Joy on the Pavement
During Melbourne’s first lockdown in 2020, movements to bring joy to the few remaining active public spaces were organised over social media and among local communities. One trend was pavement art that encouraged the walker to “laugh”, “pick up some rubbish” and “strike a pose” on their permitted hour of exercise. These minor artworks expressed an optimism in community strength at the early stages of the pandemic; they expressed, too, a resilience in Melbourne’s identity as a city of art and culture. By the second lockdown in August 2020 the chalk had been washed away and there was little to replace it. Creating community from inside our own homes, it turned out, was much harder to sustain than anyone had imagined. Submitted for University of Melbourne HIST30060, Semester 2 2021. -

HIST30060: GREED SUCKS
I found this chalk slogan on the road hilariously neo-liberal. Absolutely, greed sucks - the way COVID-19 exacerbated wealth inequalities and ravaged communities disproportionately (due to lack of resources/access and over-policing) sucks. Yet, this chalked slogan was a simplification (or even armchair activist representation) of that reality and this made me chuckle. -

The One Where We Were Quarantine
This is a chalk drawing that my friends and I made when we learned we would not being going back to school. This was very difficult because of the fact we were seniors had didn't get all the special things our last year . We wanted to make our mark on the school in a way that would show the school how much we loved coming every day. We went to the school and made this in the parking spots we usually parked in every day. This ended up going on the local news and the school website. -

Hello Neighbors
After our governor ordered a lockdown, my children could not see their friends or classmates. In order to try to stay connected to our neighbors, we left daily messages in chalk so they could see them as they walked by. We also left our chalk so our neighbors could write messages in return. -

Chalk Day
This photo is important to me because we are in quarantine and it feels like a lot of negativity and it's kind of a way to show that "the sun will always come out tomorrow" that something good will come out of this. (inspired by Tangled) -

Chalk Art
This is some chalk art I created with my younger sister during the beginning of quarantine. Before we were stuck at home 24/7, I never would have thought to just go outside and color the driveway, or at least since I was 10 years old. Since the beginning of quarantine, I, and probably many others, have been seeking fun in lots of new ways. I personally have found myself turning to activities that I would typically do as a child. Although the pandemic has had quite the negative impact on the world, there is definitely some good that has come with it. I feel that many of us, including myself, have found ourselves outside in nature more than we had been before, as we are sort of forced to look for entertainment in different ways since we can’t be around many people at this time. When someone brings up the pandemic, it is usually something negative, so I thought this photo would represent one of the more positive aspects of quarantine. *Photograph of a drawing -

Teddy Bear Hunt and Sidewalk Chalk Art Become Popular Outside Family Activities for Children During COVID-19
Photograph collage shown is from Blanchard, Oklahoma where teddy bear hunts and sidewalk chalk art are popular activities for children to do with their families during COVID-19. The teddy bear hunt is nation-wide activity that was initially based off the book Going on a Bear Hunt by author Michael Rosen and illustrator Helen Oxenbury. Children are encouraged to spot teddy bears on walks with their families and participating houses place stuffed animals or drawings in their windows. Another similar activity that was easily spotted in the same neighborhoods in Blanchard, Oklahoma were detailed chalk art. Children draw pictures on the sidewalks in front of their homes or could view other home's artwork during family walks. Messages of hope or words of praise to essential workers for their dedications were seen as well. Each of the activities coincided with the rise of family-oriented outside walks that were becoming popular during the COVID-19 pandemic. Contributed by Clinton P. Roberts, curatorial intern for Arizona State University, HST 580. -

Chalk Heart Drawing
I found this chalk heart on the sidewalk outside of Heritage Elementary School in Traveler's Rest, SC. It made me smile and gave me hope to see it and it just felt important to pass along. So much of what ends up documented here is how life has changed. This reminded me that the important things haven't: joy and love and play are all still happening. -

Children's Chalk Artwork
I have noticed kids playing in our neighborhood again. Parents setting up cones in the street for games and kids riding scooters, all have been more prevalent than ever before. I decided to document this as best I could with a picture of our neighbor’s kid’s chalk artwork to show how even in dark times, people always strive to make the best of bad situations which is something I think we should always remember when looking back at this year. -

COVID Aid Offer in Chalk
The South City area of Saint Louis is a diverse, tight-knit community. It only makes sense that residents would go out of their way to assist each other during this difficult time. The residents of this home near the intersection of Arsenal St. and Gravois Rd. advertised resources in chalk writing on the exterior of the house, including a LinkTree website, toll-free helpline, and email account dedicated to helping those in need and connecting volunteers with service opportunities. There are also children’s chalk drawings of flowers and a rainbow on the exterior and of a rainbow and a pot of gold taped to the window. #DePaulHST391 -

Kids' Coronavirus Driveway Art
With the stay-at-home order and school closures in effect, we see more children and youth playing outside. A popular activity in our neighborhood in South Tempe is to make chalk drawings on driveways. At this house, the kids chalked out their message to stay home and stay safe (along with an Easter egg). -

Sidewalk art from some of the children in my local neighborhood expressing optimism during a time when it is in short supply.
As children in Orange County have been out of school, they have been putting in time and effort to try and brighten the mood around the neighborhood. Connecting through Chalk
Chalk messages on a green way path. For miles this greenway path to park and nature area had sporadic messages through out with motivational and comforting sayings. I had noticed children going out to the path and leaving these messages for all to see. It was nice to read these things and know that while practicing safe social distancing not engaging in close conversation with other while on walks that others can communicate their feelings and connecting with others using only a few words. -

Uplifting Chalk Messages
This image shows uplifting messages written by children and adults in my hometown. It captures the feeling of my PA suburb currently; because kids are out of schools, most parents are working from home, and all social gatherings are cancelled, many families are spending time together outside. Some written messages we saw include "Keep going everything will come to you at the perfect time!" "Have an online Netflix party!" "Wash your hands!" and "We will get through this together!"
