The Big Flee
Early in the morning on March 17, my roommates and I fled San Francisco. It felt extremely weird leaving my life behind, but we would return to normal soon (or so I thought). As we piled our belongings into the back of a friend's car I looked around to see nobody. Not even an early morning jogger or any sign of life for that matter. In the airport we got through security in five minutes and saw around two others our whole time there. It was as if time had stood still in the city. At the time I was extremely scared, as what evils could cause a city-wide shutdown? How dangerous was CO-19 if all colleges had moved to online learning and forced every student out of the dorms? Little was known about the effects of CO-19 in March, and as I write this on August 23, 2020 more is yet to be discovered before we can safely reopen as a country. I chose to include this photo with my story as it was taken on March 16, 2020, the night before San Francisco's mandatory shutdown. It was eerie how silent the once bustling streets of downtown were. I had never witnessed something like this in my life. -

An Empty Bridge
This is a picture of the Oakland Bridge in the Bay Area, California, while completely empty due to the initial Covid-19 lockdown. This bridge normally has thousands and thousands of people crossing it on any given day, and at any given moment it will typically be packed with commuters. In the photo, it's almost completely empty. This uncanny image was the first thing that made me, living in a city on the opposite side of the country, realize just how serious the virus would be. At this point in time, most of my friends and family still believed we would be going back to school within the month of March. It was unimaginable that we would still be dealing with the pandemic in August, when I am writing this, and that we probably will be dealing with this for the foreseeable future. The response to this pandemic was quite obviously botched by the US and its institutions that are supposed to protect us, and by the end of this hundreds of thousands of people will be dead as a result. I fear a lot of people in the future will blame this tragedy on everyday people's failure to lockdown, and I think this image serves as an essential reminder that when we were first told to lock down, the American people locked down. -

Pandemic in Paradise
During this pandemic the state of Hawai'i has suffered a hit to our economy of tourism and many families and business have suffered many losses. Loss of income, jobs with benefits, housing and livelihood have taken a catastrophic drop through out the island chain. The new normal of wearing masks have not just become a requirement amongst the population but many have taken to making masks as both a way to make money and pass the time while on lock down. We have never seen our beaches not filled to capacity with people during the day time no matter what time of the year it is and for the first time we see nature both calm, serene and untouched for the first time in decades. Communities have come together to ensure the rules and policies are followed in certain areas of the islands to keep their families safe from many visiting tourists who have not quarantined during their stay here in Hawai'i. The government has issued a 14 day quarantine to any visitors from outside of the Hawaiian islands to keep the disease under control and from spreading into many of the local communities. The state of Hawai'i's numbers aren't as severe as the mainland United States but continue to grow in numbers. Numbers that continue to keep our famous beaches closed to not just the visitors but for the locals as well, the economy is at the lowest it has ever been and even worst than after 9-11. My job at Starbucks provides a great way to distract people from the chaos going on in their lives and around the world, I've learned that this one on one contact with someone may be the only contact some people ever get in their day to day lives. People look forward to any human interaction these days especially when our lives start off with work and end with home, no in-betweens. What I miss the most is hugging those around you who are closest with you, it's a social norm to hug someone here and is as formal as a handshake when you first meet them. I even find myself being unable to recognize someone with their mask on even if I have known them for years, that saying "I never forget a face" has definitely been put to the test. But what can I say? Until this pandemic is under control and we find a cure this will continue to be the new normal of today. -

RIT during a COVID-19’s Monday
At the beginning of close down in RIT, I was taking a walk around the campus to see if there is any place open. It feels extremely weird to see such an empty walkway during Monday with only a few international students, where normally there will be hundreds of students walking through to get to their classes or other building at this time. Plus, it was rainy that day, which made the whole scene feel more sad. -

Empty Chairs on an Empty Campus Where My Friends Used to be
A photo taken behind the Liberal Arts hall at RIT on a walk home from the only open post office on campus. The chairs were positioned in a circle by an unknown person. All but one of the chairs is cast in the shadow of the building. There was no one in the area, or on the campus for that matter, not that I saw. I do not know how long the chairs were positioned like that. I took this photo because I thought it was a powerful image that needed to be captured. The circle of chairs indicating a social gathering on a sunny afternoon juxtaposed with the completely empty campus. -

