Tipsy Tales
We spent 2 and a half years building the [Philippines'] first immersive theater on Filipino Folklore. We ran for an amazing six months serving thousands of locals and tourists alike. We had a lot of dreams for the company. We wanted to export multi-sensory interactive theatrical experiences on Filipino culture to the world. We wanted to make people happy. The pandemic had shut down both live entertainment and the tourism industry. We could no longer afford to keep it running in the new normal. When we had to close our production, it was heart breaking. Everyone knows how hard it is [to] open a business, but few people talk about he kind of grief that comes with closing one. For a while, it felt like I had a lost a child. So young and full of potential that died before it's time. There was a pain to losing something you've worked so hard to grow from the ground up. But at the end of the day, we are grateful for the chance to have brought a dream to life, even just for a short while. Dreams are our greatest rebellion against these uncertain times. My greatest hope is that we never forget that in the darkness, we can be our own light. -

Fierce competition in the marketplace
A meme posted about the cutthroat labor system in Peru, it's true that there's a lot of competition in certain sectors. In some cases, vendors barely make a profit because everyone is trying to offer the lowest price just to make the sale. I often had this conversation with my mother in law who sold clothing on consignment, I understand that consignment is a normal practice, but if you have to take a bus/taxi to someone's house 3 or 4 times to collect installments, the minimal profits you were making are essentially erased. Now that Peru is allowing some vendors to start selling again, it's once again a volatile and competitive environment because so many people have been without work and the basic necessities. -

Humans of Covid-19 AU: Haikal
“It’s very different. We’re not used to being this slow-paced. It feels really strange compared to the mayhem and craziness we usually work in. We’re still trying to stay busy with deliveries and stuff like that. We’re adapting as best we can, but sadly we did have to lose a few employees. We’re very grateful to still be open and getting customers, so I’m not complaining. Somehow there’s still that community feel, with regular customers continuing to come, but we aren’t seeing as many of the older faces. The staff are happy to be working and there’s lots of support going on. If all shops are forced to close, it would affect our family heaps - it's what we do. We’ve been doing it since 1992.” Instagram post on Haikal,, manager A1 bakery, and their experience during the pandemic, which was created by a psychology student living in Melbourne who was interested to hear about how COVID-19 was impacting on different peoples’ lives. -

Local Business Defeat
This is a picture of our venues calendar in May. All of the white out spots that you see are dates which couples either chose to cancel/postpone their wedding, or our venue staff was forced under mandates to tell them they had to reschedule. It has been a very messy battle that included two law suits and endless disappointment on our venue's end and especially on the couples end. COVID-19 is robbing people of their mile stones and we are so ready for it all to be over. This is also a good example of how detrimental COVID-19 has been on small businesses. The amount of money they have lost makes it extremely hard to stay afloat. -

Boarded up Bars in the Byward Market: Kinki
Many establishments in the popular shopping, dining, and bar area of the Byward Market have boarded up their front windows with plywood to reduce the chance of robbery while they remain closed due to the pandemic and restrictions of gatherings. The Kinki restaurant did not board up its windows but did place a sign informing any would-be robbers that "ALL CASH, BEER + BOOZE HAS BEEN REMOVED FROM THIS PREMISES." Many of the shops and restaurants which did not board up its windows has similar signs. -

Boarded up Bars in the Byward Market: the Aude Dubliner
Many establishments in the popular shopping, dining, and bar area of the Byward Market have boarded up their front windows with plywood to reduce the chance of robbery while they remain closed due to the pandemic and restrictions of gatherings. While some remain plain, or are painted black, other establishments chose to hire muralists to liven up the natural wood with images related to vibe of each bar. The Aude Dubliner Irish pub in the Market has some of its windows covered with murals depicting small items of significance for the pub in addition to plastered posters explaining the shut down. While there are more murals and posters around its corner, no photographs were taken out of respect for the homeless individuals taking advantage of the patio and overhang there as a place to sleep. -

Boarded up Bars in the Byward Market: Heart and Crown Posters - Keep Calm
Boarded up Bars in the Byward Market: Heart and Crown Posters Many establishments in the popular shopping, dining, and bar area of the Byward Market have boarded up their front windows with plywood to reduce the chance of robbery while they remain closed due to the pandemic and restrictions of gatherings. While some remain plain, or are painted black, other establishments chose to hire muralists to liven up the natural wood with images related to vibe of each bar. Some also plastered the wood with posters. One such poster display is on one of the boarded windows of the Heart and Crown pub not taken up by murals. Riffing off the popular Second World War posters in Britain which read "Keep Calm and Carry On" they read "Keep Calm and Shop Local" as well as "Keep Calm and Support Local Artists" in an attempt to create a sense of solidarity and duty when facing this crisis. They were created by the Byward Market itself. -

Downtown Boston Deserted
The beginning of Spring would normally have the North End and downtown Boston streets bustling with locals and visitors taking in the season after a long Winter. As the business shutdowns and stay-at-home advisories associated with the COVID-19 outbreak have gone into effect, the streets are very quiet with very few moving vehicles, and only a smattering of social distancing locals walking around. All the tourist and community sites are nearly abandoned as shown in this daytime photo. -

