The First Jab
HIST30060: This is an image of when I was waiting to leave the Royal Exhibition Building following my first vaccination. The experience was not something I was unfamiliar with, throughout high school I received regular vaccinations, the only downside this time was there not being a bowl of lollies to reward myself with as there was during high school. I had been anticipating the worst of symptoms after what I had heard from others, but fortunately all I really got was a stiff arm. This was also amidst the beginnings of the anti-vax movement and protests that we unfortunately are so accustomed to at this point. -

The ring of Steel
This photo shows a newspaper article published during Melbourne's 2021 lockdown. Following significant anti-lockdown protests in the CBD, the police enacted a 'ring of steel' around the CBD to prevent further protests. I was actually turned around at one of the checkpoints (unaware that the city had been shut) earlier that morning on my morning run. This was one of the most dystopian moments from the whole pandemic and highlighted the lengths the government was willing to take to stop the protests in Melbourne. -

Protester, Rioteer
I drew this to show how spotlighted and how dramatic the BLM protests were, not out of want, but out of the need to bring attention to this issue. In the photo, the subject is shying away from the spotlight, not because they will be hurt in the same way as others, but because having a singular, white face as the flag would undermine the entire thing, and the subject knows that. They are wearing a mask, both to obscure their face and let them be known as part of the protests and not just an innocent bystander; and also to show how harmful covid was and that they are protecting others in different ways. -

Portland Protests During COVID-19
The videos that I am sharing are from the Portland Protests. I feel compelled to share them because protests at this scale are unprecedented in their diversity, longevity, and turnout, and may represent a social tipping-point precipitated by the dual economic and health crises imposed by COVID-19. Before COVID-19, I had planned to spend Spring Break visiting friends in Portland, Oregon. Midway through the break, my university moved classes online and I had the opportunity to stay in Portland for 5 months. On May 25th, the murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis police sparked national protests against systemic racism and police brutality. The Portland protests were especially large and active, which garnered significant media coverage and led to deployment of federal agents to the city. In the midst of a pandemic, when so many healthcare workers found themselves without adequate PPE, police departments across the country were armed with seemingly limitless munitions and riot gear. Tear gas, pepper spray, sonic weaponry, batons, and riot shields were used against demonstrators, whose defenses were composed of homemade shields, leaf blowers, traffic cones, and water bottles. Yet he crowd still showed up at the Justice Center every night, and many are still there after nearly 4 months. These protests are unprecedented, and have caused many Americans to adopt radical stances against racist and unaccountable policing, and we would be remiss not to document them as part of the Plague Year. -

Political Activism in the Midst of a Pandemic: BLM March Columbus Circle
A Black Lives Matter Protest is disbanded early due to the city curfew. I left this particular protest at 7pm to get home by 8pm but many people chose to stay. The NYPD started mass arresting groups of people who were out protesting after curfew. -

Political Activism in the Midst of a Pandemic: Empty City Street After Curfew
This was taken while I was staying in Manhattan for the protests. I went outside at around 11pm to walk my dog but since De Blasio made the curfew 8pm, it had already been three hours past curfew. I had never seen my city so empty at 11pm; it was shocking. There were NYPD officers standing on every corner monitoring the streets to make sure no one was out. If I hadn’t felt trapped inside before because of quarantine and COVID, I definitely felt trapped now. -

Political Activism in the Midst of a Pandemic: Curfew is Moved to 8pm
On June 2nd, Mayor De Blasio changed the already established curfew from 11pm-5am to 8pm-5am. This was a very historical moment in New York, as there has never been any curfew enforced on the city in my lifetime and 8pm seemed very early. I worried for essential workers and anyone who had to rely on public transportation to get home for work, as they were arresting people who were out after 8pm if they did not have a valid excuse or explanation. Does COVID only spread in bars or also in massive riots?
This meme makes fun of the fact that people gathered in huge crowds during the Coronavirus pandemic. This person is portrayed at wondering if COVID only spreads in bars and restaurants or also in massive protests? Because apparently protests are allowed, but bars are closed. The "asking for a friend" part is funny. -

