The Year the World Went Crazy
I was not directly affected by the Coronavirus, but I knew several who were, some got over it like a cold, others did not survive. There was a devastating number of deaths resulting from the virus, yet so many people adamantly believed it was fake, it was something created by the American government to control citizens. Talking to people from other countries, it was actually embarrassing because the events that transpired in 2020, well, not so much the events, but the reactions to these events, became quite a joke to other countries. 2020 was a year of total divide in many ways: mask wearers vs. mask refusers, pro-vaccination vs anti-vaccination, democrats vs. republicans, races and racism, hoarders vs. "just buy what you need" shoppers, partiers and clubbers vs. stay-at-homers, the list goes on. The thing that affected my life the most in 2020 was not COVID, but the society I live in being in a constant state of chaos and aggression and judgement. This was not the first time a virus spread to other countries from one origin country, it was not the first time that origin country was China, and it was not created by the American government to control the people....I guess 2020 was also a year of conspiracy theories. It's disgusting to think of all those who perished in the pandemic from the virus who are forgotten about or disregarded due to the conspiracy theories against the virus. It was just a horrible year all around, huge step back from mankind in its morals and ethics. -

The debate on the nature of coronavirus
This is a sticker I saw on the street that says 'imagine having a virus so deadly you have to be tested to even know if you have it.' It appears as though someone has attempted to peel it off. I think this image reflects rather well the differing opinions and theories about the origins and seriousness of the virus. That someone has attempted to remove it signals the rather heated and emotional nature of the debate, as those who question what we have been told about the virus are regularly labeled 'conspiracy theorists.' In my view, that there is differing opinions on the virus, no matter how controversial, is part of the free speech that makes this country so great, and that we can debate these issues somewhat freely should not be taken for granted. -

Ontario dog first in Canada to test positive for COVID-19, but researcher says there are likely more
An Ontario dog living with four human COVID-19 patients is the first dog in Canada to test positive for the virus. But researchers say the discovery doesn't mean pet owners need to worry. The animal is from the Niagara Region and lived in a home where four out of six people had the virus, according to Dr. Scott Weese, chief of infection control at the University of Guelph's Ontario Veterinary College. "At last check, both dogs were fine, everyone in household sounds like they're doing well," he said. Weese described COVID-19 as a "human virus." There is some risk of animal-to-human transmission when it comes to mink, and experiments have shown infected cats can pass the virus to other cats, but that has not been shown in dogs, he said. "If your dogs has COVID or is infected with this virus, it got it from you or someone else in the household." -

How pets help people cope during a pandemic
This article talks about the numerous health benefits that scientific studies have proven we get from pet ownership. During the pandemic, those health benefits are more important than ever. Given that there is no evidence that people can get COVID from their animal companions, interacting with your pet is a fun, easy, and safe way to stay healthy and happy during the pandemic. -

COVID 19
COVID 19 I decided to choose as a source an image related to the COVID 19 virus. The image belongs to https://www.pharmaceutical-technology.com/news/coronavirus-countries-cross-100-covid-19-world-update/. This website provides information about the virus and was last updated on March 12, 2020. The image shows the virus spread around the planet earth. This image helps me explain what the virus is and how it spread. I select this type of source because I consider that it expresses a simple but concise message. I consider that it is something that everyone can understand and from which they can learn. By looking at the image people can get an idea of what the spread of the virus really meant. They can observe that its spread was not in a specific area, but rather that it spread around the entire world. Since the virus made its first appearance in Wuhan China, everything has turned into a catastrophe. The virus began to spread rapidly around the world. People were really not prepared for the COVID 19 virus. Many people died from this virus and those who were infected and survived did not have a good time. The virus isolated everyone and everything stopped being what it always was. People could no longer visit their loved ones or spend time with them. Many businesses closed, and as a result many people lost their jobs. Now everyone had to wear masks, they had to keep their distance from each other, and they also had to constantly wash their hands. This was somewhat frustrating, as people searched for gloves, masks, and disinfectants in stores. However, because everyone was looking for the same items there was a shortage of them. Sometimes when people found such items they could only buy one per person, especially alcohol and disinfectants. People really felt desperate. Things had changed a lot. Now many people had to work from home. The same thing happened with the students. Students had to take classes from home through a computer. This was something that didn't seem right to everyone. Many students lost interest. I consider that both historians and everyone in the future should be aware of what the COVID 19 virus was. Although the COVID 19 virus is a new virus that arose suddenly, it is not the first time that humanity experiences something like this. Previously around a hundred years ago something similar had happened with the Spanish flu. The Spanish flu like COVID 19 had also become a pandemic. Because of this, millions of people died. However, this was something that remained in the past as no one spoke of this event. I consider that people could have learned something from the history of the Spanish flu and applied that knowledge during COVID. However, few people are aware of what the Spanish flu was. Therefore, it is necessary to take into account everything related to COVID 19. Although it is likely that the appearance of a new virus cannot be prevented, at least people will know how to protect themselves and thus prevent the spread. The virus spread around the world rapidly for various reasons. However, one of these reasons was that people had no idea how to react to the virus. If people had had an idea of how to protect themselves at that time, perhaps the virus would not have spread the way it did. I believe that acquiring the necessary knowledge about the virus will be of great help in the future. -

