empty shelves
My plaque story begins in March 2020, right in the middle of my senior year of my senior year of high school. that day we were let out of school for, what we were told, 2 weeks. One of my friends was away at a baseball camp that night and he had left his car in our school parking lot so me and my friends decided to go to the grocery store, buy a bunch of Saran Wrap, and Saran Wrap his car. At this point the amount that the pandemic would affect our lives hadn't sank in yet but when we got to the grocery store to buy the wrap we saw a very surreal sight. Hundreds of people were there wearing masks and gloves, and even goggles. People were buying canned food and toilet paper in mass quantities and there were numerous empty shelves. It looked like something out of a movie and that's when it began to sink in how crazy the situation was. that same week I remember going hiking with a couple of my friends and talking about the pandemic. I remember us wondering if anyone that we knew would end up getting the virus or if it would fizzle out before it hit Pennsylvania and if or when we would go back to school to finish our senior year. It turned out that we would never go back and "two weeks to slow the spread" turned into months and then years. It is now February 2022 and our lives are still being turned upside down by this pandemic. All we can do now is hope that things eventually return to normal and that we as humans can learn from the mistakes made during this pandemic. -

New Beginnings - Meal Vouchers for International Students
The meal voucher was made for international students coming during the first weekend of August and did not have food, nor was the cafe open for them to eat. During the summer of 2021, communication between the University Cafeteria and the Center for International Programs was complex due to changes inside the Center for International Programs. No plans were made for the incoming students coming that weekend. For that reason, the Center for International Programs had to create a meal voucher to eat at Starbucks or Chick-fil-a inside the campus. Twenty students were coming in the weekend, and the CIP team had to check them in, bring food supplies, and pick them up from the airport. -

My Thoughts
I think we should and should not share the United States supplies for the virus with India. I think we should use it on ourselves first and then give them out leftovers. If we dont use it for ourselves first it would be dumb. It's like before you get on a plane and the plane crew goes over on what to do and not to do when there is an emergency on the plane. Say put your mask thing on yourself before you put it on others. It is the same with the vaccines and supplies. We need to use it for ourselves and America before we use it in India. However we need to make sure those supplies get there as soon as we are done with them. If we do not get the supplies to them fastly many will die. Also people could create something new because they could catch other diseases if they are not clean of germs. Also the hospital is running out of oxygen. Oxygen is very needed in order to keep people alive. From the video the hospital just does not look safe in general. Everyone was so crammed up and were not socially distancing. I am pretty sure they are also out of covid test which could lead to them being in a room with other positive people because they think they have it. Sometimes they will think wrong and end up getting it because they are next to people who are positive with the virus. -

My First Homemade Mask
Back at the beginning of April, when the CDC had just finally recommended that the general public wear masks when going out, I was eager to follow this guideline to the best of my abilities. Unfortunately, I didn't have any masks nor any good way of purchasing masks. (Online orders of anything were taking very long at that point in time, and masks weren't readily available in most stores not that I could get to one anyway.) So, I decided to try to make myself a mask. I wanted to make a really good mask. I did lots of research to find out what the best mask materials were for blocking the virus and everything. I searched my home, looking through my clothing, my towels, my reusable bags, trying to find the "right" material. I wasn't satisfied by anything I found. Given that, I decided that my best option was a relatively thick hand towel. I found a template online and proceeded to spend a couple hours hand sewing the mask that you see on my face in the picture. (I have very little experience hand sewing, so I didn't do a very neat job at all.) The final product was this huge mask that covered the entire lower half of my face. I mean, it worked, but it looked pretty hilarious. I did wear this mask out a number of times. It was basically my only option until I was able to order some better masks off the internet. I'm glad I don't have to wear that ridiculous homemade mask anymore, but I'm actually pretty impressed that I managed to make one at all. -

Screenshot of Amazon Order for Face Masks
My mother recently ordered a supply of face masks for our family to wear when we are out in public. The order states that they have already shipped, but tracking the package shows it has not yet left California. Note: These are not N95 face masks, which is the type of medical face mask in short supply right now and needed by those who work in the medical and first responder fields. -

Demster's Bread Packaging Says Thank-You to Frontline Workers
For the first time since coming home to live with my parents for the summer/the pandemic my mom bought the brand of bread and thickness of slice I like (she prefers thin slice Wonderbread.) Demster's is a well known and established Canadian brand. It was only when about 3/4 of the way through the loaf that I noticed the message on the bag for grocery and food chain workers. In red font to match the Canadian Maple Leaf which if part of the company's logo and reflect the patriotic nature of the message it reads: "OUR FRONTLINE SHOWS STRENGTH. / OUR FRONTLINE FEEDS FAMILIES. / OUR FRONTLINE SERVES COMMUNITIES. / TO OUR BAKERS, FRANCHISEES, DISTRIBUTORS, AND GROCERS HELPING TO KEEP CANADA GOING / THANK YOU. -

Healthcare Worker's Experience
Liz, a healthcare worker in Pittsburgh, PA, described her experience under COVID-19 as being very stressful. There is very little hand sanitizer or masks, and the facility where she works does not have a good track record for allowing enough sick time, and is even known for denying sick leave in the first place. She doesn't have a car, and on the bus people are not practicing social distancing very well, which is an additional stressor for her. -