Conflict emerges between protests and public health
As large scale BLM protests have taken place all across the world, the morality of protesting during a global pandemic has often come up. I chose this tweet to submit to the archive because it highlights one of the more extreme reactions to protests during a pandemic in that this user is accusing the protestors of endangering the publics health. However, this is only one side of the argument as many argue fighting for justice takes priority. The fact that this is about protests in Australia also provides an important international and specifically non US element as the overall attitude towards social distancing and government enforcement of health guidelines differs greatly in the US than it does in other nations. -

A Tale of Two Pandemics
Declaring that being "pro-Black is not anti-White" while memorializing the names of African-Americans who have fallen victim to police brutality and racism, this homemade protest poster in a west Wichita, Kansas, neighborhood reflects the civil unrest roiling the country amidst the omnipresent COVID-19 pandemic. On June 2, just three days before this image was taken, a BLM protest organized less than a mile from this neighborhood as part of a wave of demonstrations involving thousands of citizens that rolled across Wichita. Many demonstrators wore masks as a precaution against the COVID-19 virus, but many more did not, despite Kansas's slow but steady increase in COVID cases. Large gatherings, such as the racial justice protests that have spread across the USA and the world, have unnerved public health officials, who fear that a lack of social distancing and proper protective measures will only exacerbate an already insidious disease's ruthless transmission. -

Serious Problems
During Covid-19, everyone is so stressed. Many people lost their jobs. It is a really frustrating time for many people. A more exasperating thing happened. A black man George Floyd died in Minneapolis, Minnesota because of excessive police enforcement. A white police officer had his knee on George's neck for over 10 minutes even if George completely followed his instructions and didn't do anything to resist. Everyone was very angry because of this unfair treatment. The protesters started a peaceful march in some cities. However, the conflict between the police and protestor becomes more serious. Some protestors express their anger by robbing the shop and destroying their cities because society contract doesn't consider them. They want the government to make changes through the fighting. The riots seeking justice and Covid-19 became the most serious problem in the US. -

The Impact on Normal People
This is a screenshot from a video which uploaded by a well-known blogger who lives in downtown, Los Angeles. He was interviewing an innocent woman on the street about the current protests and activities in LA. The woman said she's scared and worried abut her child. I think I feel her. My mother's worrying about me everyday even though I live pretty far away from the violence. And I feel scared as well. I can hear the helicopter flying above the cities everyday but I still don't want to go out of my apartment. -

Thoughts
It's currently June 2nd, 2020. I'm sitting in my room at 2:47am thinking about how the world is slowly falling apart. I didn't know that Friday would be my last day in school, my last day in those hallways rushing up the stairs to Chemistry for the final period of the day. I didn't think it would be the last time I spoke to my friends and teachers face to face. Every day is a new problem, right now there are protests all over the world following the black lives matter movement. Cops are out of control, abusing their power and killing innocent people. Stores and homes are being looted and burned down. I've been watching the news and our "president" has ordered the military to open fire if they start looting. It would seem the world is falling apart as I sit at home. The pandemic may have helped our environment but it shows that our kind is ruthless. They can't stay at home and have to protest the virus. I sometimes wonder what they think they are doing, you can't protest a virus. Stay home, you are the reason the cases keep going up. The racism and abuse of power taken on by the cops who are meant to protect us has got out of control and everything is being publicized. I wish it would stop. It's important that I got this off my mind because our children and grandchildren are going to learn about this. It's important they know how terrible our president was during this time and how stupid people can be. They should know that millions violated the stay at home order and caused our cases to rise. They should know that while everyone was at home, police were outside giving masks to WHITE people in Central Park while beating up minorities in lower income area because they didn't have a mask or weren't social distancing. They should know how terrible America really is. -