Reconsidering Taking the Vaccine
I live in Bronx, New York. When the pandemic struck, it affected everyone tremendously whether you contracted the virus or not. New York is a densely populated place and it immediately required a shut down of all day to day activities due to the soaring virus. It was so impactful that my school had to be closed and I could not go out with my friends on the weekends anymore due to the fact that all business places were closed. Many people in New York contracted the virus which at one point had the highest Coronavirus cases. It made my family and I very depressed to be stuck at home all day and worrying if anyone of us would be the next person to be personally affected by the virus. During the pandemic, which is still current, the introduction of the vaccine made me feel very relieved. Even though it is not a cure for the virus but it would help to fight the virus if you do contract it, and it also lessens the likeliness that it is contracted. This was such good news to my ears. When I found out that there were different types of the vaccines I was very skeptical about it because I wondered to myself about the different component that each might have. Following this, there was word that the Johnson and Johnson vaccine was causing bloodclots. This made me extremely scared to take any of the vaccines overall even though I want to be secured from the virus but I worry that the vaccine would not agree well with my body. This was a mental battle within my family if we want to take the vaccine or not. -

Coronaland -- “Little Shop of 2020 Horrors”
With Carnival parades cancelled, somebody had the bright idea to start the Krewe of House Floats to (a) make up for it and (b) to offer work to unemployed float artisans. The results have gone beyond everyone's wildest imagination with 5,000+ people signing up in New Orleans, surrounding parishes, and around the world. “Little Shop of 2020 Horrors” on Bouny St. in Algiers Point paid tribute to a variety of things that made 2020 a crazy year including the coronavirus. -

Final Thoughts and Statistics of COVID
Corona Virus statistics show that up until we had the vaccine the number of people who had it increased day to day and once the vaccine was released the amount of people affected has gone down. I have not personally been affected by corona virus except by having a couple friends and a teacher who had it. I was near those people and had to stay home for ten days due to the exposure. Some things I have enjoyed in this Covid season are being able to have tons of free time to do whatever I want, such as redecorating my bedroom and invest and watch the stocks from day to day, but also having too much free time is not fun when you have nothing to do. I have also experienced having to stay overly clean washing my hands every twenty minutes and wearing a mask out in public which are definitely things that I have not enjoyed. This has been a very eventful year with Corona Virus. -

Covid statistics
Just today, 15,846 people died from Covid-19. In worldwide total, 2.15 million people have died so far. With 99.9 million people testing positive so far, you never know who will get it next. Currently there are 42.65 million people worldwide contaminated with Covid, a quarter of which are close to death, this is why its important to wear a face covering and keep up good hygiene. Even if your loved ones aren't high risk, you never know what the person you passed in the pasta isle could be going through. Hospitals around the world have had to convert their services to caring for Covid victims alone, leaving medical care scarce for people in need. -

Statistics about Covid
The internet says there was been 99.9 million cases and 2.15 million deaths globally. But in the US the was been 25.3M cases and 421K deaths. I personally don't trust the Covid death count completely because there has been a lot of rumors that they are counting people who die from heart attacks and things like that to the count of the Covid death count. I am not sure why, but I have heard that the more covid deaths counted the more money the doctors get. My life through the pandemic was weird. I got a lot of time on my hands to workout and train for football and bulk up, but on there other hand school is so much harder for me. Everybody else loves because they can cheat, but my mom would kill me ( if I got caught ). -

