HIST30060 Small business ownership during lockdown
My parents own a small restaurant, and as such, were largely impacted by Melbourne’s various lockdowns. The restaurant is located on the outskirts of the Yarra Valley, in a peri-urban region known for tourism. As such, the location of the restaurant is isolated from major townships and shopping complexes. We were open for takeaway at the start of the pandemic, however when the 5km rule was introduced (in metropolitan Melbourne residents were only allowed to travel a maximum of 5km from home) it meant that only our very near neighbours were permitted to pick up takeaway; remaining open was thus unviable. As we transition into a post-COVID world, my Mum – the manager – in consultation with other local restaurant owners has reflected on common anxieties about the spread of COVID-19 and the process of verifying/mandating that each customer is double vaccinated (as per state government legislation). Will we receive resistance from anti-vaxxers? Will these rules impact how many customers we receive? There are many unknowns. Pictured is the interior of the restaurant – which has been packed up for nearly a year now – and our check-in QR code which customers must scan before entering. -

Wide Range of Acceptable Socializing during Covid-19
This meme shows the four members of the "family" in the movie "We're the Millers" reacting to houseguests during Covid-19. The "Dad" says, "My houseguests won't come unless we wear masks!" The "Mom" says, "My houseguests won't come unless we text them our vax cards!" The "daughter" says, "Our houseguests won't come unless we've had a negative covid test in the last 48 hours!" And the son says, "You guys are having houseguests?" The meme represents the wide range of "rules" that people are setting for themselves during Covid-19. Where I live in Utah, there are no official rules right now except that mask mandates are banned in public schools. In public, most people are not wearing masks and very few students are wearing them in schools. This meme, although it describes having houseguests, represents the varying degrees that people are socializing in all venues: at home, restaurants, movie theaters, amusement parks, family reunions, etc. Some people are still very cautious while others are "back to normal." -

Santa Monicans Rediscover the Joy of Walking and Biking and Reclaim their Streets
As an architect and planner with a strong interest in creating sustainable communities, I have worked for years on promoting safer and lively streets which encourage walking, bicycling, outdoor activity and social interaction. Too often our streets prioritize moving and parking cars over all other activity. One of the most positive aspects of the Covid pandemic was the number of residents I saw walking and bicycling with their families. The Ocean Avenue bike lanes now enable cyclists to enjoy the ocean view instead of fearing being crushed by a tourbus or foodtruck. Another exciting development is the expansion of outdoor restaurants into curbside parking, parking lots or even previous auto travel lanes. The result is a much more lively streetscape, a safe way to enjoy a restaurant meal, and a great way to enjoy our perfect climate. Let's continue this trend of reclaiming our streets for people to walk, bicycle, scoot, dine, shop and mingle, by reducing the space we sacrifice to moving and parking cars. -

Safety at Teriyaki Ha Ha
At Teriayaki Ha Ha on Route 1, just across from Nease High School, staff erected a wooden frame with plastic sheeting hung from it to create a protective barrier. When you walk in the front door, your order is waiting on the table. Cash is put into an envelope or credit card taken in advance on the phone. Everything is no contact. Next door is a Papa Johns where staff had masks pulled down around their necks and I observed several people walk in without masks, revealing how widely safety protocol differs from one business to the next. -

Massachusetts Contact Tracing Log
At the restaurant that I work at, the host plays a larger role than just taking people to their tables. There is a designated “sanitation specialist” that clears the tables and wipes down the tables with peroxide and another liquid so that we can seat guests in an orderly manner. There is also the job of the main host to take down people’s phone numbers in case a coworker reports having COVID symptoms so that those in the restaurant can get tested for the virus. This connects to the civic purpose of history as this was one of the new contributions to the people in order to keep them, hopefully, safe from the pandemic and a need to reform how we think about our information in public spheres. I think that this item is something that “ helps illustrate something particularly significant about the year 2020”. This is through the tracking log as we’ve often seen people protest the government having our information as seen with the microchip scare with the vaccine, but this has become something of a norm at work. Every so often, there is that person that will give me a fake number or protest their information being leaked because “they will call us”, our only defense is that we get rid of the paper after a month before getting our manager. The blurb at the top does a better job at explaining than I do. -

