Stephanie Oral History, 2020/07/17
Stephanie [REDACTED] lives in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and works part time for the Hershey Chocolate Company. She lives with both her mother and brother. At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Stephanie requested to work from home due to underlying health reasons. Stephanie is not working from home but is struggling with the set up. Stephanie is also craving a sense of community during these stressful times, especially since Pennsylvania isn’t friendly to those not from the area. Stephanie and her family have taken the proper precautions to stay safe and are only leaving the house when absolutely necessary. -

Covid Class of 2020: Campus Philly's Virtual Yearbook for College Grads
The Class of 2020 didn't get the pomp and circumstance they deserve, but that didn't stop them from celebrating. Campus Philly wanted to take that celebration one step further by recognizing graduates from colleges and universities in the Philadelphia region with a Class of 2020 prize pack. We asked students to submit an anecdote about what they are most proud of following their undergraduate career, along with their graduation photos. We heard from 83 students, and created Philly’s first ever virtual yearbook to recognize the hard work they put in over the last four years. We sent students a variety of prizes, including gift cards, laundry bags, Red Bulls, and gift certificates for a celebratory dinner. One lucky winner even got a shout out from Philadelphia Eagles player Boston Scott! Campus Philly is so glad to have played a small role in making the Class of 2020's graduation a memorable experience. -

Pennsylvania's Halt on Extracurriculars
When the coronavirus first started, online learning seemed like it could be fun in the interim. Working from home, avoiding a commute, and dressing less informal all were wonderful treats the first two weeks; as the quarantine and education questions stretched on, these same treats are now driving educators insane. In Pennsylvania, these concerns over reopening have led to voluntary halts on some of the most important social aspects of high school: sports and extracurriculars. This item was added TAGS v6.1.9.1. I originally searched under the hashtag #schools. Within that search, I have chosen to add the following tweet because is reflective of a general mood of uncertainty that is present around almost all aspects related to schools reopening. Popular Carlisle restaurant opens up for eat-in diners against state COVID-19 orders
A lot of restaurants in the central PA area are following the guidelines of Gov. Wolf, but not all. Restaurants like Fay's are opening with dine-in seating before their county is moved into the green phase. Despite health concerns waiters and regular customers are eager to return. Many see going out to restaurants as an act of freedom and living by their own terms. Submitted by Stephanie Berry, curatorial intern for Arizona State University, HST 580. #ASU #HST580 -

Restaurants prepare to open decks, patios but warn "it's not going to make us money"
As more areas of PA open up after being locked down for the last ten weeks, restaurants are having to weigh the advantage of reopening. Restaurants in Central PA are not known for their outdoor patios and decks. Between the humid hot summers and the plentiful bugs, not many people eat outside here. With regulations restricting many restaurants to outdoor sitting only restaurants are having to consider new ways of serving the public. When it comes to food and beverages in PA the coronavirus has had a huge influence on pushing business owners to rethink their traditional business models. To-go cocktails and mixed drinks are legal in PA
I'm not a PA native, so the blue laws of PA have always seemed very strict to me. When Governor Wolf signed a bill allowing Pennsylvanians to pick-up cocktails and mixed drinks, I was a bit shocked. The ability to purchase beer and wine in the grocery store has only been legal in PA for a few years, and liquor stores still close on Sundays. The coronavirus pandemic has pushed PA to adapt their alcohol laws faster than I thought possible. It's still too soon to see if this new relaxation on alcohol laws will remain or if PA will tighten them up again once the pandemic ends. Be Smart Stay 6 Feet Apart
This sign in Frick Park, which is a local park near my house, reminds people to stay 6 feet apart from each other. It can be easy to forget this rule, especially in a park where we have always tended to assume that we have lots of space, but these signs are located every dozen or so meters to remind people. There is a big surge in the need to go outside to exercise or just to be in nature, but in these times, we have to be smart about how we go about it. \ -

Theatres closing tonight - last set 5pm
This is an email sent by the President of the small, locally-owned movie theater I work at telling us that the theater will close down due to state-wide mandates that non-essential businesses close. It also suggests signing up for unemployment insurance, and what may happen once we are allowed to re-open. -

Uplifting Chalk Messages
This image shows uplifting messages written by children and adults in my hometown. It captures the feeling of my PA suburb currently; because kids are out of schools, most parents are working from home, and all social gatherings are cancelled, many families are spending time together outside. Some written messages we saw include "Keep going everything will come to you at the perfect time!" "Have an online Netflix party!" "Wash your hands!" and "We will get through this together!" -