Covid Statistics
There has been 25.3 million recorded cases in total in the US. There has probably been more just they didn't get tested and were feeling fine. 421 thousand of those people have died. These numbers are huge and these are just from the US. When we look at the entire world there has been 99.9 million cases. Only 55.2 million recovered fully. There has also been 2.15 million deaths. That means that currently there are 42.65 million people worldwide with covid, a quarter of which are close to death, and some are probably already dead. In California alone there have been 3.21 million cases reported and 37,999 dead. So many people are dying and getting this disease and we don't have enough room in hospitals to help everyone who needs it. Some hospitals have created space for patients outside in their parking lot and thats still not enough. I personally find it crazy how people can look at these statistics and say that covid is a hoax and not wear a mask. Not only is wearing a mask protecting others but it is also protecting yourself. Most hospitals have had to turn into covid centers just to take care of people who have covid. Most of the patients end up dying. At this point everyone knows at least one person who has gotten covid and probably a few people who have died. If this isn't a sign of how bad covid is getting then I don't know what is. It is hard to look out at the world and see what a mess it has become. In the end I don't know if we will ever recover fully but as long as we try to stop covid as soon as possible we still have a chance of returning to the way it was. -

aftermath
The coronavirus was spreading quickly. with the usage of masks and hand sanitizer, it looked like nothing had worked. When we first had to lock down in late March, there were about 16 people with the coronavirus weekly. About 2 weeks ago it skyrocketed to 260,000 weekly cases. That is over a 200% increase in cases! Out of all those cases, I only knew personally a couple of people that had the virus. It seems to have gotten a little better but once we say that we know that it can go downhill again. I don't believe I have gotten the virus personally in any way and my parents are very good at keeping me and my siblings safe. The experiences throughout the pandemic have been very rough but we can always take the good out from a bad situation. -

COVID 19
It is January 2021 and Covid 19 has now infected almost 100 million people around the world. Although I have not experienced Covid first hand it still effects everyones day to day life, simple things like going to the grocery store or even school put us at risk. Covid 19 was difficult for everybody and my biggest struggle was making sure to keep in touch. I found it was easy with all the time at home to just hide in your bubble. Do online school, finish homework, go outside, watch some television and repeat. It started out like this but as time went on I realized the importance of getting out of routines and trying new things which significantly made my quarantine better. I facetimed friends, did zoom call secret Santa gift exchanges, walked the dogs, reached out to family. Although it was rough, This whole experience truly made me appreciate the small things and learn that going through times like these are really when everyone needs to come together and support one another. -

Statistics of Covid 19
In the state of California there is 37,499 deaths. There is 3.21 million cases in the state of California. World wide there has been a total of 99.9 million cases. 55.2 million of those people have recovered from the virus and 2.14 million people have died. I don't really know a lot of people that have Covid but I still have to be careful. Covid is crazy and has changed the whole world. I am not a fan of Covid and I wish it could go away. I wish we could live a normal life. Covid has affected a lot of people and it has changed a lot of people's lives. Everywhere you go you have to wear a mask or stay six feet apart it is really annoying. You have to get used to different. -

Wealthy couple chartered a plane to the Yukon, took vaccines doses meant for Indigenous elders, authorities said
A wealthy couple from Vancouver, Canada flew to a remote indigenous community in the Yukon to get the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine. The Yukon community was deemed a priority community for the vaccine due to the remoteness as well as the high number of elderly and high-risk residents. The members of the community are unhappy about the couple's actions and wish to see them punished. -

Symptoms
Covid-19 has a wide range of symptoms. Some people can become very sick and even in need of oxygen machines, while others would have no clue they've contracted the virus at all. For example, my. aunt , uncle, and cousin all tested positive and none of their experiences were alike. My uncle was almost in the hospital with difficulty breathing, loss of taste and smell, and more. My aunt was coughing but other than that fine. The baby was extremely cranky but without any other symptoms. This proves how wide the range of symptoms really are. -

