Match Day 2020
As the COVID-19 Pandemic has swept across the country many colleges have made changes to their celebrations and ceremonies. University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix annually celebrates their fourth-year medical students next steps into residencies with Match Day. On Friday, March 13, 2020 medical students across the country opened sealed envelopes to discover which residency program they would be going to this June. University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix traditionally celebrates this in-person signature event with flash mobs, confetti, streamers and special contraptions that house these envelopes. This year, the college found a way to have all the students, families, faculty and staff celebrate this event virtually. I wanted to share this video with you as a reminder that even during a pandemic, good things do happen; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0B5ozKpW_60. Congratulations Class of 2020 and best wishes for a wonderful future. -

Residents of Rocinha favela show their thanks to health teams working to prevent the spread of COVID-19
This film shows residents of the Rocinha favela in Rio de Janeiro celebrating health workers by clapping, cheering, and flashing the lights of their homes. The captions reads: "Residents of Rocinha applaud and flash their lights in gratitude to the whole medical team that is dedicated to the prevention of the coronavirus. IT WAS BEAUTIFUL!!! Film by a resident." The entry is tagged with #COVIDnasFavelas, a hashtag documenting the efforts of local residents to provide food and care in the absence of federal, state, and local resources and leadership. As the Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro continues to deny the severity of the pandemic, the most marginalized communities are crowd-sourcing food to help those forced to stay home. Most workers and families have few or no savings to draw on. "Moradores da Rocinha aplaudiram e piscaram as luzes em agradecimento a toda equipe médica que está dedicada na prevenção do coronavírus. FOI LINDO!!! Vídeo de morador #COVID19NasFavelas" https://twitter.com/jornalfalaroca/status/1241194834364444673?s=20 #COVIDnasFavelas #NJIThist380 -

Friendships in the times of COVID-19
During the times of COVID-19, the relationship dynamics between roommates evolve as they shift from being mere roommates to teammates in the battle of staying alive and healthy. COVID-19 demands negotiating new rules, new ways of communicating, new responsibilities, and importantly: new lasting friendships. It is interesting to see how the pandemic both tests and strengthens the bonds between roommates as we navigate responding to each other’s needs. COVID-19 has presented a series of challenges with one of the negative impacts of social distancing, including coping with loneliness. The privilege of living with friends helps boost morale and mental health as we are constantly reminded that we are going through this not alone, but together. Pictured is my roommate celebrating her twenty-second birthday on our back porch on a sunny day in April. Although it is not how she imagined she would spend her birthday, friendship and company offer a silver lining during the coronavirus pandemic. #DePaulHST391 -

Happy Birthday and the Fear of Covid19
Today was my dad’s 59th birthday and it was crazy that we couldn’t really celebrate. This whole Covid19 feels like a bad dream or a scary movie to be honest. It is also Easter and it is strange that we couldn’t do our typical events and Easter egg hunt for our nephews. It is so tragic turning on the news and seeing how many people have died from this terrible virus. This whole experience doesn’t even feel real at times. I feel lucky that my family is still safe, but I worry about my brother who has to work every single day surrounded by customers. I fear he will get sick or my sister in law. I am lucky that I have limited contact with people, but my job still requires me to meet others. It is scary how people have also reacted to this event and hoarded so much toilet paper and supplies. I am terrified every time I go to the grocery store to get supplies and food. There is never toilet paper or paper towels. Trying to find certain things such as meat or cheese or even eggs is close to impossible at my local grocery store. It is insane that there is not even a bottle of soap or any Lysol to purchase. I miss my nephews and I miss going to school. I am so lucky compared to so many others, but I am still terrified for the future. This feels like a scary movie or an episode of Doom’s Day Preppers.
