  Covid-19 Through the eyes of a young adult industry worker

  I remember the days leading up to lock down, one of my professors was warning us that if need be we would effortlessly be able to transition the remaining weeks of class online. To my peers and I, we thought that was a little extreme to talk to us about going remote, we didn't think something that was happening in another continent would reach us so quickly. Fast forward a week or two, work was so slow we were ordering food and sitting around talking for the entirety of our shift. At the time I was a host and was getting paid hourly so I didn't mind but I didn't think about the way it was affecting our bartenders and servers. Within the next two days we were shutdown and I was filing for unemployment. Interestingly enough, that time was the most money I've ever made in my life. I was collecting 2-3x more money than I would have gotten if I was working. I changed my life style, I started nannying once August of 2022 came around because I couldn't afford to only have my hourly host pay once things started to open back up again. I was eventually given a promotion at work to Bartend once my nanny family no longer needed me since they were comfortable with the kids going back to school and day care. I was making a livable wage but it was nothing compared to what sales were before covid. It was never consistent, when the numbers began to spike people, reasonably so, would stay home and money was tight. I was so unhappy at my current job I was despiertly seeking a new one but in January of 2022, it was still a little scary, numbers were spiking and finding a new industry job seemed next to impossible. I found one but it came with a lot of consequences. I struggled financially for months. If it wasn't for the support of my family, I wasn't sure if I would have been able to make rent, pay my car, or even feed myself. Thankfully as the months have gone on it's gotten better. It's now June of 2022; over two years since the pandemic first started, and while nothing is normal, it's the closest it's ever been. Those who were once in the same position as me, scared of how they were going to survive are back to making livable wages. But I won't lie, I'm still scared, there is no certainty or promise that things will stay as "normal" as they are this 2022 summer. All we can do is hope and pray, and be thankful and grateful we're here to talk about it.

  The Covid Pandemic as a Senior in Highschool

  The website that I am linking describes what happened to students all over the world in March of 2020 when all students in schools and universities had to go on lockdown and switch abruptly to complete online learning. This is an important covid-19 related topic to me because I was a senior in high school during that time, and I really struggled with my mental health, academic achievements, responsibilities, body image, and just overall my whole life. This article isn't as personal as it could get, but it gives a good historical and general idea of what student experience during the pandemic was like.

  Walking at Bear Hole with Dad

  I took this photograph with my dad when we went for a walk one day at Bear Hole, the reservoir in my town. Since the pandemic started, my dad and I would go for walks with each other, exploring new places and talking about life. My dad had recently gotten laid off, and I had made the decision in early October to study remotely instead of on campus, so we both had some extra time on our hands. We had our set of usual places that we would go to walk, but the pandemic allowed us to venture to some new spots. Even though we knew Bear Hole was so close by, neither one of us had gone to explore it much. We would plan our walks around my class and work schedule, being sure that we made time for each other a few times a week. Although making the decision to study remotely was a difficult decision because I was a senior and would be away from my friends and professors, I got to spend time with my dad in a way that we were never able to before.

  The Signal of Approaching Silence

  On Friday, March 20, 2020, I was grocery shopping at Hy-Vee in Canton, Illinois when my mobile phone pinged with an alert from a local news app: the Illinois governor had officially issued a stay-at-home order to prevent the spread of Covid-19. Rumors of the impending order had been circulating for the past few days. I teach English at Canton High School, and we were scheduled to start a week of Spring Break that Friday. That morning the principal had cautioned us to take home our computers and any teaching materials that we might need, just in case we did not return to school after Break. So, the text message confirmed a stark reality. Talk of the stay-at-home order overtook the conversations of shoppers around me. People were speculating about what would come next, now that schools and businesses would be closed. I remember passing the meat counter where I overheard the department manager taking a phone call from a gentleman who wanted to place an apocalypse-sized order of beef. This is it, I thought to myself, trying to figure out what kind of groceries to buy that would sustain my family over for an indefinite period of time, because even though the stay-at-home order was for just two weeks, I had a sinking suspicion we were not going to best Covid-19 in two weeks’ time. I began pushing my cart up and down the aisles faster, a little more frantically, in response to a burgeoning awareness that the virus could already be circulating within our community. Looking back now, I see that we were somewhat cocooned in Fulton County, Illinois, a mostly rural county. The health department announced the first positive case on April 10; the first death occurred on October 21. The virus was slow to take a foothold, but eventually it did. In late July, our school district’s board unanimously voted to start the school year fully remote. Each school day, teachers reported to ghost-town school buildings and holed up in their empty classrooms, with admonitions from administrators not to co-mingle with each other. During that time, I dutifully logged onto Google Meets for each class period, where various avatars greeted me because students were not required to turn on their cameras, so none did. Sometimes I got to hear tinny student voices, which sounded a lot further away than across town, and I wondered if each voice matched the person I pictured in my mind’s eye. I had never met the majority of my students in person, and the photographs on our school’s student management system had not been updated since the fall of 2019. I remember the frustration I struggled to keep capped when I would call on students and be met with silence. Were they even sitting by the computer? Were they afraid to say something in front of their classmates, lest they look stupid? Were they just willfully ignoring me? Were they okay, physically and mentally? I pulled more words out of students through written assignments and chat boxes than through Google Meets. Although part of the student body returned to in-person school in January of 2021 while the rest remained remote by choice (we taught both groups concurrently), it was still difficult to get students to speak, even to each other. Sadly, many of our students had become so accustomed to the idea of school as a radio broadcast—one from which they could easily disengage if they so wished—that they no longer felt it necessary to contribute their voices. In Illinois, we’ve been told that all students will return to in-person learning in the fall of 2021, with few exceptions, but I fear the virus has done irrevocable damage to our students’ speech.

