Americans adopted millions of dogs during the pandemic. Now what do we do with them?
As one of many people who adopted a pet during the pandemic, this article resonated with me in many ways. It discusses how people transitioning from remote work at home and returning to the office are trying to ensure that the change is smooth for their newly acquired pets as well. Many of the pets – especially dogs – are not accustomed to being left along for lengths of time and are experiencing separation anxiety. As a result, some pet owners are trying to ensure that their animals have care while they at work. Unfortunately, this is easier said than done due to overbooked facilities and some animals with behavioral issues due poor socialization as a result of the pandemic. This article does a nice job capturing some of the struggles pet owners are experiencing now as they attempt to return to normalcy and some of the services available to keep them happy and occupied as they adjust. -

Charleston Animal Society working to get exotic pets adopted as shelters hit breaking point
NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Thousands of animals across South Carolina are in need of adoption including some more exotic options you may not think about taking home with you at the Charleston Animal Society. “Right now, we have a bearded dragon which is a very cool lizard and they have special needs, special diet as well as two bunnies, and two guinea pigs, so that’s a lot of animals that are extra care at the Charleston Animal Society as well as needing homes,” said Kay Hyman who is the director of community engagement at Charleston Animal Society -

Exotic Pets and Reptile Gain Popularity in Australia
According to the article, Australia is experiencing an increase in exotic pet popularity during the pandemic. With people having more time and resources, the demand for pets, in general, is on the rise. The fear of reptiles exhibited by Generation X is not there in younger generations, so demand for these cool and unusual creatures is on the rise. -

Remote Learning During COVID-19
During the quarantine, we still had to go to school, so we switched to remote learning. Using a meeting application called Zoom, we could talk to each other and continue our classes. We would start every day at 8:00 and end every day at 2:45. Our classes were divided into A days and B days. Half our classes were on A days, and the other classes on B days. We would get breaks between classes which was a total plus. However, we also had to adapt to something new and strange. It was hard but a great learning experience. Overall, online learning was hard to get used to, but it will be a useful skill to know in the future. -

Adding a family member during a somber time
After two recent deaths of our pets and the ability to be home 24/7, we decided to foster-to-adopt a kitten. His name is Kedzie, intentionally named after the Chicago street. My family is comprised of three busy adults with varying schedules, so now we are able to spend genuine time with him. Introducing Kedzie has also brought my family closer since kittens are a lot of work! -

Quarantine Companion: 6-week-old Puppy Ace
Most animal shelters are short staffed due to the virus, making it difficult to take care of all of the animals. The public can help by fostering and adopting dogs from their local animal shelters. With most of the population staying at home, it can get lonely, and what better way to cure that empty space with a furry friend! I've recently adopted a 6-week-old pitbull puppy named Ace (pictured). He's definitely made these difficult times more bearable and brightens my day up everyday. If we have to spend our days quarantined, I'm glad I'm with him. -

China's Animal Shelters Can't Cope With the Number of Pets Abandoned Due to COVID-19
This is a story published by Time magazine. Due to misinformation and fear that COVID-19 could be spread via animals, a substantial number of pets in effected Chinese cities have been abandoned or euthanized. Animal shelters in the country report they are overwhelmed with the number of animals which now need care. Current research suggests that pets are unable to contract the COVID-19 virus, but fear and panic have gripped the citizens of the nation.