Support Your Local Auto Shop
With COVID-19 forcing numerous businesses across the nation to close, automotive shops such as this one in Wichita, Kansas, remained open during the lockdown, having been declared an "essential business" by Kansas Governor Laura Kelly's administration. Despite being open, local small businesses buckled under the strain of dramatically reduced customer traffic and revenue; a problem that still persists as Kansas, and the country, continue to face COVID-19's devastating physical and economic impacts. This sign along Tyler Road portrays one way that local businesses attempted to survive the economic malaise created by the virus's outbreak. As of May 4, 2020, the official end of Kansas's stay-at-home order, this discount appears to have been discontinued. Photo taken by Aaron Peterka -

A Conflicting Agenda
This image portrays two women in downtown Sacramento in protest of the shelter-in-place lockdown that Governor Gavin Newsom implemented. One women is seen holding a sign that portrays Governor Gavin Newsom as part of the Nazi regime or compared with Adolf Hitler. Another woman is seen in the foreground carrying a child on her back with another sign declaring that “All Businesses Are Essential”. Both women are protesting against business closures, unemployment, and being unable to return to the workforce. While with some jobs work is almost guaranteed like those who work for the state, other private and small businesses are suffering. On the other hand, while having the freedom to assemble and speak openly comes with its benefits, the sign depicting Gavin Newsom as a Nazi is quite extreme. The level of ignorance present in this photograph equates its offensive demeanor and deeply undermines the experiences of Holocaust survivors and the other millions of lives lost. For me fellow Sacramentans, seeing signs and descriptions such as these make me feel less proud of the town I live in. I thought the pandemic would help us realize our insensitive words and unnecessary slurs but it’s only reminded many people of a troubled past. The pandemic has truly brought a side of the American people that I have never seen and as a young student seeing adults act with rational thought makes me wonder where our world will be in the next few decades. If the world changes, so do we. Some people have a hard time overcoming adversity and the pandemic has exposed triggers amongst the American people. One of them being economic downfall. The image clearly represents what some individuals believe to be most important and valued in life. It seems that we have reached a point through this pandemic that we no longer prioritize the lives of each other but rather how much money is in the bank. In many ways, this is a reflection of what America was built off of. -

Empty Streets
Today is April 23rd 2020 My name is Dylan and I live in the small New England town of Marblehead, just 15 miles north of Boston. Marblehead is one of those small boutique towns that pride themselves on its rich history and position right on the ocean. However, due to COVID-19, Marblehead has effectively become barren and small businesses along our main road are closed until the foreseeable future. This road is usually busy and crowded with traffic, runners, dog walkers, street side parkers, and tourists. This has been the state of the town for weeks now and has been the cause of some small-town discussions online. The closing of businesses in town will be hard felt compared to many other towns and cities because Marblehead is against the establishment of chain stores (besides Dunks and Starbucks of course) and relies heavily on local businesses created by local Marbleheaders. This pandemic will be the cause of many financial issues in our town and as the U.S. remains closed, our town’s income from lobstering and tourism will likely be very limited. The town has also passed rules for those willing to shop, that we must wear face coverings to get our shopping done. And for walkers, walking around town has also been hampered by the closing of certain public locations, parks, and access to walkways connecting different parts of town. As for myself, I prefer to stay indoors for the time being due to our rather poor weather lately. -

small Masks businesses
It has now been a month or two into the pandemic surrounding my local area. Many local businesses are never going to open again because they have been out of business for too long. Walmart is also out of fabric because people have been making a living off of masks now. 3 of my co-workers are even selling and sewing masks. How interesting is it too that now people are selling them with specific designs like sports teams. I just bought my grandma a patriots mask the other week for $7. People come in all the time for masks since I work at a grocery store, to begin with, we never sold that many. Now we have people ordering them through my previously mentioned co-workers and picked up later. I didn't even think that these would be a business. -

Running on Hope
So theatre stopped. Everywhere. Broadway all the way to the community theatre in small towns. Shows that people put there blood, sweat, and tears into were postponed, rescheduled, then finally cancelled. They majority of theatre in the U.S. is community theatre. If a company doesn't put on a show, it could very well put them out of business. It's a business that needs an a crowd. Many companies are planning there upcoming season on hope. Hope that there will be a world to see the art they created. Online major companies have put out previous recorded operas, plays, and concerts in order to keep that spirit of art alive. And it seems to be working, for now. But we are a social species. I don't know if we can handle the separation. I hope we can outlast it. See, we are running on hope. -

The Struggle in Rural Communities
The COVID-19 pandemic is undoubtedly scary. We are currently faced with a time in which people are fighting for their lives, we can’t leave our homes, businesses are closed, and our lives have been completely uprooted. There is no doubt that this situation has affected every single person’s day to day life. However, from my personal experience I think that different communities are affected in different ways or perhaps hit slightly harder. Although everyone’s top priority at this time should be safety, I also think it is important to address the strain this pandemic is putting on communities like my own. The first week of March I drove 600 miles from South Carolina to Pennsylvania to go home and visit my family for spring break. Little did I know that I would end up being in Pennsylvania for the foreseeable future. My hometown is the epitome of a rural community. If you are not one of the few small business owners, a farmer, working for a natural gas company, or a factory worker in the next town over then you most likely live in poverty. Therefore, my community was already economically struggling before this pandemic hit. Once it did hit, the small businesses deemed nonessential were shut down, hours of operation for essential businesses have been cut back, and those who were already wondering how they were going to pay their bills now have absolutely no idea how they are going to survive heading into the future. -