University Campus Dining During Covid-19
With many indoor restrictions and social distancing rules to prevent the spread of Covid-19 cases, this year students have been choosing to dine more frequently outdoors rather than indoors. This photograph highlights how freshman year dining looked for me at Northeastern University during Covid-19. Although students are not allowed to be in large groups or eat in large groups indoors, many of us chose to eat just right outside of the dining hall. Luckily at Northeastern University's main dining halls International Village, there is a small green space park for students to gather, socialize, and eat together. This year Covid-19 has presented many difficult challenges, especially towards the reintroduction of education and a college school year. It's already hard to meet and make new friends as a freshman, but we try as best as we can to socialize wherever we can. In addition to eating, many activities and socials are also done outdoors to recreate the typical college experience in a safe manner. I'd say as students we are responsible or at least most of us try to be responsible because we are all looking forward to the day we can just be normal college students and get that normal college experience. -

Adapting the DiamondBack Café on campus
These are photographs taken of the DiamondBack Cafe at St. Mary's University-San Antonio in the era of COVID19. The DiamondBack Cafe was one of St. Mary's busiest student spaces prior to the onset of the COVID19 pandemic. However, much has changed at the DiamondBack Cafe since March 2020 As a resident student at St. Mary's University I have eaten in the DiamondBack Cafe almost every day, and I can attest to just how different it is to eat a meal there. The seats are now all socially distanced six feet apart, and there are signs sitting on the tables and taped to the tables reminding students to keep their social distance. Along with the changes implemented because of social distancing, getting meals has also changed drastically. Meal protocols have changed because of the pandemic. Students have the option of taking their meals back to their doors in styrofoam to-go boxes, or they may eat in the Cafe at one of the socially distanced tables. Also, students are no longer allowed to handle their food themselves, rather they are served by employees of the Cafe. Also, some food where that had previously been open food has been changed. For example, the sandwich station which used to be made to order, was for the majority of the semester, replaced by premade sandwiches in to-go boxes. Much has changed in the Diamond Cafe, and it feels different to eat there too. There have been a few times when I have been the only student in the Cafe, which is especially weird. However, everything that has been done is necessary to protect the health of students and faculty. -

What can we do?
This is just one example of the effects that Covid has had on people. WIth the summer coming to a close, the last real possibility to have any outdoor dining. But as the number of Covid cases continues to rise everyday the Governor decided to restrict indoor seating and placed curfews on how long business could stay open. Because of this many restaurants will have no choice but to close their doors. Leaving many people back on unemployment only weeks before the holiday season starts. Covid continues to change and effect everyone differently, unfortunately it does not seem like we will see the end of this anytime soon. -

Phase 2 Reopening - Restaurant Dining Inside
As reopening moved into phase 2, some restaurants decided to allow for dining indoors. This is Noodle City, a Vietnamese restaurant in Goleta. The seating used to be highly packed inside to maximize the number of occupants, but now features more indoor space to separate the guests. Previously it could be found to be packed at almost all times, but even though it is now legal to dine inside, people are still choosing to order take out. People are still cautious of the fact that the virus transmits easier indoors than outdoors. -

Santa Barbara City College Desolate Dining Area
Due to schools moving to online only education, there is no longer a need for dining services at schools. This is Santa Barbara City College's outdoor dining area, which has been stripped as maintenance activities have been cut back. Even though non students often come to the school to take walks and enjoy the scenery, the entire school is empty and devoid of people. -

Restaurants prepare to open decks, patios but warn "it's not going to make us money"
As more areas of PA open up after being locked down for the last ten weeks, restaurants are having to weigh the advantage of reopening. Restaurants in Central PA are not known for their outdoor patios and decks. Between the humid hot summers and the plentiful bugs, not many people eat outside here. With regulations restricting many restaurants to outdoor sitting only restaurants are having to consider new ways of serving the public. When it comes to food and beverages in PA the coronavirus has had a huge influence on pushing business owners to rethink their traditional business models. Finding myself intellectually challenged during this period of monastic existence (I can only read the great works of the world so many hours a day) I have decided to communicate with several circles of friends to place upon their shoulders the angst of my ennui. Hence the first issue of The Hermit Herald, which may or may never hit the news stands again. Within this erudite publication the dear reader will discover some true and helpful tidbits, some thoughtful musings and a good sprinkling of innocuous drivel. Proceed at your own peril. -
