Staying Active
San Diego has always been known for its beautiful beaches, especially during the spring and summer seasons. Normally beaches would be crowded with people laying about and basking in the sun. But this photo shows the opposite. During the lockdowns in Spring 2020, outdoor activity was encouraged for anyone who wanted to stay active. The beach was no exception. However, we could not just go to the beach to relax; we had to stay walking and moving around. There was more enforcement at the beach to make sure everyone was moving and had their masks on. Due to the lack of travel, the beach crowd was smaller than normal. Parts of the beach were even blocked off to discourage people from going too far and breaking rules. Distancing rules were enforced pretty much everywhere. -

My Mother Will Be 80 Years Old This Week
My mother will have her eightieth birthday this Sunday. She is not likely to share her story here. She has a computer and uses the Internet. However, she usually only looks at other people’s posts on Facebook and does not use Twitter at all. I will therefore tell some of her story myself. My mother has been stuck in her house for nearly a year now. She lives only a mile or two from each of us, so my sister and I get her groceries for her so she does not risk exposure to the virus. My mother was resistant to this for a while, from a combination of independence, a disinclination to impose on others, and a plain desire to get out of the house. My mother probably has not gotten a hug from anyone in nearly a year. We call her nearly every day, and we do visit with her on patio, but we always keep our distance. As much as she would like to see people more, she does not want to break social distancing. In her view, she has stuck with it this long and does not want to waste that effort. When I talk to my mother, she often expresses boredom. She reads, works on puzzles, watches television, and calls family (although she does not want to bother people). The other day I half-jokingly suggested that she spend some time writing her memoirs. It would be a gift for her children and grandchildren to record her life experiences. My mother has started writing several pages a day. She writes long-hand in a notepad, then types up what she wrote on her computer. I was amused when she told me this, because I have not written that way in more than thirty years, and younger generations likely could not imagine doing it this way. My mother made one of her rare trips outside the house last week. She was able to navigate the website and get herself an appointment for a COVID vaccination. I was rather proud of her for persistently navigating a website that I found confusing and difficult to use. Her persistence in seeking a vaccination speaks to her eagerness to get life back to normal. -

My Experience
My Thanksgiving wasn’t the same as all the other ones because my typical Thanksgiving is with my grandparents, cousins, uncles, and aunts. Since there is a global pandemic, we had to keep it small. So we had a small Thanksgiving with just my two sisters and my parents. My grandparents did stop by, but only for twenty minutes and we had to stay six feet apart. I didn’t have to get all dressed up, or even change out of the clothes I woke up in. My family didn’t even have a turkey this year! In February, there was no such thing as Corona. You didn’t have to wear a mask or social distance. I went to my friend’s houses and hung out in big groups. I was going to school every day and visiting my grandparents once a week. Around this time there were rumors that Covid was going to come to America and that maybe our schools would close but I never believed it. When I would hear about Corona I never ever thought that some of my loved ones would end up getting it. When people starting saying that our schools might close I was excited to have a shot break off of school, but little did I know it would be a nine month break. In February, I was careless and didn’t have to worry about washing my hands or staying six feet apart. -

A Kiss Across the Glass
The girl in the photo called Ying Cheng, Five other colleagues from her hospital received an emergency notification from the hospital: the negative pressure ward will be activated at any time! After receiving the notice, she didn't have much time to explain to her family one by one, and she immediately returned to the hospital to prepare to enter the front line "battlefield". Since then, Ying Cheng has stayed in the negative pressure ward every day, guarding the diagnosed patients against a distance. In front of the infection building of the Fourth Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine, her boyfriend met across the glass. This is the first time they have met in 11 days. The two talked on the phone and talked to each other, kissing through the glass. The couple agreed at the time: "When the epidemic is over and she comes out of the hospital, the first thing is to get married." -

