  Not Everyone's Cup of Tea

  While looking for items to submit to this archive, I tried searching Pinterest for some humorous memes to add. After reading a lot of heavy articles, i felt a little humor was in order; only to be thwarted by Pinterest. After searching for "Covid19 humor, I received a message saying that pins relating to this topic often violate community standards guidelines and so, results were restricted to established health organizations... I guess gallows humor is not for everyone... I tried a google search for the same search term and came across a few things but this article stood out. It discusses the rise of 'dark' humor and how it can, in some cases, actually help those trying to cope with difficult subjects. It confirmed my suspicions that those of us who have a 'gallows humor' approach may have been on to something all along.

  The meme was created and posted on a Facebook group during April, and was part of a trend of memes predicting what terrible event will happen in the next month for 2020. The meme is comprised of two images taken from the show Avatar the Last Airbender, and contains a quote which has been changed to fit the memes theme. It shows the community online dealing with the pandemic through memes, but also highlights how tired people becoming because continued disasters throughout 2020. HUM402

  "NYPD Officer Hopes Black Teen Only Coughing Because He Just Choked Him"

  While the pandemic remains at the forefront of news coverage, in the beginning of May, a string of high profile murders made national news. In addition to the murder of Black jogger Ahmaud Arbery and a series of police shootings in Indianapolis that left three people dead just hours apart, reports from New York show that social distancing arrests have overwhelmingly and disproportionately impacted Black New Yorkers. This satirical article from the Onion, perhaps America's most well known satirical paper, uses dark and gratuitous satire to criticize police brutality in the time of COVID. Perhaps the most devastating line in the entire article is a quote from a fictional officer who says, "I promised my wife and kids that until this pandemic is behind us, I would just shoot black teens from a safe distance."