Symptoms of COVID-19
Having been in a year of the corona virus pandemic actually was very helpful in learning about health and disease although it is a terrible disease. We have seen many symptoms with COVID such as loss of smell and taste as well as other flu symptoms. Fever or chills and coughing or shortness of breath are the most annoying symptoms I have seen. One of my friends had the corona virus and had no symptoms in other words asymptomatic. Fatigue and muscle or body aches are another flu like symptom that is very common. So over all I have learned that through COVID we should learn to stay healthy and clean and wash our hands. -

The different types of COVID-19 symptoms are Fever or chill, Cough, Shortness of breath, or difficulty breathing, Fatigue, Muscle or body aches, Headache, New loss of taste or smell, Sore throat, Congestion, or runny nose, nausea or vomiting, and Diarrhea. I do not know anyone close that has had COVID19 but it is hard for other families not to know what will happen. -

Corona Symptoms
At the start of this virus, I thought it was mostly respiratory problems. But after my dad tested positive, I knew what the symptoms were. At first, my dad was super fatigued and couldn't move like he used to. After that, he started to get very hot and feel like he had a fever. He didn't have respiratory problems. I think it is because Covid affects people differently. My dad had a slight cough when he had it, but that wasn't bad. But the main symptom that most people get from Covid is the loss of taste and smell. My dad lost both of those and it really annoyed him. I also read a story about an NBA player who lost his taste and smell, and I read about a lot of people who had the same thing. Luckily, my dad fought it off and is doing well. There are many symptoms for covid, but they all can be different for everybody. -

Symptoms
The symptoms that I heard about very frequently earlier during this pandemic were coughing, shortness of breath, fever and fatigue. These symptoms are all common symptoms of the virus. Other symptoms are headache, sore throat and chills. A lot of symptoms are symptoms that are seen with other sicknesses like influenza. One of the symptoms that is not associated with influenza is loss of taste or smell. One of my cousins experienced mild symptoms of Covid-19 such as sore throat, fever and fatigue. -

I never liked the idea of wearing masks. Everyone would give you dirty looks if you didn't. I still didn't care, if i was to get covid then so be it! Then eventually it was a mandate. My Discovery of the Virus
When I heard first heard about Covid-19 I was sitting in my room on my phone. I saw a video by the southern morning china post about a mysterious virus.. The Start
When i first learned about the virus i thought of it as just a surprise virus that would pop up in another country far away and it would be gone in a week. As it started growing and reaching other places in the world, I learned more and more about the virus and learned it was very serious. When I was told it originated from a street market in Wuhan, I wasn't surprised because it is a very poor filthy area where they sell meat. My opinions on this virus have remained constant, it is deadly, where a mask and do what you can to prevent the spread. -

The Beginning of Covid-19
There are many stories about how it all began but only one is correct. Although we don't have a confirmed answer about how it started everyone has their theories. In my opinion, I think that Covid-19 started in someone. I believe that someone caught the virus by touching bad bacteria. So, it got into one person now all this virus has to do to stay alive is keep moving from people to people which is exactly what it does. Since everyone is not yet immune to this virus it will just keep spreading, but hopefully, we can help prevent it from spreading. Alright back to the beginning of where this all began. You may be thinking how did the bacteria come to be in the first place, well the bacteria could have started by anything like and bad egg, dirty water, or someone could have even brought it over from another country. I believe that someone brought it over from another country. I think that this makes the most sense because we were not aware of the virus until they gave it to someone in the USA or even in another country. -

The Beginning of Covid-19
At first, I heard that the virus came from a snake that had been infected by a lab in China. When I heard this I thought that it sounded like something out of a movie. I did not think that the snake story is how it actually started because the virus had just begun and we knew very little about it so how would we have already known how it started. A few weeks later I found out that the virus came from a bat that someone ate in China. As I was discovering new things about the virus it seemed more and more like something out of a movie or a storybook. -

What I think of how covid began
they say the virus came from biological warfare, but that is impossible cause a virus cannot be bred, and people could tell if it was artificial, so that means that this virus either evolved from a different covid, or lung virus and adapted to the vaccines, or it was a virus that was originally from a different species and got on a human and evolved over a long time. However, the first option means that vaccines are quickly being evolved and adapted over because of overuse and that other viruses could follow, and the second means that viruses evolve faster than we think and exotic animals are dangerous in regards to their sicknesses and viruses. -

