"Well that settles it! I'm never grocery shopping on a Saturday!"
This past Saturday, I went to the craft store at the local strip mall with my mom. I needed yarn to knit some lace onto a project I have going and she, upon hearing this, called a single 93 year old lady we do the shopping for during the pandemic and asked if she would like any yarn since she knits too, and she did. It was 1 pm when we were there and the line to get into the local Loblaws grocery store was the longest I have ever seen it. I counted at least 14 families in line, which would mean it would likely take them as much 30 mins to an hour to get into the store. The other notable fact about the line is that it contained multiple children. Up until recently the policy was that only one individual per household was allowed in the store at a time and parents were not allowed to bring in children. As this policy has react parents and guardians, according to my mom who does our groceries, have started bringing their small children, sometimes in groups of 4 or 5. There are two sides to this of course, because firstly, many do not have the childcare to do others but the children often do not understand or observe social distancing in the stores. As we drove around to leave and saw the line my mom exclaimed "Well that settles it! If ever I was tempted I am not doing groceries on a Saturday! No matter how desperate we are! It is never that busy on weekdays!" -

Heroes Work Here
The Reutlinger is a senior living community, specializing in assisted living, memory care and skilled nursing, nearby my home. About a week into our shelter-in-place orders, this sign appeared near the main entrance to the facility. The sign reads "Heroes Work Here." Senior care facilities have been hit the hardest during the COVID-19 pandemic. When an outbreak of the virus occurs within these facilities, it spreads quickly and typically results in a large number of fatalities. Those working at the Reutlinger during this pandemic are working on the front lines and are heroes as they risk their safety to care for some of the most vulnerable members of our community. -

Racism towards Asians during quarantine
Many Asians, especially elderly Asians, were mistreated during the Covid-19 pandemic. Discrimination towards Asians has severely affected their life on many respected. They were verbally, physically attacked because many people consider them as the source of this pandemic and spread their anger towards many innocent people. -

Hospital Wristband
My elderly mother had to go to the emergency room. As a visitor I was screened at the entrance, asked several questions about my health, exposure to Covid-19, and recent travel. Nothing like this has ever happened to me in a hospital before. I'm glad they are doing this, but it was sobering. My community has not been hard hit by the pandemic, and it's hard to remember sometimes that this invisible virus is always potentially present. This object was a tangible reminder. -

The Ethnocid Effect of COVID-19 on the Indigenous Peoples of Guatemala
“In Guatemala, the first infected with Covid 19 was revealed on March 13. Until recently March 26, the government had only carried out 564 tests for the virus and the situation was: 25 infected, and of them, one deceased and 5 cured. The government says that it has already contained the virus, epidemiologists say no and that perhaps the worst may be yet to come…” -

Painting and Grief
My 82 year old grandmother has been diagnosed with a giant aortic aneurysm that has grown. Originally, surgery was not an option because of her age. Due to the growth the surgery has been scheduled to be performed at Stanford Medical Center. The surgery could be fatal and family has worked arranged her funeral in advance. Covid-19 has made the process of saying goodbye difficult. I decided to shelter-in-place with her for a long weekend. We used the time to go over family photos, listen to stories, enjoy eachother. We spent Saturday painting together. She has been an artist her entire life, this is her love language. Occasionally grabbing the brush from my hand to guide a watercolor shadow or highlight, she makes it look effortless. We said goodbye knowing it may be the last time we see each-other. The hospital will not allow for family to accompany her for her surgery or recovery. Waiting is all that can be done. Her name is Janice Simone Simon. She is 83 years old and the matriarch of our family. She is loved. Covid-19 has changed the way we say goodbye. -

A drawing of old people forced to stay at home because of COVID-19
This image shows two elderly people, a man, and women, sitting on their couch watching a news report of another coronavirus case. A cat is sitting on the couch as well which shows how the only company they had other than themselves was their pets and the TV. Many immunocompetent members of our society have to stay home during this pandemic because they do not want to risk contracting the disease. Many elderly specifically are afraid to even go to the grocery store in fear of the virus, so instead, they spend their days at home. Many people are watching the news and keeping u with politics even more now, looking out for the next changes that are to take place with this novel virus. #CSUS #HIST15H *Instagram Post -

Initial Findings on Covid-19 in New York: Staying home may be putting people at risk.
The source includes testimony of New York Governor Andrew Cuomo regarding the present statistics of Covid-19 in New York. The evidence is shocking because as the government tries to determine how the virus is spreading, they uncover most of the hospitalized population to be those who were quarantined at home and non-essential. The homeless. the jailed, the essential workers, and even the users of public transportation were of the lowest percentage of hospitalized people. The early data begs the question: Is staying at home the best way to fight the pandemic? #CSUS #HIST15H -

Mother's day COVID-19 style
My grandma lives alone and has not gone out since a shelter in place order has been implemented. So for mother's day, some of us gathered in her garage and backyard to spend some time with her. Sadly, we could not hug her or eat lunch indoors with her, but at least we got some time with her face-to-face. -

He offered to lift her but she insisted on getting on from the front door. He eventually pulled off without her. -

Precautions during Quarantine
During Covid-19 people became more conscious of going outside and interacting with the public. The risk of contracting the virus was high and was extremely dangerous for those members of the public who had health issues. My grandmother is one of those people. She is immunosuppressed and has respiratory issues. Given her health making her at a higher risk, my family started our own disinfecting station to clean or wipe down any items that came from the grocery store or were delivered. This greatly mitigated the risk of my grandmother contracting the virus. As we watched the number of cases rise in our state every day, we took solace in knowing that we were doing everything we could to protect ourselves, others, and my grandmother. #REL101 -

Staying safe during quarantine
When Covid-19 broke out, everyone began to be more conscious when it came to going out and interacting with the public. The risk of contracting the virus was high and extremely dangerous to some people with health issues. That was the case with my grandmother who is immunosuppressed and has respiratory issues. In order to protect ourselves, and especially her, my family limited going out to just grocery store runs and any traveling for work. We set up our own disinfecting station where we wiped down anything that came from the grocery store or mail, as well as thoroughly washing our hands during the process. We watched the news carefully every day and saw the number of infected cases rise each day, but took solace in knowing that my grandmother was safe and healthy. -

Photograph of a flyer.
This is a photograph of a flyer posted on the side of a Hispanic grocery store at the end of my street in Northside Chicago on my way back from a quick grocery trip. This GoFundMe was created March 20th by members of the Uptown Buena Park Solidarity Network. The Uptown and Buena Park areas are home to older people, people out of homes, migrants of many countries and cultures, and more recently, young working professionals. The UBP Solidarity Network Twitter bio says they are, “an all-volunteer, grassroots group operating in Chicago's Uptown and Buena Park neighborhoods.” They set up Google forms for people in need to request groceries, bill payments or help being sheltered. Although they only exist on social media, they use physical signs because they do not want to leave out the members of the community who are most vulnerable at this time. Their social media provide links to forms where people can request help from older citizen care, grocery runs and helping with bill payments. #DePaulHST391 -
