You're Fired [PRIVATE -DUPLICATE]
I worked the polls at Nevitt Forest Elementary during the 59th presidential election. The lines were crowded at 6:00 prior to the polls official opening at 7:00. The energy in the voting room was definitely mixed--some determined, some anxious, and some angry at the previous conditions of Trump administration of 2017-21. Although the energy of the election results are still mixed today still, this meme reflects one of the more amused and joyous reactions of the election turnout. Thus, using one of Trump's infamous lines of his famed tv show Celebrity Apprentice, this meme pokes fun at the importance of public ratings not only in pop culture but in politics as well. -

Bored People Care More
The pandemic created a rift among people. Everyone’s lives were up hauled and not many people found themselves living the life they didn’t think they were going to live. People have been getting sick, people have been dying, and the negativity this plague has brought has only multiplied in society. I believe one of the main issues for the negativity, hate, and chaos we’ve seen in the country this past year is because people are bored. Not just bored and wondering what to do this afternoon during the plague, but the kind of bored that results when that thought repeats itself every day for months on end. And with nothing better to do, and no hope to be found, people start to look for something believe in. Everyone has become more hard-set on their beliefs, and voices have gotten exponentially louder. Left-leaning people find community in the fight for justice and equality. The protests and rallies have been bigger. Without much else in life going on to care about, people can care more about the overall issues they believe matter. Right-wingers found themselves deep in the fan club of President Trump. Their voices got louder, more arguments and fights began to break out among people. The election was a bigger deal with a bigger turn out than the nation has ever seen. The country felt very divided, yet at the same time, people were coming together more than we’ve ever seen. With the pandemic came a wave of loneliness among many people, attributing to why so many have so comfortable found their place in the political group they believe in. It’s a community in public life when there’s no public life to really find a community in during a pandemic. The issues of gender, race and power have all been largely argued over as a result of this newfound divide. Overall, I believe the country can be better off now that the pandemic has focused people on such societal issues, as getting people to care and getting people to make a stand is the way to make change happen. And then on the religious side of things, many religions have found a deeper sense of community as people come together in hopes of connecting and caring throughout the plague. These voices prove to be heard, too, usually coming from the right-wing side of the divide, complicating the progressive movements that left-wingers campaign for, movements which ordinarily would be understood as in accordance with the faith and ideals of many religions. This results in a lot of complicatedness, arguments among people, and chaos in the country. It’s a difficult time, but it’s a time of growth for everyone. For everyone in the public sphere to figure out what they believe in, and hear the voices of others. After the pandemic is over, and many people have gone back to caring about other things in life, maybe people will evolve their ideals with an open mind and open the nation to more active discourse and change going forward. -

Utilizing American History to Understand Present Day Events
For my HIS 103 final project, I wrote an essay about how Americans utilize media platforms to draw connections between American history and current events. The similarities that contemporary Americans create reveal that while much has changed legally, our country continues to remain divided on the same topics. -

Over 130 COVID-19 cases in the Secret Service
The Washington Post reported that over 130 members of the Secret Service are either in quarantine or have contracted the virus. 130 people accounts for around 10% of the total number of secret service agents. The outbreak comes as a result of the amount of traveling President Donald Trump did before the election. The White House has received massive amount of criticism for their lack of care. -

Studying Abroad During the Pandemic & Feelings of Uncertainty
This is an email I sent St. Mary's study abroad coordinator, Raquel, at the end of February while I was studying abroad in Alcalá de Henares, Spain. Cases were increasing in surrounding cities and I was beginning to worry. Students from my international program at the Universidad de Alcalá were being sent home and I was unsure of what my options were at the time. Nobody knew how serious and widespread Coronavirus would become, but I feel grateful that I listened to my intuition and came home on March 12th before Trump decided to close the borders on March 13th. This experience is unforgettable to me and many others who were abroad at this time. -

Elections during a pandemic
The 2020 election is arguably going to one of the most important ones in American History. Not only because of the explosive tension between the two candidates but also because of COVID-19. This invisible enemy has crippled not only our nation but the world. It has forced countries to shut down, leaving economies unstable and politics shaky as ever. In some countries, the virus has brought leaders together. In the U.S, it has deepened the bipartisanship. Rather than reaching across the aisle, both Republicans and Democrats use this pandemic for their political gains. The conversation of COVID has not only a global issue but is also treated as a Presidential Candidate debate topic. The health of our nation is vastly essential; however, politicians do not hesitate to point fingers when numbers continue to rise. Not surprisingly, the most controversial opinion is coming from President Trump, who boldly stated he would be pushing back the Presidential Election. This is not Constitutional legal, nor does he have the power to enforce this. With Americans eager to vote for the upcoming election, we are faced with the following predicament; how do we ensure our voters' safety? Many leaders are leaning and enforcing, state by state mail-in ballots. Eligible voters are mailed ballots before the official election day and send it back to the appropriate party. However, even with this solution, there has been push back from Washington. Currently, the Trump administration has cut funding for the United States Postal Office. In an interview, he "frankly acknowledged that he's starving the postal service of that money to make it harder to process an expected surge of mail-in ballots" (Riccardi, N. 2020). Studies have shown that Democrats are more willing to vote via mail. With this, Trump is taking every precaution to slow the Democratic wave that is approaching the White House. Obama, who is usually silent during politics, has called Trump out for financially starving the postal service. Not only is COVID changing the way we vote, but it is also changing the landscape of American Health Care. More than ever, Health Care for all Americans is being supported and pushed onto the next president. When casting their ballot, Americans are now asking themselves, 'who can take care of my family and I best during a pandemic?'. It has been clear that this virus is not going away, and we are expecting another wave. With this in mind, we have to ask who is best suited to guide us through this apocalyptic world. -

