  Revisiting the family archives - HIST30060

  In isolation, I found myself coming closer to my family. I was living in Melbourne at the time, away from my home in Tasmania, but maintained constant connection via video calling and messaging my family. One way I connected with home was by sharing old photos with my sister. This is one she sent me while I was in lockdown. It was taken around 2008. Trawling through thousands of old photos was an easy way to keep occupied during lockdowns, and I’m partially glad that COVID gave me the free time to do so as it was a fun way to bond with family and massage out the homesickness.

  Kenmore Square, May 2020

  Photo taken in Kenmore Square in the afternoon on Tuesday, May 12, 2020. Kenmore is usually one of the busier areas of Boston, especially in the spring, given its proximity to Fenway Park. On this afternoon the sidewalks and streets were empty, aside from a few pedestrians in masks. The Citgo sign, a Boston landmark, can be seen in the background.

This specific essay highlights the photographic series Rifts on Real Time, created by Leslie Hewitt. The essay itself reflects on the concept of time during of time during the pandemic, and the large amounts of time people have spent inside. In relating the thesis of the art to a common experience for some during the pandemic, the essay highlights how museums are relating their collections to the experiences of living in 2020.
