. Not only does he discuss the consequences for the employees, but he also talks about how the guests have reacted to the mask mandate and how the restaurant has handled it all. -

Dear COVID, You tried to break us. You were rampant. You were brutal. You did not discriminate. You were careless. You hit NYC hard, and didn’t stop. You stormed through our diverse neighborhoods. Our middle class and hard working people. Our less-fortunate. Our most vulnerable. Our elderly and incapable. We became the epicenter at one point, and it didn’t stop there. You halted our way of life. You shut down our small businesses. Our restaurants. Our bars. Our necessities and invaluable operations. Our transportation systems. You divided families and friends. You caused us to feel lonely and scared. Worried. You put people out of work. You ruined lives. You murdered many. But, we’re still here. And we aren’t going anywhere. We fought back. We’re still fighting back. You haven’t gone anywhere, but we’ve learned to live with you. For now. We have regained some aspects of our way of life. We continue to support each other in times of need. We support our small businesses and give back to our communities. We are finding ways to comfort each other and be with one another again. We are being smart. We are being considerate to others and continue to do so. You may still be very present in our everyday lives, but not for long. We will come back from this, stronger than ever. Thank you for showing us what we are made of. Sternly, NYC COVID has been tough on us in the States, more particularly in NYC. This virus is ruining many lives and is still very present. NYC has been affected in many ways, and still continues to be. This has something our city has never had to experience. Unfortunately, the process has been very slow. However, with vaccinations, and herd immunity, we shall get through this and bring back our city with a bang. My family and I have been very fortunate thus far and I always try my best to find ways to give back and support local businesses and families that have been hit hard. I believe everyone should do this to the best of their ability in a time like this. Through all this, we as a city is still standing strong and our will is not broken. The photo attached is a small glimpse of ways we are getting by while also be weary of our actions. You can see a couple enjoying their time at a restaurant, while in the reflection, a stranger wearing a mask and being mindful of other’s health. -

2020-02-18Green Mill Once Again, in Winter
An image of this bar front was shared on this archive almost a year ago, on March 31, 2020, at the beginning of the pandemic: https://covid-19archive.org/s/archive/item/11917. On February 10, 2021, I passed by this bar on my way home from an errand and remembered it being shared on this archive. It looks different now, so I wanted to document it. Aside from the weather depicting a more solemn image, the next noticeable difference is in the fact that in this posting, the bar's front window is boarded up, with a most likely spray-painted tag in green ink. The boarding up is most likely a remnant from 2020's late spring/early summer protests that took place around the country in response to racial violence, which was kickstarted by the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis, MN. In addition, Green Mill also has posted a flyer in the circular window of their front door. In March 2020, the pandemic was still so new that many didn't know what to do besides close their doors for the time being. Now, in 2021, with more understanding of COVID-19's severity, many businesses have some sort of signage indicating that they are closed and encouraging readers to follow the social distancing guidelines set forth by local, state, and/or federal governments. This is most likely the sign posted in window. Hopefully, in another year's time, we'll get to see Green Mill open and lively with the sounds of jazz music, the coronavirus pandemic only a memory of the recent past. -

With the rise of COVID infections, local stores and restaurants became cautious with their employees to flatten the curve while continuing to operate. Il Mundos pizzeria, on Huntington Avenue near Brigham Circle in Roxbury, is one of the small businesses that could not afford to stay closed or only deliver during a spike in COVID cases. Local businesses that once were so memorable to the neighborhood are forced to adapt to be safer in 2020. As places began opening back up, plexiglass barriers became commonplace in restaurants big and small, and with the addition of a ‘remember to social distance’ sign, this is the common image of what ordering food in 2020 looks like. A lot of places, like Il Mundos, do not allow customers to eat inside of the restaurant, but still allow people to grab-and-go with their food. This is the ‘new normal’ of going anywhere to get food. Some places are a bit different but everywhere has made accommodations for everyone’s safety. -

This is an image of storefront posters designed by West Roxbury Main Streets. In recent years, there has been a push for shopping at local businesses to stimulate local economy. At first glance that’s exactly what these look like until you get to the third one. As per local and state ordinances, masks are required to be worn in public. With the holidays around the corner retail services will be in high demand and operating businesses safely is on most people’s radar. Last year if I said, “oops I forgot my mask,” that would not mean anything, and people would probably think I was crazy. Now that’s just the way life is and to shop you are required to wear a mask. Now, not everyone does this and not every business will enforce this, but some will. The #lovelocalsafely will hopefully be used so all those posts can be looked at in the future, but it also shows how much local businesses care about the customer. -