Trump used “Chinese Virus” on his social media
I always look through different social media to be aware of anything that might affect me as an international student from China. Donald Trump’s Twitter is one of them, and there are multiple posts from him using the term “Chinese Virus” which worry me. For clarification, I do not agree or disagree with this post from Donald Trump. It is only educational and worrying for me to see following arguments from different people around the world, including U.S. and China. Both sides are attacking and insulting each other over who should be responsible and extend to political/cultural/social issues, disregarding the reliability of these issues. -

Thank You Mr. President
As a teacher I have witnessed quite a large debate playing out at school board meetings, over social media, and across the dinner table about whether or not schools should reopen for the fall semester. Perhaps one of the most compelling arguments I have seen is this recent tweet from President Trump. This description is very much full of sarcasm. Please, for the love of all humanity, consider the common good. Teachers want to go back to school but we want to do it safely. For right now, we need to be ok with teaching online. It's not ideal but we can make it work. -

Lava Effective against Coronavirus
This is a humorous meme about the idea of using lava to fight COVID-19. Don't do it! President Trump has suggested injecting disinfectant, getting sunlight into the body, drinking bleach, taking hydroxychloriquine as a preventative measure, and having it magically disappear with warm weather. He hasn't yet suggested using lava, but stand by... -

Old Man Pushed During Protest. Is He an Antifa Agent?!
During the Buffalo Black Lives Matter protests, cops pushed an old man down and just left him there despite his head injuries. Trump tweeted this: “Buffalo protester shoved by Police could be an ANTIFA provocateur. 75 year old Martin Gugino was pushed away after appearing to scan police communications in order to black out the equipment.” Of course memes cropped up instructing us how to know if our grandparents were actually ANTIFA agents -

People think the United States has given up on fighting Covid-19
This is a news article about how europeans have reacted to the United States opening back up amidst rising coronavirus numbers. Many Americans are still concerned with the virus but are being forced to return to work or be fired.Others take this as a sign that the coronavirus is either not as dangerous or not as much of a problem. Everywhere in the United States there is a spike in cases and it seems that the more than 100,000 lost lives doesn't matter more than money. -

Thoughts
It's currently June 2nd, 2020. I'm sitting in my room at 2:47am thinking about how the world is slowly falling apart. I didn't know that Friday would be my last day in school, my last day in those hallways rushing up the stairs to Chemistry for the final period of the day. I didn't think it would be the last time I spoke to my friends and teachers face to face. Every day is a new problem, right now there are protests all over the world following the black lives matter movement. Cops are out of control, abusing their power and killing innocent people. Stores and homes are being looted and burned down. I've been watching the news and our "president" has ordered the military to open fire if they start looting. It would seem the world is falling apart as I sit at home. The pandemic may have helped our environment but it shows that our kind is ruthless. They can't stay at home and have to protest the virus. I sometimes wonder what they think they are doing, you can't protest a virus. Stay home, you are the reason the cases keep going up. The racism and abuse of power taken on by the cops who are meant to protect us has got out of control and everything is being publicized. I wish it would stop. It's important that I got this off my mind because our children and grandchildren are going to learn about this. It's important they know how terrible our president was during this time and how stupid people can be. They should know that millions violated the stay at home order and caused our cases to rise. They should know that while everyone was at home, police were outside giving masks to WHITE people in Central Park while beating up minorities in lower income area because they didn't have a mask or weren't social distancing. They should know how terrible America really is. -

American Values
The photo represents the experience of privileged white people during this pandemic and their selfishness. Personally this upsets me because these people have worms for brains and are protesting something that cannot be resisted; disease isn’t something you can literally protest an end for, you have to wait and hope like the rest of it. -

Coronavirus causes wave of fake new
The Coronavirus is just a new way for the media to badger President Donald Trump. First when Trump called it the Chinesevirus he was immediately attacked by media and was being portrayed as a racist for saying something that is simply true. Then he was asked many questions about that comment. The media is also claiming that the coronavirus attacks African American more then white people. The media should stop attacking Trump and scaring American citizens with FAKE NEWS. *Date as submitted: 11:16 AM 5/6/2020 -

Clorox as medicine meme
Many shocked jokes, late night comedy skits, and more about Trumps remarks. Traditional role of the nations leader is to give advice about how to protect the entire country and to show that he cares about Americans. Instead, Trump suggested something deadly and showed he doesn’t care at all. This meme is particularly good because Clorox bleach is upside down as if attached to an iv and turned into an inhaler and pills. In the current pandemic, disinfectant products like Clorox or 409 can be hard to find. Public health agencies are scrambling to teach people not to use bleach or Lysol internally because some might try the President’s ideas. It’s dangerous and it never was a joke as we all know. The memes help us cope by laughing at the utter horror of covid19 deaths and the terrible federal response led by the president. -
