Woman angry she was asked to leave ER after refusing to wear a mask
A tweet, which has gone "viral" in which a woman films an encounter she had with the triage nurse at St. Joseph's Hospital in Toronto where she says she went after suspecting she had broken a finger. As the staff in the video repeatedly tell her, Ministry of Health policy states everyone in hospital must wear a mask, and a hospital may refuse treatment to a patient who refuses to comply. The staff also repeatedly informs the woman filming in a health care centre is not permitted, under law, due to concerns for the privacy of other patients. While many are very angry with this individual, and government and the hospital have roundly condemned her behaviour, others in the comment section for this tweet agree with her and defend her. -

An Ode to Medical Professionals (And Masks)
I have friends and family members that work in medicine. Although we joke about them getting coronavirus, there always is a small fear in the pit of my stomach when they go to work. This tweet, like many other collages in times of tragedy, takes the photos of deceased medical workers and forms them into collage to pay homage to the sacrifice that many have made. This item was added TAGS v6.1.9.1. I originally searched under the hashtag #wearadamnmask. Within that search, I have chosen to add the following tweet because it showcases the sacrifices that have been made in the medical field during the pandemic. It also attempts to show the gratitude that many people have for their medical professionals. -

Frontline Heroes
When the community quarantine kicked in, our outdoor media partner, HDI Admix, had a problem. They had all these massive LEDs as part of their inventory, but there's no one to see them with everyone staying home. What we did was reinvent a mass media touchpoint and turn it into a highly targeted one. We used the massive LEDs as a platform to share a message of strength to the only ones who'll be able to see the LEDs, the frontliners. We reimagined them as modern day superheroes fighting the battle against this pandemic. And these short videos aired in over 20 LED sites in Metro Manila for the remainder of ECQ, aside from being shared on social media. -

Daycare declines to take Ottawa nurse's son over other parents' COVID-19 fears
News story about a nurse's struggle to find daycare for her young son. Her son's previous daycare closed, perhaps permanently, he is far down the waiting list for emergency daycare for the children of frontline workers, and then a spot she did find him fell through when the parents of other children in the daycare, two of whom had weak immune systems and asked the carer not to take the child on as they feared he would carry covid19 to daycare from his mother's work at a hospital. She has not been able to work due to the unavailability of care, during a time when nurses are in high demand. However, the article also mentions that after a story on the situation was aired on the nightly television news, the nurse received numerous calls offering to watch the child for her. -

A Kiss Across the Glass
The girl in the photo called Ying Cheng, Five other colleagues from her hospital received an emergency notification from the hospital: the negative pressure ward will be activated at any time! After receiving the notice, she didn't have much time to explain to her family one by one, and she immediately returned to the hospital to prepare to enter the front line "battlefield". Since then, Ying Cheng has stayed in the negative pressure ward every day, guarding the diagnosed patients against a distance. In front of the infection building of the Fourth Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine, her boyfriend met across the glass. This is the first time they have met in 11 days. Through Chinese Social Media -- 5
I’m a study-abroad student. Due to the virus, I had to stay at my home in New York. I got the update of the virus through Chinese social media, and I think it is really interesting. I’m going to share some posts from Chinese social media about the virus. The post is about that one of the temporary hospitals is going to close, which means the hope is coming. Through the post, I feel the persistence of those front line fighters. There are plenty of touching stories in the post. One of them brings his daughter's doll to the front line. They are also others' wives, husbands, mothers, children. These medical staff came to the frontline at the risk of infection, and their families were also worried, proud, and worried about them from afar. -

I’m going to share some posts from Chinese social media about the virus. The post shares the current situation in the front lines. The photos in the post are so touching. Disease, urgency, risk, and death are the themes of twelve hours. People in the front line were trapped behind masks and face masks, breathing hard, causing them to feel severe headaches. Even though, they are still insisting on caring all the patients. -

The Danger of Being Essential
Everyone in the entire world has been affected in one way or another by the pandemic of COVID-19. The rapid spread and contagiousness of the virus has made the spread of the virus virtually impossible to contain, because of this, the virus has gone worldwide in a matter of months and has caused many casualties. My mother is a nurse working on the frontlines, and every day I am afraid for her. My family faces the constant fear of exposure. To protect the rest of the family, my mother has been quarantining herself on one side of the house and has been very careful about keeping clean and using disinfectants. I know that the work my mom does has taken a toll on her mental health lately. She seems more discouraged and less motivated than usual. Part of this is likely her isolation from her family, however, I think that working on the frontlines right now can be very stressful and I know that is it typical to lose faith in modern medicine at a time like this. My mother has mentioned how sad it is to see people on their deathbed, when there is nothing you can do to save them. She told me one of her patients was an elderly man who had no family except for his wife, and he could not contact her, and she could not visit him during his last hours of life. This made me realize how terrifying it can be to have the coronavirus. While I was discussing the virus with my mother, she told me about the supply shortages that many hospitals are experiencing at the moment. The main issue is with ventilators. Many coronavirus patients need to be put on a ventilator to facilitate their recovery, but without these machines, there are many more casualties. There is also a shortage in Tylenol and medical masks. Tylenol is used as a pyretic to reduce fever in patients and reduce pain from the symptoms. Medical masks are needed most in hospital settings because the healthcare providers need to be protected the most. Everyday Healthcare workers put their lives on the line by going to work and treating coronavirus patients, and every day they are helping to improve the statistics of the coronavirus pandemic. I worry for my mother every time she goes to work and pray that she stays safe and healthy despite the factors not in her favor. -

Journal of the Plague Year entry 4- Logan Bellos
Connecticut (where I'm from) has been one of the top states with most Coronavirus cases, however I think we are starting to see the bright side of the tunnel. My mom is a hospital nurse and although her hospital hasn't gotten the most cases, it is still not a place you want to be. However, she's told me that less and less people are coming in with the coronavirus which to me, shows that social distancing is really working for us and it is great to see people doing what they should be. Let's hope we can keep it up. -

Nurse During the COVID-19 Pandemic
This picture is a picture of my mother who is currently a nurse and has been in the medical field for over thirty years. She has continued to serve her patients during the pandemic, despite the fact that she has a compromised immune system and is taking an enormous risk by continuing to serve. Her exposure to sick and ailing patients is a constant worry for my family, but we understand why she takes the risk and why she remains so dedicated to her work. On this particular day, I had messaged her to ask how things were going and she sent me this picture because they had finally received masks and gloves, which were extremely hard to find, even as healthcare providers. Here’s hoping to wider availability of the PPE that so many doctors and nurses rely on as their only line of defense against this devastating virus. -

Nurse discusses the hospital response to the mask shortage
Nurses/ health care providers are given 1 mask per shift to use for the entire 12 hours (sometimes 1 per pt and other hospitals 1 masks for their entire patient load). After we use the mask we place it in out brown bag to reuse- it is being done all across the country. It’s crazy really for healthcare providers to wrap their heads around- we never re-use ppe because of risk of contaminating yourself. But we have no choice. You do it like this now to make your supplies last. *Annie R. (NP) and Jillian Decker #HIST521 -
