A cursory look into A Journal of the Plague Year reveals that the pandemic is nondiscriminatory, all of are affected. Yet, the reality is that Covid-19 is having more impact on certain populations in American communities. Arizona State University's Center for the Study of Religion and Conflict partnered with the Henry Luce Foundation to provide rapid relief funding to marginalized communities in the southwest. As part of the rapid relief program, the Center for the Study of Religion and Conflict is collaborating with A Journal of the Plague Year and the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication to raise awareness about the marginalized communities that were assisted via this grant. By joining this "Southwest Stories" project, we at the Podcast of the Plague Year were granted the opportunity to spotlight one Native American community in Arizona- the White Mountain Apache Tribe. -

Documentation of Pipeline Progress Amid Covid-19
From the Cheyenne River Grassroots Collective: Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the Cheyenne River Grassroots Collective has documented the following footage at a Keystone XL pipeline man camp that is 1/4 mile north of Phillip, South Dakota. This proposed man camp is less than an hour south of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribal reservation border. As you can see, there are over a dozen heavy machinery equipment ready to desecrate Unci Maka. Not to mention, the drug/sex trafficking brought with these man camps... TC Energy is moving rather quickly with pipe transport and reconstruction activities despite a Montana federal judge's ruling to the revocation of permit 12. -

The grief is so unbearable': Virus takes toll on Navajo
"One-third of the homes across the vast, dry reservation don't have running water, forcing families to haul it in. Many in close-knit Navajo communities live in crowded houses where self-quarantine is impossible, and many must drive hours to the nearest grocery store. To most Navajo, isolating an infected person from their family is deeply alien." -

Mask fabric from a friend
As soon as the CDC announced that the general public should start wearing masks whenever we are away from home I began making masks for myself, family, and friends. Unlike most people who sew I did not have a large stash of fabric to work with and the stores were out and even getting it from an online seller was taking four weeks. I reshared a picture of empty shelves at the Walmart fabric department someone else had taken and shared on Facebook and a woman I had only met once offered to send me fabric. I live in Texas and she lives in California. This is the box of fabric she sent via priority mail. I was so excited to receive this treasure. On top of that I've been getting elastic for mask making from another friend in Oklahoma who was able to order it wholesale, right before it became impossible to get. I've sent 60 masks to a local prison, about 30-40 to the Window Rock Reservation Wellness Center, and have given and sold about another 100 to friends, family, and random people who found out I was making masks via Facebook. I've also sent mask to several other states, including Ohio, Alaska, Michigan, and Kentucky, including masks made from the material in that box. *Cotton fabric -

Gallup, New Mexico, Shuts People Out, Preventing Navajo Patrons From Getting Supplies
“The outbreak on the huge Navajo reservation, the nation's largest with 175,000 people, have made people in Gallup nervous. Many see hints of the long-running racism that has divided people in the town for centuries. ‘They targeted the people around here. They're going to be coming to Gallup to shop, so they put a stop to that,’ said Johnnie Henry, who said two of his relatives on the Navajo Nation were apparently infected with COVID-19 while working at a hospital in Gallup. ‘We kind of look at each other and say, are we the ones bringing it? No, it's all over. There's a lot of people who want to go back into Gallup, but they're afraid that they're going to call us names ... say that we are the carriers.’” -