  Where Are All the Kids?

  Our school has never looked better - festive flags waving, campus clean and painted, welcoming balloon arches. We were ready to re-open. But then, no one came. The message we teachers had been whispering amongst ourselves for weeks, that kids and their families do not want to come back yet, had come to fruition. Out of my 172 students, only 31 will step foot on campus, the rest will continue to logon from home. That number, 31, is expected to continue to drop as more students revert to only Distance Learning. Knowing how few students were on campus, I was surprised to see our school social media posted first day pictures. I know it was supposed to be celebratory, but I couldn’t stop laughing at the insanity of a balloon arch welcoming no one. How could our social media exclaim that we were “so happy to see students roam the halls again” and then post pictures of a completely empty school? It looks like Chernobyl. At some point, I decided to take the images, a video of an empty classroom my friend took, and my attendance roster with almost all kids marked as “Distance Learning” and put them together in a video to try and capture the mixed emotions. I alternatively feel like crying and laughing when I watch it. I really think it captures the reopening, albeit in a slightly subversive way. Of course, I really hope my admin never sees it, because I’m guessing they will not see the tongue and cheek, ironic humor in this.

  Resilient Child, Resilient Mom- Reflection on 2020

  The first picture was taken April 29, 2020. Remote schooling was not going to end, we thought it would only last a couple of weeks. My child was falling apart, I was falling apart. The second picture was taken about seven months later, November 27, 2020. I had been furloughed, school opened up and then went remote again, we learned how to wear masks, we learned how to social distance. We joined the family bubble, in Illinois. I reflect in January 2021 and I want to note that we are figuring it out together. We continue to teach each other. The second picture is my favorite picture of 2020 that I took. I think this picture speaks to the attitude we are putting forward together. This is a picture of my daughter with her cousin, this picture gives me hope and energy.

  Homeschool Lesson: Substraction with Cuisenaire rods

  When first grade started virtually, I knew in 1 day that I’d have to homeschool my daughter. And while I know it’s the right thing to do for her, everyday I’m learning a little bit more about how to teach her. I started with the easy stuff, and even moved her schedule to Wed-Sun because I work full time and have to cook and clean and take care of a 2 year old, so sometimes it feels like there’s not enough time nor energy to get everything done. It’s not hard for me to get the literature curriculum up and running, but I’m lost when it comes how to teach math. I mean, I understand how it works, but I have no idea how to teach it effectively to a first grader who hasn’t done it before. I bought Cuisenaire rods in March thinking that I’d figure out how to use them over the summer. I didn’t figure it out. But, thankfully YouTube has some great videos that explain how to use and work with them. Yesterday we worked on addition, and today we started subtraction and it wasn’t hard or frustrating, it all felt kind of natural. So for the first time I’m feeling a lot better about teaching her until in-person classes start back up.

