2022-01-02Quarantine Post Lockdowns
HIST30060: This was a photo taken before dinner during my self quarantine at the beginning of this year, as I had come into close contact with my mum who had COVID on Christmas day. I was then promptly messaged by the Department of Health and Human Services to quarantine for the next week, which also meant I had to self isolate on my birthday (New Year's Eve). This dinner was the final night of that quarantine, in my apartment with my girlfriend and her dog, eating a dinner we had organised through having our groceries delivered for the first and only time. This quarantine reminded me and still reminds me of the presence COVID still has in our lives even in 2022, years on from the beginning of the pandemic and outside of lockdown restrictions. The virus still restricts us in ways we had not experienced before 2020. -

2021-07-20Troop 621 in the Mess Hall
This is a photo of some Scouts from Troop 621, in San Ramon, eating dinner at the Camp Wolfeboro mess hall. The Scouts have masks around their necks. The photo was found on the troop's public website. The photo is identifiable as being taken on July 20, 2021 between 6:15 and 7:00, because Troop 621 attended camp during the fifth session (July 18 to July 24) and ate B shift dinner from 6:15 to 7:00, and part of Tuesday night's dinner was stuffing and mashed yams, which are visible on the Scouts' plates. -
2020-12-01My Day
December 1, 2020 Over Thanksgiving break, I went to Saint Francisville and went hunting and had fun with my cousins. On the day before Thanksgiving, I shot my third deer and it was a doe that weighed 122 pounds and I was very excited. On Thanksgiving, we went to my grandmother’s house in Saint Francisville, which is about 10 minutes from our property. I ate turkey and ham and rice and gravy for lunch, and then I went and played with my little cousins. Later, we had a very good ice cream pie and then went home that night. On Saturday, we watched the Iron Bowl and watched Alabama beat Auburn 42-13, but it should’ve been 49-6. Then right after that we switched over to the Egg Bowl and watched Ole Miss beat Mississippi State. Yesterday we had basketball practice, and when I got home, my basketball shoes finally came in. They’re blue Kyrie low 3s. After school, I got a ride home with a friend because my sister had already left. I went to my friend’s house and just stayed there for a little while and more of my friends came there too. We played Madden and I beat my friend 35-8, and it was only the third quarter when he quit. At about 5:30, we walked to Circle K for snacks and it was so cold outside. I got a Rice Krispy Treat, Funyuns, and a drink, and then I went home and laid in bed and ate my snacks and had dinner and went to bed. -
2021-04-21T18Dinner and Hearts
As of yesterday, my two weeks was up and I am now "fully vaccinated" per the CDC guidelines. My wife got there Friday, and my mother has been fully vaccinated since February. Per the CDC, since we are all fully vaccinated, we can visit each other and not have to wear masks. We had Mom over for dinner for the first time since before the pandemic. After dinner we played a few rounds of hearts. I had to reacquaint myself with something that used to be "normal" before COVID-19. I was a bit rusty at playing cards, but I soon got back into it. It does not seem like that big a deal, but it was good for Mom to get out of her house for a while. It was good for all of us, and I am looking forward to more such evenings. -

When Covid is Over
When Covid is over I am going to see my grandkids in Washington State and paint my son’s house and then take my whole family out to dinner in a restaurant. When Covid is over I am going to dress like a rock star and play music in bars. When Covid is over I am going to keep the thrifty habits and good hygiene and good recipes that I learned during Covid. When Covid is over I am going to take my time browsing the hardware store and the supermarket. When Covid is over I am going to visit friends and have parties. When Covid is over I will be thankful that Covid is over. -
2021-01-19The Happy Little Chef
The media focuses a lot on the losses children are facing during the pandemic. And while I certainly would prefer that the virus was contained and my son would be able to attend school in person, take piano lessons with his piano teacher beside him instead of on a Facetime call, and play with a friend outside of his older sister, my six year old son is genuinely enjoying quarantine. I realize this is a privilege - we have a backyard, space, two working adults who can afford food and technology, and a live-in grandma who can help with any distance learning issues. But my son seems to be thriving in this much simpler and quieter life. We always did a lot together as a family, but we did not spend a lot of time actually at home. Now that we’ve been home together for over ten months, we have settled into this new life that involves my son helping my husband make dinner every night. And he LOVES it. It’s not as though he had never cooked before, but to be able to do it every night, side by side with his dad is an experience he did not have in our pre-quarantine life that was much faster paced and on the go. Many nights, the little chef will bring me a menu that outlines the dinner and asks for my order. He takes such pride in telling all of us what parts of the meal he was in charge of. He assures us he is both the owner and the “cooker” of the restaurant and that his daddy is his employee. When dinner is over, he asks to take my plate, and has recently become very interested in washing all the dinner dishes himself (no complaints here). I certainly long for the day that we can go back out in the world, but I feel very blessed that my son will be able to look back at this year with happiness, even in the midst of such a dire situation. -

