Marci LeMonnier Oral History, 2021/10/05
As her parent, it was interesting to ask my daughter questions about the pandemic and hear her responses. As a family, we were really lucky to stay healthy and be able to spend a lot of extra time together. I've transcribed the interview in the attached Word file. -

Rules of Covid
The rules during covid had a great effect because it forced me to not be able to breath because I had to wear a mask. There was a rule that we had to quartile and I did not like that and it messed up my head. It was so boring. We also had to social distance for 6 feet and that was not fun. -

Consider some of the rules or procedures that you have to follow, and tell your feelings about them.
A lot of the new rules I have to follow, I dislike them. They make life a lot more boring and add to all the horrible aspects of life. I am not able to do many of things I was before, such as go to amusement parks or hang out with large groups of people. Not being able to do sports has also been unpleasant. Without them, life has been quite boring. Those were some of my favorite things to do, and I hate that I can not do those things anymore. However I am more than willing to follow these rules to help my fellow citizens stay safe. -

Rules
The first really big change that happened was the masks. For the first month or so it was really hard to breath but I have gotten used to it. I also couldn't leave my house for a couple months and the only time i left my house was to go to the grocery store and I couldn't leave the car. I felt very happy to even just go into the car. Staying in the house for that long got kind of boring though. -

Procedure during COVID-19
During COVID-19, there are many procedures you have to follow. We had to stay inside our houses. It has been about a year-long process. At first, it was fun adapting to a new lifestyle, but after a while, I wanted to go to places and it was starting to get boring. However, I was able to talk to my friends over the phone and through a chatting application called discord. Another procedure was staying six feet apart. With friends, this was not so bad of a rule, but with family, it is always nice to be able to hug your loved ones. However, we would use air hugs and it was kind of fun. Overall, COVID-19 procedures were fun at the start, but over time, they would get boring and we had to find new ways to get around it. -

The rules and procedures of Covid 19
Because of Covid, we have to wear a mask if we go anywhere besides our house. I personally do not like wearing a mask at all and I think they are hard to breathe in and very annoying. We also have to social distance from other people at places like the grocery store. That means the stores can only have a certain number of people in them at a time. I think social distancing isn't a bad idea can it help with having germs from one person not spread to another. In the beginning of covid, we had to quarantine which means we couldn't leave the house unless it was necessary like going to the grocery store. I hated quarantining because it was very boring and I wanted to see my friends. Now we don't have to quarantine and we can see people. Also now all retail shops are open were in the beginning only grocery stores were open. -

Remote Learning
Learning virtually was not normal but we had to make it the norm. We were used to having everyone at school bunched up with no mask on. Now we were online in the comfort of our own homes looking at a screen with every student. I started to like online school. Siting with no dress code, being able to play video games like Call of Duty and NBA 2k in between classes. Eating whatever whenever we want and we enjoyed it. Until we all changed our minds and went crazy over the fact that everyone wanted to go back. An hour and 30-minute classes sitting in the same place with over amount of work to just take a picture and submit online. We took advantage when we were at school playing basketball at break and going to practice after school. We had to stay at home with nowhere else to go except grocery stores and the McDonalds drive-through. Everything was starting to get boring and we knew we couldn't stand these rules anymore and it was driving us insane. -

My Virtual Experience
During COVID-19 my school participated in virtual learning. It was not a very great experience considering we had to sit at our computers all day. I became so bored that I started downloading games on my phone and sometimes would beat them before school ended. All I could describe it as would be boring. It was the same thing over and over and it started to feel robotic. It was like an inescapable prison. Day after day of the same thing over and over I just couldn't take it. Eventually I started to realize that the pandemic was becoming more and more political based and I Realized it wouldn't end anytime soon. -

Virtual Learning
I didn't have too many problems with virtual learning other then how much more boring it was compared to regular school. the only good thing is that e would get more break time if we finish work early so i would get a lot more free time then I regularly would. but the classes were basically me just sitting there. there also a lot less interaction with people that was not virtual. -

While virtual learning from home my experience was very interesting it wasn't fun but it was also really boring sometimes. My routine would be to wake up grab breakfast grab my computer and started zooming online. I once did school in Utah which was pretty fun. The benefits of being online were probably being able to wear sweatpants all day and eating food when I wanted to and also probably not waking up as early and the obstacles of being online where I felt like I didn't get the full feel of being at school because we were virtual learning and also I couldn't see any of my friends. -

