St. Mary's Response to Racial Injustice: Email from President Thomas Mengler
The object is an email from St. Mary's University President Thomas Mengler recognized Juneteenth stating that campus will be closed that Friday, June 19th, 2020, for prayer and reflection on racial justice and racism in the U.S. In the email, President Mengler acknowledges the murder of George Floyd to reflect on during the summer of mass protests and the Black Lives Matter movement. The campus community is also called to action with upcoming initiatives to create an "anti-racist" university. Dialogue and action are said to occur and relate to the Mariniast belief and tradition to act for the common good. The email represents a significant time within our pandemic year, which was the death of George Floyd that influenced mass protests and greater momentum for the existing Black Lives Matter, demanding the police be defunded. The email portrays how St.Mary's as an institution has reflected on the national issue and its influence on Marianist culture and call to action. -

Black Lives Matter and Covid-19
The protests have a lot going on without the added stress of the pandemic. In many photographs of the protests, even the riots, there is a lot of masks. Some groups appear to social distance, but others like in this picture do not. People are trying their best to support the cause and be careful at the same time. -

University of Pittsburgh Active for Social Justice
This article demonstrates the active voice of Black students to access diversity and social justice at the University of Pittsburgh (Pitt). The website's creation is a way for students to actively notify Pitt of any kind of social bias shown. Protests for social justice across the nation have acted as a catalyst for Universities to become more aware of social justice reforms within their institutions. -

NBA for Social Justice
The photograph on the right shows Trae Young, a Atlanta Hawks player, protesting at a Black Lives Matter event in June of 2020. I choose this picture because I am an Atlanta Hawks fan but more importantly because of the support provided by the NBA for social justice. Since the protests have started the NBA and the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) have fully committed in supporting the social justice movement. Even with the NBA season over with now the spotlight to fight social justice has still continued. The NBA will continue to donate and provide support for education to minority communities. The NBA and NBPA have also made it their mission to address the lack of diversity in team management. Finally they have also made it their mission to help address police and criminal justice change in America. Protests are a bigger influence than people think and it is good to see big associations willing to make a difference for social justice. -

Illinois College Football Team Fights Against Racism
The Tweet declares that the University of Illinois, The Fighting Illini, are in support of social justice. The college football team is supporting the Black Lives Matter movement by wearing black decaled insignias on their helmets with the Black Lives Matter fist symbol on the back of the helmet. The fist is a powerful gesture associated with the social justice protest. The video also states that football is just a game and social justice is a real world priority. A college football team and university realizing the fight against racism and social inequalities is more important than their institution is a significant event in the fight for social justice. Of course not all fans or comments think it is appropriate for the team to wear these symbols but all movements will have discourse in their pursuit to fight for social justice. This statement to display these images are closely related to how far the protests have come in the fight for social justice. -

How social justice is affecting POC
I interviewed my friend who has been affected by social justice issues that have been occurring in this country. He informed me how he has not been able to receive jobs he was overqualified for because of the color of his skin, how he has to fear driving by a police officer because of the color of his skin, and how he overall is not treated equally. He fully supports the movements going on in the country today and hopes for a better day. -

How am I Supposed to be a Student When the World is Burning Down Around Me? A Student’s Personal Experience
I wanted to share the kitchen table's image in my family's house because it has become my workspace and classroom. I have my laptop, water, and food in the image because the virtual college has become a non-stop task. As an undergraduate student transitioning to virtual learning, I have struggled greatly. The weekdays are filled with zoom classes, discussion boards, dozens of essays, and monotonous assignments that feel like busywork. Weekdays and weekends are the same. Universities and professors have maintained high expectations for students even though we are in a pandemic, economic depression, detrimental election year, and significant social justice movement. Most days, I struggle to want to be the best student I can be when I feel less like a person. It is difficult to get out of bed, especially as hope fades every day with an increase in COVID-19 cases and deaths, people becoming jobless, homeless, and the human rights of so many people being violated. It feels insane sometimes to log on for hours when the world seems to be burning down around me. -

The Justice for George Floyd Information Map
As a librarian who works alot with maps, I am very impressed with this site: Justice for George Floyd. This is a way for anyone who wants to protest in the greater NYC area to keep track of upcoming and past events. You can also sign up and add your own events, which will then appear with a description link and an appropriate protesting icon on the map. -

Tweet Changes Headline
Language is changing to be more people focused. This has happened in several arenas including incarceration. Instead of calling people inmates, prisoners, or convicts there is a movement to change the language to a people first option such as incarcerated person. One activist, Adnan Khan, of Restore Justice, a California based nonprofit seeking to change the criminal justice system, saw his Tweet about people first language cause the Los Angeles Times to change their headline. -

Ode to the United States
My story is about the deaths of Black and Indigenous people at the hands of COVID-19 and how it's a reflection of how the United States views our existence. This is important to me because when we talk about COVID-19 in the future historians need to talk about state sanction violence against us and how it relates to COVID-19. When they talk about the number of people who died, they need to included statistics on the amount of Black and Indigenous people who lost their lives to this disease and other violence during the pandemic. -