The cause of the Cornavirus?
There have been many different theories on what caused covid-19 many of which are ridiculous ideas. A few of these include bats, 5G cellphone towers, pangelions, and genetic modifications. However, I think that the coronavirus is a regular strand of virus that mutated normally to make it harder to stop allowing it to spread rapidly across the world. This has happened before in several different viruses and pandemics before including yellow fever and polio. This is what I believe is how covid-19 started however I could be completely incorrect and this is just my opinion. -

The Cause Of the Pandemic
I personally don't believe there is one person to blame or one specific start of the virus. Yes, it had to have first started somewhere, but because it spread so quickly it's hard to narrow it down to just one specific starting point. I've heard all the different theories of what "truly" caused the virus, but I believe it started with a few people and it then spread quickly from person to person. Because it was a mutation disease no one had the antibodies to fight it off quick enough to not spread it or carry it with them. Since we also don't know where it truly began or even when there is really no way to find the original cause of this virus. -

The cause of Covid-19
I think the cause of Covid-19 is a food item. Near Japan, they eat a lot of things that probably shouldn't be eaten, and if you don't cook it right it can have bacteria still on it. Actually, most animals haw viruses that their body they can handle that humans can't. And that is how I think the virus started, from something on an animal. -
2021-01-11
virus
I think The cause of the virus is definitely because of people interacting with animals, because a virus needs a creature with a cell to live with, an animal is the best choice, because most of them live with humans. The cause is probably someone kissing an animal or eating animals. The virus is able to get through the blood and make the first person sick, when the virus is in the human body, it changes, and becomes easier to spread, then there’s more and more people getting infected. -

The Origin of COVID
I was first told that COVID-19 was started because of bat soup that was commonly sold in Asia. Bats are known to carry many diseases and I was originally not surprised by the cause of this virus. However, I now know it was a man-made virus and was developed and let loose in a lab. With this information, I thought it was a lot different than bat soup. I was a little surprised at hearing this information, but it was starting to make more sense over time. The origin of this virus is now known to me and I now know that we need to be more careful when experimenting. I also know that we need to prepare for other pandemics in the future. -

The Beginning of Covid-19
During the Genesis of this Pandemic, I heard that this pandemic came from bats. I was a little skeptical when people told me this. So I had the urge to look it up. After looking it up I stumbled upon that the cause of this Pandemic is "That they all came from bats." After Asia, it soon navigated to Europe and across the world, coming to our home, America. I also learned that this virus attacks the respiratory system. Whether it be the upper respiratory tract (sinuses, nose, or throat), or the lower respiratory tract (lungs, windpipes), this virus would barrage both. -

The Origins of Covid-19
When I first heard about Covid-19, I knew that it came from Wuhan, China. I didn't know how it suddenly appeared, but many people think it had to do with bats. I didn't want to believe it, but there was no other theory that seemed somewhat normal other than bats. After a few weeks, when people were determined to find out why this virus came into our lives, I heard a bizarre thought that people made it in labs. I feel like people are getting so eager to know where it came from, they decided to make crazy ideas. The more the virus spread, the more theories came about the origins of the virus. -

Taiwan Went 200 Days without a Local Transmission
Despite its close proximity to China, Taiwan just passed 200 days without a local transmission of COVID. The article states, "Taiwan has never had to enact strict lockdowns. Nor did it resort to drastic restrictions on civil freedoms, like in mainland China. Instead, Taiwan's response focused on speed. Taiwanese authorities began screening passengers on direct flights from Wuhan, where the virus was first identified, on December 31, 2019 -- back when the virus was mostly the subject of rumors and limited reporting." Taiwan's geography also helped its control of the virus. Being an island in the Pacific help it regulate the flow of people coming in and out. -