Virtual Learning
For my routine, I would usually wake up about 5 minutes before class had actually started. Between classes I just laid on my bed, doing whatever on my computer like games, youtube, but never homework until the next class. Then at lunch I would go downstairs to eat whatever was ready or anything my dad or mom had gotten. Eating lunch would usually take me about 15 minutes and then afterwards I went back upstairs to take a nap for the remainder of the time. Everything felt so slow and so boring and I felt like I wasted my time. The benefits of virtual learning are only not having to wake up at 6:30 and being able to stay home. The cons were it was boring, I had no motivation for anything, and probably just everything mentally and emotionally sucked. I just did whatever I was supposed to, and then maybe baseball practice after school. That was mostly all I did. -

My experience with remote learning
Learning remotely was a lot different than learning at an actual school. I didn't like learning virtual very much and I like learning at school much better. However, there were some benefits like sleeping in and having longer breaks. I did not like doing everything on my laptop because it is not good for your brain and it makes your eyes really tired. My days were very boring and I didn't get to socialize with my friends. I stayed home all day and most of my day was spending time on my laptop or phone. On a normal day, I would wake up and then get ready and then get on my laptop and do school and eat lunch and then stay home for the rest of the day. -

Covid Christmas
On Christmas morning of 2020, we had an unsusually... boring Christmas. We would usually have family over for the holidays, or we would go and visit. This time it was the four of us, My father, mother, my younger brother, and me. My brother and I entered the living room where our Christmas tree was displayed, We had quite a few presents under our tree this year. So my brother and I took our turns and opened gifts. One of my Uncles would usually be so frustrated with all the wrapping paper on the ground when presents were being opened. He wasn't here his time, so everytime trash was being picked up my brother would say "It's the ghost of our uncle....." When the presents were opening my brother and I were bragging about what we got, and then our Christmas morning was essentially over. Since we didn't have family over thisyear we invited a few friends to come over since they didn't really have much to do either. They came over and we had quite a bit of fun the rest of the day. Although it wasn't as lively as Christmas with our family was. We then sat down to eat dinner which was prime rib, greens, macaroni and cheese, shrimp, and dinner rolls. We later on went to bed as nothing else had to be done. -

Christmas
Christmas day was different for me because we didn't have any extended family over. Our extended family usually brings food and we play board games and stuff. I always just hang out with my cousins too. My mom says they love spending time with me so I decided that I wanna spend even more time with them than i already have been, except not recently due to covid.. This time, most of what I did was just boring stuff. I did still hang out with my family but it was just less festive and we all felt a little more exhausted. I did grill short ribs though, they were really good and I'm actually really glad I did that. But I really burnt some to a crisp and they just crumbled apart if I tried to pick them up. I couldnt see if they were cooked well or not because the fire was too big. I also built a robot which was one of my Christmas presents and it took me about 3-4 hours to do, I still have to try and program it though and assign which buttons do what on the remote controller it came with. I think I'll do that this weekend since I really wanna figure it out, I've just been a bit too lazy with it and never got to programming. But other than that i just talked about football and food with basically everyone. Although it was exhausting, it was still fun to do since it was different. -