  The New Normal

  I uploaded pictures as to how the COVI19 has impacted my everyday life. The first picture shows me working out of my room because we are all working from home now and this is the quietest place in my home. I basically do everything from my room now, sleep, work and eat, it really doesn’t feel like my sanctuary anymore. The second picture is with me and my children around the kitchen table. I feel like I am losing my sanity because I now play many different roles such as: teacher, employee, student and mother. It is hard for me to hold everything together nowadays but there is no other option. This is the new normal and we are trying to get better acquainted to it. I included a picture of my children waving to their great grandmother from our truck. In the beginning of COVID19 my children were not able to see their great grandmother because no one knew who may have the virus. We had to quarantine ourselves for about a month before my children were able to see their great grandmother. Me and my children are more appreciative of my grandmother now. We really did not pay attention to how much she meant to us until we weren't able to see her whenever we wanted to. The COVID19 pandemic has taught me to appreciate the things that I hold close to me like my family, friends, health and my job. I am very fortunate that no one near me has been infected with the virus and we are all healthy. I am very fortunate that I am able to work from home, still have my job and a roof over my head. My family is getting used to the new normal and everyday it does get easier. I just hope I still have my hair and my sanity by the end of this pandemic.

  Remote Learning Co-Op Sign-Ups

  In response to California's decision to require schools to begin the school year with remote learning, and to only allow schools to reopen if they have been off of the state "watch list" for 14 consecutive days, local San Ramon Valley Unified School District parents are forming co-op groups. These groups are designed to allow small cohorts of students to learn together during the remote learning phase. California's decision to require remote learning is due to a recent spike in COVID-19 cases across the state.

  New Desks!

  Our local school district announced that we will begin the 2020-2021 school year with remote learning for all students. When schools shut down at the end of the last school year, we made due with what we had because we believed it to be a short term situation. Knowing that we are heading into a new school year and we are still remote warrants some major workflow changes in our household. My husband will be working from home. I am returning to teaching as my maternity leave has come to an end. And 2 of my kids will be going to school remotely. In order to make it work, we will all need our own workspaces. Target to the rescue! The morning after the district's remote learning plans were announced, I ordered desks for the kids. I sure hope this keeps us all sane and on track this school year!

  Teacher: ‘Parents need to go to work’ does not stop covid-19 at the school entrance

  Many have been questioning how schools will reopen in the fall following closures for most of the nation's schools in March. While there was hope that COVID would settle down, it seems to be doing the opposite, and while we inch closer and closer to August, the month when most schools start their fall term, the question remains; How will K-12 schools reopen safely? While many parents, guardians, and even doctors (The American Academy of Pediatrics) are pushing for students to return fully to campus this fall, citing just how necessary in-person teaching is. Teachers get it; we know we need to see our students to give them the best education possible. But, that doesn't stop COVID at the doors of the school.

  Dear the upcoming future, Ever since COVID 19 hit, the world changed. From banning gatherings to social distancing, extended holidays and many people losing their lives to it every day, the world has descended into chaos. This virus started in December the 31st 2019 in Wu Han, China. They identified that the people were being infected by a new virus and they had no way to treat them, suddenly in January 11th China reported its first death. From then on, more and more cases started popping up in various countries and soon spread to Australia, as a twelve-year-old, seeing a deadly pandemic appear in my time was frightening. Schools began closing and soon the government was in panic. Students in high schools started adapting to a new way of learning called Remote Learning. Since it was my first year in high school, I haven’t adapted quite well, so it was difficult to me as we had to do large amounts of homework at home. COVID 19 had not just affected children but adults as well. Many people couldn’t work as their job involved them being there physically, this affected the economy in many countries and caused debt in many families. Though this wasn’t the only problems that occurred, another problem was that during this time protests started, involving Black Lives Matter and Pride Month. As the Coronavirus is easily passed, protests were a problem, many new cases were started because of people arriving overseas. During this time, scientists from around the world have been creating vaccines, but in 2020 the possibility of a vaccine being created is unlikely. I hope that by the time you read this a vaccine would be created.

  For complete context, I am a white 8th grader at an exceptional private school who lives in the bay area and is very privileged. Today I will be talking about hat quarantine has been like for me. At the start, I was happy at thought of maybe a few weeks off school because of some flu but then it became serious and school was canceled for the entire year. as the days went on I started a routine. online school from 9 to 2 (with lunch in between of course) then exercise outside for an hour (pretty much just walked my dog most of the time), then play video games for most of the remaining day. video games were the only way I made contact for most of the quarantine with my friends. my favorite games to play during quarantine was 2k and COD but mostly COD. Anyways that has been my life for the last few months and it has not been half bad. Besides the fact I couldn't go out or see any of my friend's quarantine was kinda nice. But after a while, people started getting tired of quarantine and started to see their friends again. It started with most girls who were craving social interaction and then eventually after a few weeks spread to the boys. another thing about quarantine was I was on my phone a lot. I averaged around 7 hours a day of screen time which included binging of Netflix shows, viewing of plenty TikTok, and sending lots of snaps. Some shows I have watched over qaurantine are tiger king, money hiest, community, all american, space force, etc.. also, another thing if this matters to you are my political beliefs. I am liberal and I think trump is an awful president and person (excuse my language). Anyways quarantine hasn't been too exciting and it has been kinda boring. also, the protest in the name of George Floyd and I do not support the violent protests but I truly believe In the cause that they are supporting and I think we shouldn't have to live in a racist world. If I am being honest I would actually like to go to a protest but my parent probably won't let me because its "dangerous" or something along those lines. Anyway, that has been my take on my quarantine and I hope whoever you are that is reading this that you are living in a better world with a better government right now.   Wondery's the daily smile Podcast, "Best Teacher Ever"