An Unusually Quiet Holiday Season
Our family holidays consist of fun get togethers full of traditions we enjoy. Thanksgiving is loud, full of chaos and laughter. Christmas means the entire family at my house. We make a ton of food, eat, and open presents, have a Secret Santa and white elephant exchanges, which again are fun, loud and chaotic. At the end of the night we take a huge family selfie in front of the tree. This year it was just my husband, daughter and myself, no siblings, nieces and nephews, grandchildren, or great grandchildren. We didn't quite know what to do with ourselves after we opened presents so we watched movies all day then ate leftovers for dinner. My parents spent it alone for the first time since 1964. They were sad but they enjoyed reminiscing about their first Christmas as newlyweds. Although it was still a nice day, it wasn't the same. Once more, it reminded me never to take seeing family for granted. It is a precious gift. I hope and pray that this will be the only year we deviate from our family traditions. -

Remote Learning 2020
My experiences of learning online have been terrible. In the beginning I didn't try my best and I didn't do my work. I just have so many distractions online at home like my family coming downstairs and being loud because they don't realize I'm still in class. After a while, I started to get into a routine of waking up at 7:30 and going downstairs. Getting my computer ready and setting up my workspace (aka the dining table). Going to class and after school doing my homework. Clearing off the table for dinner and going to bed. -

Covid Holidays
My family normally meets at my parent's house for Christmas every year with my Dad's infamous filet minion dinner. However, I have not been there in-person for the past decade or so because I always work on Christmas. Unfortunately (or I suppose fortunately), paramedics are needed to staff ambulances on holidays. Though I did not work on Christmas this year, I was still unable to go to the family party due to Covid. The biggest difference this year for me was that for the first time, I was not the only family member who participated in the holiday party remotely. This is not to say that I was happy that my family could not get together like normal, but there was something oddly comforting to not being the only person on zoom/whats app/etc. during the holidays. Everyone prepared their own dinners at home, we jumped on zoom and did a family toast and showed each other our respective meals. We all logged off to eat and then jumped back on to continue to celebrate the holiday and do the annual secret Santa exchange. Overall, it was a more normal holiday for me than for the rest of my family, but it was overall a great Christmas. -

Covid Christmas
This year was way different than normal. I normally love Christmas/winter and I tried to enjoy it but it was very difficult. After Christmas day my Aunt, Uncle and grandparents (on my mom's side) would come stay at our house or we would go to my grandparents. This year we did not see then. On Christmas Eve my Aunt, Uncle and two younger cousins (on my dads side) would come over all evening/night. They decided not to come over this year so we briefly exchanged gifts and talked. 8:00am on Christmas morning my mom woke me up. My parents and grandparents (on my dads side live with us) where already up. My older brother woke up shortly after. We opened our stockings at the fire place then went to the living room with the Christmas tree. We opened the other present there and talked for a few after. We all went to our rooms to use the new stuff we got. I was kind of sad that Christmas was over because it barley felt like Christmas. Later that night we had Christmas dinner. As much as I tried to enjoy Christmas and the long break from school the vibe wasn't the same and was slighting disappointing. -

Christmas wasn’t much different this year. We aren’t big believers in shutting down for COVID. So, we didn’t change anything. Christmas Eve we had our family dinner only one relative didn’t come because his wife is a believer in shutting down if it was up to him he would have come. Christmas Story
Me and my family open our presents in the morning. Then we go over do my dads side for breakfast. Our cousins come over to my grandparents house and we open presents. We stay there for a couple hours. Then in the afternoon we go over to my moms side and all my family goes over there. We eat dinner and we open presents. However because of covid this year we weren't able to go to mammoth to ski. My christmas wasn't different at all. We did the same thing that we normally do. -

Christmas this year was different for everybody. Well, usually for christmas we go and visit family. but this year, we couldnt. For this christmas i was with my mom because my parents are divorced. we decorated the house all nice, and had a christmas eve dinner. it was mashed potatoes, steak, green beans, and cranberries. Usually on christmas morning, we would all get up around 7 am, But this year, we got up at 10 am. the day went by normally, but the vibe was still off in a way i couldnt figure out. that concludes my christmas -

Christmas
This year was pretty much the same as a normal Christmas. We had my grandparents over, opened presents under the tree, and had a big Christmas dinner. The only thing that didn't go as planned was my family from New York was supposed to come over, but they are at high risk with health problems. -

Quarantine Christmas
On Christmas day every year my family's cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandparents come to our house. We would open our gifts and play with them for a while and after a few hour they would all leave. Later that day we go to our other cousins house to eat dinner. Covid-19 didn't have a huge affect on my Christmas but a few things changed. One thing that we couldn't do was have people over, we only had our grandparents over. Other than that, my Christmas was the same as any other year. -

