Coronavirus Kindness: Bay Area Artists Create Murals on Boarded Storefronts to Uplift Local Communities
Businesses across the San Francisco Bay Area have closed, some temporary and some permanently, as a result of California's COVID-19 shelter-in-place orders. Those that hope to re-open have boarded up their windows to try to protect their stores and inventory. As a result of the crushing economic blow of the COVID-19 pandemic, the vibrancy of San Francisco streets has vanished. In response, local arts are turning boarded storefronts into beautiful murals with messages of hope. Local artists are "bringing life and beauty to our streets, sending messages of love to people in their community." Two local art agencies, Building 180 and Art for Civil Discourse, have teamed up and created Paint the Void. Paint the Void pairs local artists with boarded up businesses in an attempt to beautify the city and "to bring hope into the community and inspire people." Artists hope to eventually auction their murals and donate the funds raised to those in need. -

Artists around the world have faced insurmountable challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. San Francisco Bay Area artists are turning public spaces into canvases to inspire hope. In the turbulence of the COVID-19 pandemic, Paint the Void emerged. This organization's mission is "to match local artists with boarded up businesses to create murals as a response to the void left behind in the wake of COVID-19." The group is raising money to grant artists stipends "for their hard work as guardians of hope and beauty in these unprecedented times." To date, the organization has helped 91 local artists create 100 murals across 84 storefront in the San Francisco Bay Area. -

My Last Hair Cut
It has been 19 weeks, 133 days and 3,192 minutes since my last hair appointment. I know this because my last visit to the salon was the day that the county I live in announced shelter-in-place orders. I dropped my kids off at school and had a 9:30 a.m. appointment. I had a feeling it would be my last appointment for a while so I snapped a photo. In denial about what was to come, I confirmed my next appointment and was on my way. By 3 p.m. that day, only essential businesses were allowed to remain open in our county. I am not a vain person. But I definitely miss my hair appointment! Yes, it's because my hair looks awesome afterward. But it's more than that. I miss my stylist. We have known each other for more than a decade. He did my hair for my wedding. I was in the process of setting up a meal train for him as he was supposed to donate a kidney in June (this has been postponed). We are close and I miss him. I'm sad for his loss of business over these past 19 weeks. I am confused why some business have been allowed to re-open, with safety protocols, but his business has not been offered the same opportunity. I am worried about what the upcoming months look like for his business and for him personally. I hope that someday soon they will be allowed to safely resume business. And when they do, I'll be more than ready to see my dear friend. -

Bay Area Hospitals Say Remdesivir is in Short Supply
According to Bay Area health officials, the only drug that is currently effective in treating COVID-19, Remdesivir, is short supply. This is incredibly concerning. While Bay Area counties are on the California state watch list, health dashboards do not indicate an outbreak. If there is already a shortage of this drug, what happens if there is indeed an outbreak? Concerns from ICU headroom and staffing have been highly publicized. But even without an outbreak, we may run out of the drug needed to effectively treat this virus. As restrictions ease up across the state, I hope people are mindful of the horrific realities that await us all if people are not abiding by the social distancing and mask mandates. -

Break the Union
Recently my school district announced that we will begin the school year with remote learning. While many members of the community were in favor of remote learning, many were also incredibly vocal about their wish for a return to full in-person learning. This does not surprise me. There will always be multiple perspectives and positions on any major decisions that need to be made that impact large groups of people. Some individuals in support of full in-person learning have taken to social media and have begun attacking district teachers blaming them and their union for the district's decision to start the school year with remote learning. There is an aggressive tone to many of these posts. As a parent of children that attend school within the district, as well as teacher within the district, I worry about the environment that teacher's are going to be educating children in this year. With remote learning, we will literally be teaching in the homes of parents that are openly demonstrating hostility toward teachers. This brings a great deal of worry and anxiety as I prepare for the upcoming school year. -

Grocery Shopping in a Pandemic
My son and I grocery shopping at Trader Joe's in Castro Valley - everyone knows the drill, you find the marker on the ground to tell you where to stand so you're 6 feet behind the person in front of you. You wear your mask. The line goes fairly quickly, and I've never heard anyone act entitled or complain. (note: I submitted this but I think the photo didn't attach) -