2020-11Red Curry Tofu Rice Bowl at Bon Banh Mi in Charleston, SC
Bon Banh Mi is a small local restaurant with two locations in the Charleston, SC area owned by two friends. Like many other restaurants in the area, they were hit by Covid-19 and had to figure out how to continue service in order to stay open. They just recently started offering inside service, however most people sit outside to enjoy their food. Masks are required at all times, except when eating food. -

This news article is about the San Antonio Shiran family business during COVID-19. In July 2020, the family tested positive and the husband/father, Harvey, was in the ICU for the month. This forced the wife/mother, Lindsey, to take over the family business. I also attached another news article about a Bexar County grant program for bars and restaurants affected by COVID-19. -
2020-05-02Merchandise in Quarantine
In Cambridge, MA, we depend on small businesses, whether they’re corner stores, beauty parlors, restaurants, or specialized outlets. This picture is the lattermost, a music store called Cheapo Records, which I visited often before quarantine. Places like this are extremely important for both conserving history and discovering new music (without algorithms). COVID-19 has only exacerbated the danger Cheapo and others are facing due to rising rents. This picture I took before they reopened spoke to me because it shows how the hiatus wasn’t expected to be this long; the merchandise is left outside, behind an iron curtain, in uncertain indefinance. -
2020-07-21Local Businesses Still Need Support
The slogan "Stay Strong, Wichita" proved quite common during the city's lockdown in March and April, but became less so following Kansas's quick reopening. By July of 2020, Wichita, Sedgwick County, and the state itself grappled with rapidly rising COVID case numbers, prompting many public health officials to emphasize more emphatically their case to slow and roll back Kansas's reopening. Amidst rising illness, divided state and local government, economic pain and uncertainty, and trepidation at reopening Kansas schools in the coming weeks, this local west Wichita car wash exhorts citizens to support local businesses and to "Stay Strong, ICT." Note: "ICT" are the call letters for Wichita's Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport (and its predecessor, Mid-Continent) and is a common term of endearment used by Wichitans in reference to their city. -
2020-03-27Luna Loca Offers Take-Out During California's Shelter-In-Place Orders
Following Contra Costa County's shelter-in-place orders, local restaurants began offering take-out and delivery options to keep their businesses alive. Many believed this would be the solution to a short term problem only to quickly realize this would be the new reality for months. Danville residents were quick to support local businesses by purchasing gift cards and ordering take-out and delivery. This screenshot shows a photograph of the Mexican food restaurant, Luna Loca. Luna Loca has been in business in Danville, California for 40 years. It is difficult to see a local institution that is typically bustling with customers so quiet. Hopefully their efforts, combined with community support, will allow them to weather the storm of the COVID-19 pandemic. -

Clorox is a company based in the San Francisco Bay Area. I have a close friend that works for Clorox and they shared this interview with me. The interview captures the realities that COVID-19 is having on Clorox and its employees. The interview highlights the experience of Larry Wheeler, a senior packaging operator who has worked for the company for 29 years. Clorox employees are playing an essential role in stopping the spread of COVID-19. Wheeler's dedication and commitment to working as hard as possible for the common good is commendable. -

05/14/2020Conflict between Business and Social Distancing: Mayor's intervention blocks plan to open Bank Street to pedestrians
News article relaying that, after initial local support, city council and the mayor vetoed a plan to close some lanes of Bank Street, a major road, to traffic, to allow those walking on the sidewalk, especially when crossing the Bank Street Bridge over the Rideau Canal. would be able to maintain a 2 meter distance from one another. Local businesses were concerned with the reduction in traffic and roadside parking spaces this would cause, further reducing their business in an already difficult time. 05/11/2020COVID-19 Small Business Impact: Annie's Breakfast & Steaks
The pandemic has had a severe impact on businesses everywhere, but especially small, local ones with not a lot of financial stability. In some cases, these businesses have had to shut their doors for good, not able to sustain the lack of revenue. In my hometown of Orangevale, the place pictured has been serving the community for over 40 years. Despite much popularity over the years, Annie’s Breakfast & Steaks had to close for good recently. Since I worked as a busser here for over two years, this closure affects me personally. In addition to working there, I’ve been going to breakfast there since I was four years old. I also know all the waitresses, cooks, bussers, and managers that worked with me. It is tough to see a place that was a hallmark of my hometown close down. I feel that this photo exemplifies the true reality of economic hardship that is being seen all across the country. As this pandemic goes on, we must understand what the long term economic, psychological, and social effects will be. For every day the lockdowns continue across the country, the future of our society becomes more uncertain. We must stay vigilant, healthy, and safe, but we must also find ways to get back to a sense of normalcy so that businesses like Annie’s don’t suffer a similar fate. -