Covid-19 in One Word: Present
I was on Spring Break during my senior year of high school when my school closed because of covid. They said it would be closed for one week, then two, then a month, then until next fall. No one knew what was going to happen. How will classes work? How will finals work? Will we have graduation? Can we go to college? What's gonna happen? The virus itself is scary and intimidating, but arguably more so is the uncertainty it brought to everyone's life around the world. No one could answer all of our questions. No one knew what would happen, and still, no one knows what the future holds. This uncertainty caused fear in almost everyone. Not knowing what will happen or how things will turn out, is a very uneasy feeling. This also caused fear. Now, this was a dangerous thing; fear weakens the immune system. As soon as I understood this, I realized I could not live this way. I needed to change my perspective or I would fall into the dark hole of fear of the unknown. So I decided to accept what was, let go of what was not, and be what is. I decided to focus purely on the present. This did not come quickly or easily. Honestly, I am still having to choose daily to focus on what I can control in my life at this moment. Every day is different. Some days I smile into the sun without a care of what the world will throw at me. Other days, I sit in bed wondering what could possibly go right. But despite it all, I remain in the present, the only place to truly be. This is why instead of thinking of everything covid has caused me to miss or how long it will last, I am focusing on the opportunities I have now, the new connections I can make, and the ways I can live in spite of this pandemic. That is why my one word for Covid-19 is present. Although covid may be horrible, it offers us the gift to learn how to live in the presence of uncertainty. -

Masks may reduce viral dose, some experts say
Many Researchers have known that masks can prevent people from spreading viruses to others. Dr. Monica Gandhi, an infectious disease physician made the argument that people wearing face coverings will take in fewer coronavirus particles. They have found the more virus in the nasal plume, the likelier the people were to get infected and experience symptoms. Some researchers have estimated that about 40 percent of coronavirus infections do not produce any symptoms. But when people wear masks, the proportion of asymptomatic cases seems to increase. Wearing a face covering doesn’t make people impervious to infection, but these trends could make a milder disease, reducing deaths. -

Clinical Infectious Diseases Ryohei Hirose et al., (2020) Survival of SARS-CoV-2 and influenza virus on the human skin: Importance of hand hygiene in COVID-19 https://academic.oup.com/cid/advance-... ●プレスリリース:京都府立医科大のHP ヒトの皮膚上に存在する新型コロナウイルスの生存期間を解明 https://www.kpu-m.ac.jp/doc/news/2020... The research team at Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine discovered that the new coronavirus, compared to influenza virus, survives for a longer time on human skin. This is (graph shown on the screenshot) a graph showing how the amount of virus that is viral on the human skin surface changes over time. Red represents the new coronavirus and blue represents influenza A virus. According to the research team, it was revealed that the new coronavirus survives on the skin for about 9 hours. This is about five times longer than the influenza A virus. Assistant Professor Ryohei Hirose, Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine stated "By touching something with a virus with your hand, then touching your throat, mouth, or eyes, you will be infected by it. The evidence that the virus lives long on your hands means the higher you will be exposed to the virus and thus I think it's better to think that the risk of infection will increase. " Meanwhile, the research team also evaluated the disinfecting effect of ethanol with a concentration of 80%. According to the research, the virus was completely inactivated by disinfecting with the 80% ethanol for 15 seconds and it "demonstrated the importance of hand sanitizer for the new coronavirus". Assistant Professor Ryohei Hirose, Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine stated "If you use an ethanol disinfectant, Although the virus lives longer (on the skin), I don't think we need to worry too much. However, the fact that the virus survives longer means it is hard to figure out how an individual got infected. For example, if you the virus was on your hand for only an hour, It may be possible to track down the cause of infection and the cause of transfer to another person, but the infectious virus can remain on the hand for 7, 8 and 9 hours, and it is hard to tell what you touched that had the virus and where you got the virus from. Recently, there are negative views on people how got the virus, but looking from the point of view of infection via contact, it is difficult for an individual to put in the effort only, and I would like people to be more kind to them.” -

Trump used “Chinese Virus” on his social media
I always look through different social media to be aware of anything that might affect me as an international student from China. Donald Trump’s Twitter is one of them, and there are multiple posts from him using the term “Chinese Virus” which worry me. For clarification, I do not agree or disagree with this post from Donald Trump. It is only educational and worrying for me to see following arguments from different people around the world, including U.S. and China. Both sides are attacking and insulting each other over who should be responsible and extend to political/cultural/social issues, disregarding the reliability of these issues. -