Honey Bear in a Mask
Stores across San Francisco closed their doors during the city's shelter-in-place orders that begin mid-March. Many chose to board up their storefronts to protect their businesses. Local street artist, fnnch, began painting Honey Bears wearing masks on boarded up storefronts. The response was so positive that he began sending Honey Bear kits to various San Francisco businesses. The street artist is now selling Honey Bear kits for those who wish to participate in the Honey Bear scavenger hunt, alongside other Honey Bear merchandise, such as masks. -

We Are Brave. We Are Hopeful. We Are Resilient. We Are San Francisco.
This is a photograph of a piece of street art in San Francisco’s Hayes Valley. Stores across San Francisco closed their doors during the city's shelter-in-place orders that begin mid-March. Many stores boarded up their windows in response to shelter-in-place orders and because of looting that took place across Bay Area cities. Artists responded by creating beautiful murals on boarded up storefronts. This art piece was created by an owner of the restaurant Dobbs Ferry Of San Francisco, Lee Ann Frahm. Taken from the restaurant's instagram account, "When she decided to paint this, it was about finding a message that would connect with someone as they walked by... words can heal, they can make us smile, they can make us feel, they can make us laugh or cry, and they are powerful enough to stop us in our tracks and make us take one extra minute to breathe and appreciate who and where we are." -

A child plays at San Francisco's Palace of Fine Arts
A small child plays on an empty lawn in front of San Francisco's Palace of Fine Arts. A favorite place to relax for local residents, as well as a event and tourist hot spot, the Palace of Fine Arts is typically a spectacle. On any given day, groups gather for picnics, bridal parties pose for photographs, and tourists zoom by on Segways. The emptiness of the Palace of Fine Arts during the early days of California's shelter-in-place orders is definitely a moment in time. -

Exploring...Finally
Our family has been following strict a shelter-in-place since March 13. We have only left the house for contactless grocery pick up and have visited the gas station once. Other than that, we have been isolated. Today, we decided that it would do us all some good to get some fresh air. We left for a favorite nearby hike as soon as we woke up to beat the crowds. We encountered a total of 10 people but were successfully able to keep our distance of 6-10 feet. All but 2 people were masked on the trail. It baffles me as to why people still refuse to wear masks. Especially in this situation in which they could easily remove the mask once they passed other people. Overall, the hike was wonderfully and did us all a lot of good. I was really impressed by my children who had no problems masking independently throughout the hike. -

Water Fountains
I chose to take this picture because even though the fountains were covered to prevent the spread of COVID-19, it was reminiscent of the segregated water fountains pre 1960's. I thought it was an interesting visual since there have been studies to show that black neighborhoods are being disproportionately affected by COVID-19. -

California prisons to release up to 3,500 more inmates to prevent further spread of COVID-19
California is planning to release more corrections inmates early on July 1st in an effort to slow the spread of the corona virus. While this is a step in the right direction advocates point out that this group of inmates does not include those with disabilities, medically fragile, or preexisting conditions. The article also highlights how the virus is spreading from on facility to another through prisoner transfer. While transferring prisoners to facilities with lower populations sounds good to aid in social distancing the people being transferred are actually spreading the virus into new facilities. -

Viva Las Vegas! CANCELLED
Contra Costa County COVID-19 shelter-in-place orders were announced on March 13, 2020. As is typical for me, my calendar was full of various activities in the summer months. I love summer! And, as a teacher, I have more freedom during the summer months to travel and to spend times with loved ones. One of the upcoming events I was most looking forward to was a trip to Las Vegas to celebrate one of my best friend from college's 40th birthday. Somewhere between college and now, life began to move at warp speed and we don't get as much time together as we would like. So, for many reasons, this was a major trip for us all. In early April, it was clear that the trip would no longer happen. We all received a text from the birthday girl letting us know the trip was officially cancelled. While I am sad, it is definitely the right decision. I am hopeful that 2021 will give us the opportunity to reschedule! It is hard to imagine that it could possibly be an entire year before we can all comfortably travel and be together once again. -

"This is the best meal of my life!"
Cousins, Claire Gagnon (1), Taylor Anderson (10), Jessie Anderson (6), Logan Gagnon (5), and Delaney Gagnon (8), have sheltered-in-place together since March 13, 2019. They have had incredible attitudes and have shown true resiliency in their abilities to process this new normal. After over 11 weeks of eating home cooked meals, the adults decided it was time for pizza delivery! The kids were ecstatic and exclaimed over and over, "This is the BEST meal of my life!" It was sweet to see them take such joy in something they likely took for granted before this experience. -