  An uplifting podcast, the daily smile, distinctly chooses to bring joy to others during the COVID-19 pandemic. The May 28, 2020 episode is entitled "Best Teacher Ever." As the title, suggests, the podcast profiles how an exceptional educator has adapted to the new reality of teaching during a pandemic. Amidst the constant criticisms, demands, and pressures placed upon teachers today, the podcast refreshingly celebrates how teachers are adapting in this environment to do what they always do best, support, love and nurture our children. The podcast also highlights how teachers are not shying away from the challenges presented by COVID-19 but are instead leaning into them and finding ways to connect with their students in new and interesting ways. From creating pre-recorded lessons to conducting weekly video check-ins with each student, teachers are doing their best to support students academically, socially and emotionally. At one point in the podcast, the profiled teacher tells a story from her childhood. Despite adequately preparing for a test, she failed her. Her teacher asked her "Did you put your best effort forward?" When she responded "Yes" her teacher told her "That's all that really matters." Perhaps, as a society, we need to see more of the good in what our teachers are doing during this difficult time. They are clearly putting their best efforts forward, and all of themselves into their roles as educators, for the benefit of our children.

  Wondery's Fighting Coronavirus Podcast, "Taking Care of Our Kids"

  Episode 5 of Wondery's Fighting Coronavirus podcast, entitled "Taking Care of Our Kids," tackles the problems facing today's youth as a direct result of school shutdowns under nationwide shelter-in-place orders. Interestingly, of the major concerns surrounding children during this pandemic, learning does not enter the top 3. Instead, experts are more concerned with food security, student safety, and the long term social and emotional impact of the overall pandemic experience. The podcast also discuss the potential structural changes to America's education system as a result of the uncertain future of the pandemic and shift to remote learning. The conversation around remote learning is sure to continue as educational systems determine how best to proceed in the coming months. There are many calls throughout the country to reopen schools in the pre-pandemic format. This podcast suggests a complete different reality.

  Junior Year-Piece of Cake

  With rising cases of corona virus around the world, school began to shut down and students shifted their learning to at home. Junior year was suppose to be the hardest year of high school, but instead it turned out to be the easiest school year. Even with 4 AP classes, the workload was significantly less. And for the first 2 weeks of online learning, I remember feeling blessed as most of teachers did not assign any work. Homework used to take me 2-3 hours, but now less than an hour. Some days I don't even do homework since my teachers give us multiple days for one assignment. The class that gave a lot of work was though was APUSH. With online schooling, I also got to sleep in more and play games and watch TV/netflix. I barely stepped outside the house too. AP testing was also cut down to 45 minutes instead of the usual 2-3 hours. Although there were many pros to online schooling, there were also cons. As days went by, it just felt redundant and most of all boring. Some days I wish I was actually at school. I haven't seen my friends in month and it gets tiring to just stay at home. Sadly, grades for second semester is pass and fail so although I have As in my AP classes, it won't count towards my GPA.

  Claiming Their Space: Black Student Activism at the University of Maryland

  Graduate students curated this digital exhibit in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. We originally intended to have a physical exhibition about black student activism in the 1960s that would be up for one to two semesters. Instead, the campus pivoted to remote learning and our exhibition did as well. We practiced digital museum curation and added two elements about the pandemic. Now visitors can read about how pandemics affects research process and archive accessibility. *Dr. Quint Gregory

  Notes From an Essential Worker

  The COVID-19 virus disrupts life, particularly our relationships with those we love. But, relationships are flexible and adapt to circumstance. My brother's economics professor has not posted his final grade, yet. Remote learning creates many opportunities for students to violate the academic integrity policies of their schools, and my brother's class was no exception. Due to several perceived violations on the final exam, his professor delayed the posting of all final grades. In other words, although he did not cheat, he had to sweat it out with everyone else. My mother knew he was worried and wanted to leave him with some encouragement in the morning, so she left this note on his laptop before she left for work. We don't see her in the morning anymore, but my mom is always there for us. #FordhamUniversity #VART3030