The City That Never Sleeps Until it Did
One night in April, around 8 P.M, a few friends and I decided to go on a bike ride. We rented Citi Bikes and biked all the way from the East Village up to 5th Avenue, one of the most popular and famous streets in Manhattan. On a typical day, 5th Avenue would be overrun with people shopping, going to restaurants, leaving their office, or exploring the tourist sites in the area. The streets themselves would jammed with traffic as commuters and tourists alike try to get to other parts of the city via car, taxi, or bus. However, once New York City shutdown in March, the bustling city that we knew disappeared. Streets were empty all day, empty enough that I felt comfortable biking on one of the busiest roads of the city. I had never seen a New York like this, and am unlikely to see it like this again in my lifetime. What was once the epicenter of art, food, technology, culture, and tourism was now a desolate ghost town. -

Empty Parking Lots that Were Once Filled
These parking lots were empty for months during the COVID pandemic. Businesses were ordered to close unless it was deemed a "essential business." Those businesses included grocery stores, home improvement centers, real estate agents, pharmacies, ranching, farming, food production, health care, motels/hotels. As a result, retail, restaurants, small businesses, salons, gyms, and so many others suffered incredible financial losses. Many will not recover. -

A child plays at San Francisco's Palace of Fine Arts
A small child plays on an empty lawn in front of San Francisco's Palace of Fine Arts. A favorite place to relax for local residents, as well as a event and tourist hot spot, the Palace of Fine Arts is typically a spectacle. On any given day, groups gather for picnics, bridal parties pose for photographs, and tourists zoom by on Segways. The emptiness of the Palace of Fine Arts during the early days of California's shelter-in-place orders is definitely a moment in time. -

As the San Francisco Bay Area's shelter-in-place orders began to relax, a friend ventured into the city for a drive. She took this video of the light traffic on the Golden Gate Bridge. Empty Path To Golden Gate Bridge
A friend that lives in San Francisco sent me this photograph she took on a recent run. The image is of a path that runs alongside Crissy Field. It is one of the most popular walking/running paths for locals and tourists alike as it includes an incredibly picturesque view of the Golden Gate Bridge. This path is typically full of people. During shelter-in-place orders, however, hardly anyone was on the trail. There are 2-3 figures on the pier in the distance. And the rooftop of just 2 cars is visible on the Golden Gate Bridge. -

Hopper Life Filter
I have included this photo as it reminded me so strongly, on the night I took that photo, of Edward Hopper’s Nighthawks (1942). For some reason I have always found the colour palette and story of that particular painting to be really soothing and calming, and it has always been one of my favourite painting for that reason even though by genre and artist it falls well outside my usual area of interest. I remember reading something years ago which described the scenes depicted in Hopper’s artworks in this period as depicting liminal social spaces, characterised by public spaces designed for crowds (cafes, hotels lobbies, restaurants etc.) which are nearly empty and in between phases of activity, and this whole year has felt like one giant Hopper painting that I can’t escape from. I looked at a bunch of his paintings again whilst deciding what to say about this moment, and the painting Automat (1927) is one I have always identified with in a really positive way being both rather introverted and a ritual tea drinker. When I was looking at his paintings again and saw it however, I felt such a strange rush of both sadness and anxiety and I can’t help but feel like my enjoyment of Hopper’s paintings in this period has been ruined forever, though hopefully my feelings about the paintings will swing in the opposite direction again as I age and change myself, as great art is wont to do. -

PANDEMIC, The empty spring leading to the river
These photos were taken by my friend in New York. She usually used to work out in the gym. However, all the gyms had been closed because of the Covid-19. She had to carefully find a route for walking to avoid people. She hardly did so since she didn't like the crowded street but now it is hard to see people on the street. These photos record an empty spring in New York. We can see a cat looking outside the window which is rarely seen in usual because cats are afraid of the crowd. -

Empty city
In these months of the virus's rapid expansion, China has taken measures to seal off its cities. In Wuhan, no one is free to enter or leave the city. Residents in Wuhan are also unable to leave their homes. All supplies, as well as food, are delivered by a single person. People were asked to self-segregate as well as social distance. The whole city was like an empty city, no vehicles, no lights, no people. The formerly bustling city becomes a 'dead city' with no breath. At that time, what awaited people was the rising number of confirmed diagnoses and deaths and the sporadic hope they saw as soon as they opened their eyes each day. -