Covid-19
It was the night before March 13, 2020, and I was in my room listening to music; when my mom got an email saying that we were going to be doing online school for two weeks. I was really excited to not have to go to school, and that I got to stay at home. I wasn't shocked because people at my school had been talking about us having to stay at home, but I definitely can say that I wasn't really aware of what about to happen. The next day at school we were just going over how online school was gonna work, and our new schedule and whatnot. The following week was our first week of online school, and I'd say most people like myself enjoyed it. I was glad that I didn't have to wake up early, and I got to stay in sweatpants all day. The funny thing about lockdown is that nobody really knew how long we were going to be doing it. We thought it was really only going to be about 2 weeks. Soon after we finished our second week of online school, we got another email saying that we would be doing school from home for longer than we expected. Throughout April, everyone started to become really bored at home, and nobody could go out because all the stores were closed. Most people rarely even went to the supermarket. I was extremely bored, and spent most days doing nothing after school was over. Lots of people also started to get sick of zoom and I'd say about more than half the school was started to get annoyed with online school, including me. The only interesting thing to do was watch tv, and the amount of quarantine memes was getting to be a lot. Soon after April, everyone thought that we'd be going back in may, but sadly we didn't and the following month of quarantine was really when people started losing their minds. Everyone was so sick of lockdown, and literally did nothing all day long. I found myself just watching tiktok's and YouTube 24/7. The following month of June people were even more bored but luckily things started to open up again like clothing stores, restaurants, even the mall. I just assumed that quarantine was over, and that things would go back to normal. Until, a few weeks later when they started closing things back up in L.A.(which is where I live). The worst part is that we were supposed to be going back to school in August, and now everyone was concerned that it wasn't going to happen. A few days before school started we were notified that we sadly weren't going back on campus. We all were sad, but we just assumed that we'd be going back after halloween, or the election (neither of them happened). I was so incredibly bored and honestly really confused about life in general. In the first 3 months of school. I hated online learning, and I had lost all of my social skills, and I had literally run out of things to watch on tv. Finally, a few days after the election my mom got an email that we were going back to school. I was excited to be going back, but also nervous. My school had started thing about a month earlier called wellness camps where we would go on Wednesday with our class and so some activities with our classmates just for an hour. Even just then, it felt super awkward to be back at school, so at this point nobody even knew how to talk to each other since it had been so long since we'd seen people from school. It's currently mid-december and we are going back soon. I hope things will get better soon:) -

Perspective of how I see covid
So when this whole thing started people knew what it was but no one really thought of it. Nothing really changed besides that people started to use sanitizer and things like that to stay clean. After a while there were rumors that things were going to close down. Then those rumors became true, school started to go online and everything started to close down. People were buying toilet paper and necessities and it was hard to find those things in any stores, masks were mandated and everything was closed and we were on a mandatory lockdown. I am a person that loves going to restaurants and taking out food just wasn't good, so i was trying to make food a lot at my house and I have almost burnt down my house multiple times. Life was really boring and you couldn’t see friends or family. U would facetime with relatives and friends all the time because of this. That is basically what happened from my perspective of the pandemic. -

My life before Covid
Before Covid i was at school, playing sports, seeing friends, watching movies, going out to eat and other normal things. I then heard the news of a virus in China but didn't think much of it. Then i heard the news of it spreading across the world and they brought up the idea of online school but i thought that would be too good to be true. My school then anounced that it would happen and we had a long weekend as the teachers prepared for online school. we finally started and I thought it was the most amazing thing to do school from home. I luckily got a haircut before everything closed. Now I would like to get back to school because doing it online is very boring and i want to talk to friends again. -

My COVID Thanksgiving
For my COVID Thanksgiving, I was able to drive 7 hours to see my cousins who I haven't seen in a while. We cooked a small meal and all ate it together on Thanksgiving day. We weren't allowed to have any friends over and we weren't allowed to leave the house that often. In the end it was fun but it got boring from not being able to do much. -

The Start of Covid-19
When I first heard about the Corona virus I didn't think it was a big deal. I thought that scientists would find an antidote and it would go away after a few weeks, but I was very wrong. The first time I realized COVID was a big deal was when school was canceled. At first I thought it was cool, we were gonna get a few weeks off of school, but what i didn't realize was that we would be quarantined for over 10 months. Everything started closing, restaurants, movie theaters, and sports. We switched to online school which was very hard. The school work was easier but many students had no motivation anymore. it was very annoying to have to stare at a screen all day. The Corona virus pandemic was very boring time to live in. -

Covid-19 Mental Health Effects
Not necisarily a story just the experience of me and the people around me. During the lock down, a lot of my friends' mental health, myself included started going down. Our day to day life was unexciting, boring, and for whatever reason, negative emotions felt amplified. Not being able to see friends anymore, not going to actual school, not interacting with actual people made us feel real lonely. At least thats the way I felt. -

Adventures During the Epidemic
During the pandemic, we could only stay home every day. We could not go out at all, and every day is so boring. We studied and played on our phones a lot, but even now playing on our phones is boring. What I remember vividly is that during the outbreak, I tasted all the ice cream at the supermarket. One of the flavors tasted disgusting and made me vomit. It had onions, meat floss, milk, and cumin. The taste is unforgettable. -