Steak, Discounts, and Toilet Paper
This particular restaurant on Maize Road in Wichita, Kansas, demonstrates the various strategies businesses employed to remain viable as COVID-19's easy transmission forced many restaurants to close their dine-in rooms and switch to online, carry-out, and delivery services. Along with the 15% discount for online ordering, this restaurant added the rather interesting incentive of a free roll of toilet paper for each order, thereby highlighting the acute hygiene product shortage that emptied store shelves across the United States in the wake of the virus-inspired "panic buying" that gripped the country. Day 65 of self-quarantine
This picture can be considered a meme, which shows how the things that after being in self-quarantine for a month from a my job, I really took for granted how great it was to help someone out, even if it is helping them out with their drinks. All the things I would complain about, I wish I hadn't as this quarantine had made me miss my job. It relates to the pandemic as it has shifted our world tremendously. These reoccurrences were what was considered normal to me. I only want to be able to help someone out again, being at home hs been a struggle #CSUS #HIST15H -

Quarantine buzz cut selfie
A selfie of my fresh quarantine buzz cut. I decided to shave my hair off when it became overgrown as a very potent sign that I will not be going to get a hair cut until it is actually safe to do so, not just safe for me as the consumer but safe for people whose job it is to cut hair. There is a lot of tension in the US at this time between people who feel that we need to open up the economy in order to facilitate a speedy return of the status quo and those who argue that it is not worth losing more lives to save the economy. I wanted it to be visually clear that I do not intend to endanger someone else or be part of their having to choose between financial ruin and physical illness simply for the sake of my own vanity. -

My Brother Playing Beat Saber on the Oculus VR Headset
Since COVID-19 is forcing people to stay indoors and isolate from others, I have had the opportunity to spend more time with my family. Every night, we try to eat dinner together and do something as a group, whether we watch a movie or play a game. The other evening my brother, Joshua, elected that we play a game on his Oculus VR headset. We played a game called Beat Saber. In the game different colored blocks come flying towards you and you have to hit them, following the beat of the song playing in the background. This proved to be a fun way for us to get together and hang out. I will say that if you ever elect to play this game be prepared for sore arms the next day. It is definitely a workout. Even though COVID-19 has disrupted everyone’s plans, don’t let it stop you from hanging out with loved ones (at home). I was really frustrated when I had to leave college and come back home, but I’ve actually enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Even though I miss being in class and seeing my friends, it is nice to finally have some time that I can spend with my family. -

Hopi Tribe Issues Executive Stay-At-Home Order to Citizens
“As matters progress with regard to the COVID-19 pandemic, additional advisories and Orders may follow,” said Hopi Chairman Timothy Nuvangyaoma, “but we are implementing what precautions and restrictions that we feel are currently warranted to ensure the public health and welfare of our people. It is important to remember, as has been said before, ‘a virus does not move, people move it’, so we encourage the Hopi public to take charge of their own health and welfare and be cautious in their daily interactions with others during this time.” #IndigenousStories -

Grocery Worker's Experience
For grocery worker Emma, things have changed a lot within the past few weeks. The stores are taking a lot more precautions. Everyone cleaning things constantly, there is glass to protect the cashiers at the registers, and they are allowed to wear masks. They have also raised the hourly wage during the crisis and committed to having paid sick days. Things have been pre-packaged to help limit the risks to everyone. She is not very worried about catching COVID-19. -

Some people chose to fill their windows with colorful hearts, while others decided to rely on humor during this time of uncertainty. -

Fully stretch out your arm. When you are about six feet * away from someone, their face fits into your hand roughly like this:**
An informational drawing made to help with social distancing, the drawing shows what a person's face would look like if the viewer were standing six feet away, holding their arm out, and looking at the persons face through their thumb and forefinger. From the artist, Mona Chalabi: "I know this is a bit dumb but I was speaking to my friend in France last night and when I said that the advice here is to stand 6 feet apart, she asked 'how much is that in meters?' so I came up with this. I also wanted to make an image that’s informative but not scary (right now, it feels like it’s hard to separate out those two). Finally, I wanted to figure out if people in the line at the supermarket really are standing too close to me. They are." -

The Social Distanced Family
My Husband and dog Ginger are spending time together on our office couch. We have not left our house other than going to the store twice, in the last 13 days. My husband was playing a video game as I continue to do college homework via the internet. Our dog Ginger has been very happy we both have been home. We have been zooming and using Discord to talk to our friends, who we miss dearly. We didn't visit our uncle or my father on their birthdays. We decided to take Governer Dewine's plea for social distancing very seriously. The weather in Ohio is still cold, we look forward to when we can enjoy some sunshine.