MIRA’s agenda for an inclusive response to COVID-19
The Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition collected a series of helpful documents for immigrants and refugees in Massachusetts about the COVID-19 pandemic. At the start, they created an agenda on how the federal and local governemnts should react to the pandemic in relation to immigrant communities. Part of the agenda calls on Trump to release detainees that cannot be kept safe, but as the news as shown, ICE continues to detain immigrants and some have died in detention centers of the virus. -

COVID-19 Cases Surge In ICE Detention article
"The number of immigrants with COVID-19 in Immigration Customs Enforcement custody has risen rapidly. More than 2,700 detainees nationwide have tested positive, according to ICE data, and the Eloy detention facility is among the hardest hit by the pandemic. More than 200 detainees there have tested positive — a tenfold increase in less than three weeks." NPR published an article highlighting the vast spread of COVID amongst immigrants in detention centers. As the pandemic has spread, ICE has continued to arrest and hold detainees in detention centers, while not providing safety measures to curb or prevent the spread of the virus. -

Through this pandemic, we were tested as a society on how strong our morals, values, and beliefs are. We were exposed to how fragile our ideals are and how far we truely are from a perfect world. -

Tweets from Inside a Prison 5/31-6/6/2020 by Railroaded Underground
These images show the tweets from an incarcerated person, using a contraband cell phone to tell the world what it is like to be incarcerated during the pandemic. This week he continues to talk about the murder of George Floyd by the police, protestors and violence against them, his own fear of white officers in his prison which he blames on systemic racism, states his views on defunding police and the need for new politicians and laws, as well as fear of prison transfers spreading the virus. -

Local High school stands up for BLM and social injustice
We live in a small town. Our city of Moriarty NM has a population of about 1800 people, and the town next to us, Edgewood NM has close to 6100 people. This is a town that you can hide your true feelings because you're not around a lot of people, especially people of different backgrounds and nationalities. On June 6th, 2020 our local High school kids put together a peaceful protest to speak up against police brutality and racial injustice. They had been personally affected by this because they are of different nationalities, or are close friends with people who have been racially profiled before. They went through the proper channels, speaking with the local police department and securing a protest permit. When the Facebook page was created, it spread like wildfire, and the people who have hidden their hatred in this small town for so many years were now outraged at the thought. My daughter, Faith Ridenour was apart of the group setting up this protest. She and her friends were proud to speak out and we were proud of her for raising her voice but that pride turned into fear real quick when we started seeing the things our community members were saying about them on Facebook. A page called, "Torrance County Bulletin Board" posted the event and the comments were frightening, "Stand in my way and I will run you over" said one community member, and another chimed in with, "We will be there to clean up the mess after you take them down." I commented on every post I could to let them know that these are kids from our High school standing up for injustice. I begged people to remember that they're young and our next generation and we must lift them up and allow them to have voices or we are doomed as a society. I was immediately responded to with, "If you play with the big dogs, you will get hurt." Because of the hatred that was being spread online, my husband and I were in fear of our daughter's life and chose to stand out there with her. In one of the pictures, you will see our daughter standing with her sign, and my husband standing behind her to protect her. As a mother, it made me proud to see my daughter standing up for her fellow man, and my husband standing behind her to keep her safe. As an American, I was devastated at the idea that we have not grown from racism and are still against people who will stand up to it. As we arrived on the day of the protest we quickly saw the opposition. The picture attached only shows one of them with their automatic weapon, but the truth is, all of them were armed. As our kids shouted "Use your voice, black lives matter" the other side of the street shouted back, "All lives matter." Keeping in mind that this is all happening during the Covid-19 pandemic, our protestors wore masks to keep everyone safe, where the "All lives matter" group, did not. I found that to be pretty ironic. I am proud of these kids who stood up to adults. I am proud to know them and lift them up, and I believe our future will be better because of this generation. -

Ellos piden trabajar, luego de que el centro de abastos esté cerrado más de un mes y nadie puede tener acceso. Doctors and Protests
In the middle of a national public health crisis, a national racial crisis also occurred. As doctors and healthcare workers around the world work to save people, protests and large social gatherings seem as though they would be a new nightmare. Instead, numerous healthcare professionals have come out in support of the protests; they highlight that racism, just like coronavirus, is as huge national health issue. It is a discussion that highlights just how important it is to get it right in solving racism and addressing the systemic issues that plague this country. -

My purchase from one of Bandcamp's fee-waived fridays
Today (5/1/20), bandcamp.com is waiving all of its revenue so all money from purchases will go directly to artists. Bandcamp is a music-sharing platform where artists or labels can directly upload music for purchase. Today, I purchased a compilation of B-sides, demos, and covers from a bunch of musicians. The compilation is called "The Song is Coming from Inside the House" and all proceeds will go to the Groundswell Rapid Response Fund which provides fast funding to grassroots organizations led by women of color, trans people of color, and low-income women and trans people in critical, but unexpected, fights to protect and advance reproductive and social justice, including mutual aid societies, rent moratoriums, and digital organizing. -

Better World
This tweet calls of society to emerge from the pandemic and work to create a better world. Far too many factors allowed for the rise and continued spread of the virus. Society is now facing the consequences of such an intense global crisis, and some of the struggles could have been avoided had appropriate measures been taken, especially in America. Had America had paid sick leave, free health insurance, etc., maybe the spread of the virus could have been slowed. While we will never know, we must do better. We must take what we learn from this and create a better world for all.