Making Us Matter: In response to COVID-19, USF doctoral students co-found virtual high school
Amidst school closures across the country due to the COVID-19 pandemic, University of San Francisco doctoral students, Eghosa Obaizamomwan Hamilton and Gertrude Jenkins, founded and launched Making Us Matter Virtual High School in March 2020. While educational equity issues compounded as a result of nation-wide school closures, Hamilton and Jenkins built an educational platform in which a collective of Black educators would create challenging and empowering curriculum focused on social justice and Blackness. Making Us Matter is offered, free of charge, to any student interested in curriculum focused on Black-inclusion. While educational institutions have scrambled in their attempts to serve students during the COVID-19 pandemic, Making Us Matter is a shining example of how educational leaders can disrupt education and build learning experiences that challenge the shortcomings of traditional educational models. -

Bay Area Protesters Giggin' to E-40 in Oakland, California
Over a week into the protests following the death of George Floyd, San Francisco Bay Area protests took on a new vibe. Protesters marching from the Piedmont Police Department to the Oakland Police Department starting playing Bay Area rap legend E-40's arguably most popular song "Tell Me When To Go." Protesters, some of which were wearing masks due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, gigged (slang for "danced") to the Bay Area legend's song during their march. The San Francisco Bay Area culture is unlike any other. It was heartwarming to see the spirit of the Bay alive and well. #HST580, #ASU, #nojusticenopeace, #sanfranciscobayarea -

A privileged withe boy in a privilegedsocietys take on quarantine
For complete context, I am a white 8th grader at an exceptional private school who lives in the bay area and is very privileged. Today I will be talking about hat quarantine has been like for me. At the start, I was happy at thought of maybe a few weeks off school because of some flu but then it became serious and school was canceled for the entire year. as the days went on I started a routine. online school from 9 to 2 (with lunch in between of course) then exercise outside for an hour (pretty much just walked my dog most of the time), then play video games for most of the remaining day. video games were the only way I made contact for most of the quarantine with my friends. my favorite games to play during quarantine was 2k and COD but mostly COD. Anyways that has been my life for the last few months and it has not been half bad. Besides the fact I couldn't go out or see any of my friend's quarantine was kinda nice. But after a while, people started getting tired of quarantine and started to see their friends again. It started with most girls who were craving social interaction and then eventually after a few weeks spread to the boys. another thing about quarantine was I was on my phone a lot. I averaged around 7 hours a day of screen time which included binging of Netflix shows, viewing of plenty TikTok, and sending lots of snaps. Some shows I have watched over qaurantine are tiger king, money hiest, community, all american, space force, etc.. also, another thing if this matters to you are my political beliefs. I am liberal and I think trump is an awful president and person (excuse my language). Anyways quarantine hasn't been too exciting and it has been kinda boring. also, the protest in the name of George Floyd and I do not support the violent protests but I truly believe In the cause that they are supporting and I think we shouldn't have to live in a racist world. If I am being honest I would actually like to go to a protest but my parent probably won't let me because its "dangerous" or something along those lines. Anyway, that has been my take on my quarantine and I hope whoever you are that is reading this that you are living in a better world with a better government right now. Thanks for your time. -please excuse my awful grammar -

San Francisco Le Meridien Hotel Heart, Battery Street and Clay Street, North facing facade of hotel from my apartment.
The hotel workers, who are out of a job right now, had the thought to express love to people in the area and it really struck me that is exactly what we all needed at that moment: love. It made me sad for everyone, but gave me hope as well. I posted on Facebook and said: This hotel near where I live has been mostly dark the last few weeks, but tonight they made a nice heart. Do I become homeless or do I risk my family's lives?
I have been forced into a situation of whether to stay at my Campus and risk becoming homeless by the May 10th mandatory move-out date or go back to my home city of San Francisco and put my entire family at risk of contamination due to their immuno-compromised nature. This situation is like Russian Roulette with a Glock-17. While I made my decision it makes me extremely worried regardless of what happens next. Nothing has felt so gut wrenching, and nothing has felt so terrifying than this decision. -