Empty Lots
Under quarantine I took up biking to keep me active and mentally sane. This allowed me to cruise around the city I live in and sort of go sight seeing in downtown areas and even the area surrounding Disneyland. Occasionally I’d stop by The Outlets at Orange or aka the block and bike around the completely empty parking lots. I wasn’t the only person there as sometimes I’d see people skating, walking, running, or even roller skating. I think the most interesting things I saw people do to try to stay sane under quarantine was the visits to Krispy Kreme, the line for the drive thru were insanely long and wrapped around the curb like a snake. It felt strange seeing the block so lonely but it has recently reopened and is full of cars yet again. -

Desolation
A school graduation is supposed to be unforgettable - people from all over coming together to celebrate a moment that most students cherish for the rest of their lives. Now with the pandemic, we are forced to graduate within the comforts of our home, yet we feel more disconnected than ever. This picture represents the great memories we made in high school, the great experiences we lost, and the great friends and family that surround and propel us in life. To the class of 2020, these are not easy times, but we will get through them. With your leadership and spirit, the world will be stronger than ever. -

An image shared on the Santa Cruz, CA subreddit showing the beach in front of the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk on day 60 the Shelter in Place along with some responses to the photo. This beach is usually very busy, especially on weekends during summer, and usually full of tourists visiting the amusement park. Because this beach is so busy there is usually a lot of trash here in the sand. I used to live near this beach when I live in Santa Cruz, and it is very weird seeing it empty like this at a time when it should be busy. -

Drone footage over Boston
t feels like the streets of Boston haven’t been this empty since the cows (apocryphally) laid out the paths centuries ago. Aram Boghosian, a regular freelance photographer and videographer for the Boston Globe, shot aerial video with a drone over several Boston hotspots on Monday and Tuesday. On a normal weekday afternoon, the city bustles with workers and tourists and commuters alike. But in the footage, the city sits nearly empty. It’s a ghost of what it was just a week ago, before Gov. Charlie Baker banned gatherings of over 25 people, established tight restrictions on stores and restaurants, and closed the schools in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. Newbury Street and Faneuil Hall Marketplace are nearly devoid of shoppers. The seagulls on Summer Street seem to outnumber the pedestrians. Traffic is breezy in and out of the city, and an empty Fenway Park won’t see a pitch anytime soon. Only a handful of people walk and bike across Boston Common, which hosted a rally of over 13,000 densely packed people less than three weeks ago. It seems unimaginable now *Drone footage of Boston during quarantine -

Long-Term Changes?
Today I decided I would do my run outside with my dad. We stayed pretty close and only went a mile out from the house, two miles total. On the run we passed my old elementary school and there was caution tape all around it. This made me feel like I shouldn’t be outside. I was only outside for twenty minutes though and I stayed six feet away from everyone I saw on the way including workers and even my dad. Also, I listened to a podcast which discussed something I really got to thinking about. It stated how the last time we were in a national state of emergency was 9/11. Before 9/11 you could just show up to the airport and get on your flight and go, but after the tragedy the government put up a lot of security in airports and now, we have to wait in long lines for police officers to look in our bags and sometimes pat us down. The last national emergency changed the world. We may think that the social distancing, quarantines, mask wearing, hand sanitizer, and elbow shakes instead of hand shakes are just temporary, but the reality is some of these things might stick and become a part of our world. It is a crazy thought that you might always have to carry a mask with you to the water park, school, etc. However, it could happen. Ultimately, this pandemic will change the world. *Original text of "Creator:" Nicole Dumitrascu #LSMS #NSD -

Life during Covid-19
April 20th, 2020 Covid-19 is spreading like wildfire. Cases are going up like no other and many hospitals are running out of room for patients. Whenever I look outside, I barely see any cars compared to how it used to be. Roads aren’t as busy and many people are staying indoors. I was riding bikes the other day and we passed by a park with caution tape surrounding the whole thing. Due to gyms being closed people are starting to go on runs and trying to keep themselves fit during this tough time. People are definitely not trying to come in contact with other people and if two people are about to cross each other on the same path one goes to the road. A lot of people have been going to hardware stores to get stuff to build so they would have something to do during the day. Many people are starting to make there own gardens so that they could see the flowers growing everyday to give them something to look forward to. Online schooling hasn’t been the best, but you have to do it. I really miss all my friends and I know that I won’t see them till next school year or maybe later. When I first heard about Covid-19 I didn’t think much of it and then it hit Idaho and know 3/4ths of the news is talking about the Coronavirus. I like to watch the videos that have been posted on social media about Covid-19 because they make me feel like we are all going to get through this but we should laugh about it instead of being scared because then you can have hope, and personally I think that is one thing we definitely need. -