My 2020 Christmas
This Christmas in the year 2020 was not much different as I expected than other years. The only really change was that my grandparents couldn't come. For as long as I remember I have spent every christmas with my grandparents. Also, because of the pandemic, all restaurant seating is closed. My family and I usually go out to dinner every christmas eve. But this year, we had it at home, which was not really odd since we only started going out for dinner christmas eve a few years ago. Other than those changes, we still did everything the same, we decorated, made cookies, got christmas pajamas, and more. However, it did not feel like christmas. Even though everything we did was the same pretty much, it did not feel like christmas. Listening to christmas music did not even make me feel like it was christmas. To sum up, my 2020 christmas was still pretty much the same. -

Christmas and Covid
December 23rd, all of my family is finally here and we are preparing everything. My grandparents are finally here and I am so excited to celebrate with all my family. December 24th, we have just finished wrapping gifts and oh my gosh it took so long. I also had to help my aunt out so I didn't finish until about 6pm. I have just gotten dressed in my black poka-dot dress with a short skirt and a puffy plaid jacket, with white fluff. We had the best dinner a beef stew, with potatoes, carrots, celery, chicken broth, beef, and some other stuff. We finished off the stew and had a desert of chocolate chip cookies. At midnight (can't believe we made it) we opened all the presents. I got a Looney Tunes sweatshirt, fluffy caramel colored shorts, canvases, paint, more clothes, and a French easel. In the morning I went to my grandparents house and enjoyed an early dinner. We then proceeded to open presents, and had a wonderful time. All in all Christmas wasn't as different as I thought it would be. All my family was there, we ate a lovely dinner, and had so many presents. -

What was Christmas like for me and my family during COVID-19
During the month of December, my family I had some very challenging obstacles in the way. One being we couldn't have anyone over for Christmas dinner not only that but have people over in general. Another thing that has to do with not seeing each other is everyone is mailing things and a result of this is packages and gifts not making it on time. Something else to do with packages and mail is manufacturers aren't working because of COVID-19. These are some struggles and problems I had this Christmas. -

COVID Christmas
On December 23, I received an email from my youth group leader, saying that her daughter had just tested positive for COVID-19. I had been displaying no symptoms, but my mom and twelve-year-old brother had been feeling a little sick, so they were tested the next day. A man came to our house with full protective gear and used a mouth swab instead of the more common one in the nose. Since we were trying to be responsible, when we went to Christmas Eve mass, we sat in our car in the church parking lot and listened to the sound using the radio. My youngest brother, at age five, was quickly bored. When we went home we had dinner. It was Mexican food. My mom had set out all of our nice silverware and china. Over dinner we received the results of the tests taken earlier that day, which were positive. My mom began calling people and friends we had been in contact with and later went to bed. My brother tried to wake me up several times in the early morning, but I was actually sleeping well for the first time on Christmas Eve and told him to go away. When I finally did get up we went into our living room and I saw that I had gotten a new bike. It was a really nice one too! Later we picked up gifts from our grandparents. It was a sad sort of Christmas; our Christmas dinner was eaten in the living room in front of the movie Soul. It had just come out on Disney+. -

Covid Thanksgiving
For this Thanksgiving it was different from others because this year I couldn't have any friends over or my grandparents either. Usually on a normal Thanksgiving my friends, my parents' friends and my family would come over for dinner but this year because of covid that didn't happen. Something the same from the other years that happen would be the food, we had the same food we had last year, turkey, mashed potatoes, and more. I really didn't have to prep this year because we had no one over but I still had to help buy the supplies. This year was very different it wasn't as fun but I still got to spend time with my family. -

Now vs. Before COVID
My life before COVID was just going to school, sports (tennis and dance), then going home to eat dinner and going to bed so I can repeat the process the next day. Now during COVID I wake up and go straight to my computer to start school, after I finish school I practice online dance lessons and sometimes play tennis and then I eat dinner and go to bed. I think I knew things were going to change when my sisters school shut down and my friends and I started talking about this new disease that is spreading. -

2020-06-27A Good Time for Fondue
Last weekend, my dad (Grandpa) fell ill. We spent the week anxiously anticipating the results of his Coronavirus test while he quarantined in his bedroom. When the results came back negative, the grandchildren wanted to celebrate. So, my Mom (Grandma) promised them a fondue party. The fondue set in was a wedding gift for my parents, and they had only used it once in their 46 years of marriage (married 04/27/1976). The chocolate fondue was delicious, and the fondue set is yet another relic we've dusted off during this long shelter-in-place. -

So, we ventured out to dinner tonight. In a restaurant. For the first time. In a couple months. We decided that if the servers were not wearing masks, we'd order and take out. The servers were wearing masks, so we went for it. We had a lovely dinner on the patio, although it was hot (about 105.) We spent part of the meal mulling over our feelings about eating out. Definitely in a new world!
